Pros: Professional features and images, robust, pro build quality. Cons: Initial cost to purchase.
The Nikon D200 digital SLR is Nikon's first 10.2 MP camera and while it offers a little less resolution than Nikon's current flagship, the D2Xs, it provides users with professional level features and images at a less than full scale professional price. ...
Pros: Best digital SLR ergonomics available, rugged, superb image quality, great value. Cons: 1.5X crop factor, limited dynamic range, no sensor debris filter, Nikon Capture not included.
This review is being updated frequently as I have more time to discover the D200's strengths and weaknesses. Thanks to Paul (colonialpara) for reminding me of some key issues. Introduction I shoot primarily with Nikon 35mm film SLR ...
Pros: Matrix metering, smart ergonomics, superior image quality to the D70 Cons: Poor value, non-pro warranty autofocus not pro level, camera confused in demanding situations.
Like most people here I wrote a a glowing review when I had first purchased the D200. This can be a poor time to write because people can be hypnotized by an expensive new toy. Over a period of six months I have changed my opinion about this ...
Pros: Excellent image quality, build and performance. Bright viewfinder. Cons: Not cheap, high ISO noise.
Introduction Like many others I rushed to place an order as soon as the D200 was announced. Several months later, and I became the lucky owner of a camera from the second batch to reach the UK. I paid £1200, a £100 reduction on the RRP of £1300. ...
Pros: Great handling, build and picture quality Cons: About 500 dollars more than it's really worth.
Very few people are going to give an accurate review of the new Nikon D200, but I'm going to try. I'm NOT going to review the D200 on its own. That's not realistic or representative of how shoppers will seek out this camera. At such a high price, ...
Pros: D2x D.N.A. Strong body build, features. Great for the rough and tumble photo beings. Cons: Expensive, heavy for some,D80 weakens the D200s case.
Everyone has very well documented the features and performance of the D200 beautifully, so hopefully I will not repeat too many observations here. I own the Nikon D70s as well, and have a basic compliment of lenses. The 70mm to 300mm and the 18mm to ...
Pros: Solid but not too heavy, excellent ergonomics, smart design Cons: The flash sync and remote socket protection caps fall off too easily.
The D200 fits into the Nikon range between the professional D2 and the consumer models (D50, D70 etc.). It provides good value for money and a solid, reliable basis for digital photography. The ergonomics are excellent and attention to detail is very ...
Pros: Easy to use; large viewing screen; one of the best viewfinders. Cons: Initial bobble with the shutter problem.
I definitely think Nikon has a winner here. Originally I was going to get a D70s but when I heard about the D200, I waited. I'm glad I did....well, based on four days of use. I placed my D200 on order in mid February. I was immediately told that it ...
Pros: Great build quality, fantastic resolution and colour balance Cons: High resolution requires careful shooting technique and exposes sloppy shooting. Battery life a little short.
This is my first Digital SLR. I've been a Nikon user for the last 15 years, starting off with a Nikon FM and slowly upgrading through to a F90x and now the D200. Given my investment in Nikon glass and my complete satisfaction with Nikon's quality, I ...
I considered myself a semi-professional photographer at one time, but when I decided that I really "needed" a camera after fifteen plus years out of the field, I found that I did not know anything about digital slrs. I ran out and bought what seemed to ...
Pros: Good Feel, fast reaction and huge buffer. Menus logical Quiet and responsive camera. Cons: Soft Focus make it difficult to get a nice image
I purchased the D200 with the 18-200 combo in October of 2006. I started shooting with the enthusiasm that comes with new equipment however I was feeling disappointed with the results. It seemed that even in daylight conditions I was getting soft ...
Pros: Magnesium body Pro features Size Cons: No sensor for ML-L3
I've been jonsin' for the D200 for about a year, and finally got one. At $600, the price was right. This won't be a technical review; it's a user review, because I'm no technician. You want specs, go to dpreview.com. This is my fourth ...
Pros: Meters with 1970s lenses Cons: Digital noise is ugly past ISO400
I do both wedding and wildlife photography and often shoot 1,000 pictures in a session. I need a camera that can stand up to the elements and shoot in any situation. The D200 never misses a beat. What I like: It's sturdy enough to hold up to blinding ...
Pros: Good images, tough construction, well design & supported Cons: Confused? Hire me to teach you how to use it!
This is a very well designed, very well made rugged camera. For the first time, as a photographer I have purchased a camera that if I lost it, or otherwise needed to replace it, I would purchase another. Why? 1. It is the cheapest camera that is ...
Pros: excellent value for money - solid build Cons: dust on the sensor - but that's a con for all digital SLR's
I bought a D200 about 6 months ago and it was my first leap into the digital SLR. After initial disappointment with image quality (I had previously been using medium format equipment) I took the time to learn about RAW conversion and digital imaging and now i would not me without this camera!
Best of all i have bought an underwater housing for the camera and now i have found a way for my expensive scuba diving habit to become tax deductible!
Represents excellent value for money.

Best Digital SLR for the money by nasarem ,May 11 '06
Pros: Excellent handling, ergonomics, build, image quality, and value. Cons: 1:1 CCD. focus mode easy to accidentally kick into manual.
Hands down the best digital SLR for the money. Even taking the bang-for-the-buck factor our of the equation, many pro photographers will opt for the D200 over other models because of its excellent blend of: unbeatable ergonomics, solid build, consistently excellent image quality, 5 fps speed, and light weight. Excellent color management and white balance management. Hefty array of frankly really neat advanced functions. Wireless Creative Lighting System (CLS) is phenomenal and will change the way you handle light. Built like a tank, excellent handling, good weather resistance, light weight. With its excellent image handling, you will want to pair the D200 with a lens of comparable quality. Consider too one of Nikon's wireless flashes, the SB800, SB600 or R1C1 (for macro).
Pros: overall features and build quality Cons: a little heavy, but not a problem
Overall, the camera is a great buy at a great price. The features of the D200 are quite amazing and superb build. Great upgrade from other Nikon cameras with professional feel. Body has a nice strong feeling and has great fitment for my hands. I personally like the holding position because my hands do not feel cramped. Although there are quite a few functions on the camera that can be somewhat confusing, just play around with the settings or read the manual and everything should be fine. I have to get used to the camera myself, but the whole camera itself is overwhelming. This camera is a great purchase. I do wish that the D200 would be able to move from picture to picture with the turn dial on the back. However, it's not a problem using the directional pad.
Pros: Simply the best camera for the money. Cons: Not a single "con," and I've scrutinized. Nikon got it right!
After several months on the internet doing comparisons between all brands in this Digital SLR genre, I chose the D200. It will serve me well for years to come. I added the Nikon 18-200 zoom lens with VR, a great combination. With this combination of prosumer camera and lens, I can do virtually anything in digital photography. I'm looking forward to taking some of the free classes given by my retailer (Berger Brothers) and wanted to use all of the features the D200 can provide.
Always handle the camera or cameras you're considering on buying. It has to fit your hand in order for you to get comfortable with it. When I picked-up the D200 for the first time, I knew I had found my match. Not too big, and not too small; it has what pros call a great "build" and just seems to fall into my hands naturally.
I bought the outfit at Berger Brothers Camera/Video in Amityville, Ny and could not have had a better buying experience. Great camera...great retailer.
AutoFocus is only shortcoming by jerrybesq ,Oct 18 '08
Pros: Sharpest pictures ever Cons: Autofocus
This is a great camera that will deliver super sharp images . . . unless you use autofocus. I've given the autofocus every chance. It simply does not work. I've assumed it was a software shortcoming but I don't know that. The answer is, of course, to focus manually and you will get images that are as sharp as a razor. They'll look almost 3D on the computer screen. My previous camera was a D70 and I never got images as good as I get with the D200.
