Pros: Great short stories that really slam home hard hitting ideas about living life... Cons: Not all stories succeed, but they all work together as a whole.
American author JD Salinger perhaps crafted the nine best short stories ever written when he wrote Nine Stories. Salinger packs these stories full of interesting stuff and he continues his theme that he wonderfully developed in The Catcher in ...
Pros: Arguably America's greatest 20th Century writer at the peak of his power. Cons: He stopped writing too soon.
As a teenager trying to express the beauty of this book to friends and failing to find adjectives to do it justice, I first learned the word: "poignant". It's a funny word that (according to which dictionary you use) can seem to mean a number of things: ...
I wouldn't call myself a J.D. Salinger fan. Like most people, I've read Catcher in the Rye. I re-read it a year later. I still loved it. So, having heard nothing about any of Salinger's other work, I set out to find some more material. At a...
Pros: a delight to the mind Cons: a few strong words
"Watching her, I lit a cigarette and said I didn't think a sense of humor was of any use in a real pinch" (98). J.D. Salinger's Nine Stories is appropriately titled, as it is comprised of nine different stories, none of which correlate with...
Pros: Convincing dialogue followed by abrupt, numbing endings Cons: Dated references can be distracting
This is the second book I've read by Salinger, the first - of course - being "Catcher in the Rye". Although "Catcher" is an undisputed classic, "Nine Stories" demonstrated to me that Salinger's talents were more well suited for short stories than full ...
Pros: perfect dialogue and an honest sense of the real Cons: The sad feeling gotten from realizing that there exist other stories just as good as the ones in this collection, that will probably never be read
It is an unfortunate fact that countless people have heard of and read "The Catcher in the Rye," but surprisingly few have read "Nine Stories." Undoubtedly, "The Catcher in the Rye" is one of the most stylistically...
Pros: Short, well-written, stories that are easily picked up and put down. Cons: none
This book is great for high-schoolers and beyond. Salinger's collection of short stories is thought-provoking and an amazing literary accomplishment. By putting himself in the place of many different characters, from a 14 year-old girl whose life...
Pros: Mostly mind changing stories. Cons: A couple drab stories
Nine Stories is a book full of, you guessed it, nine stories. While there is some that really draw attention to themselves, such as A Perfect Day for Bananafish and Teddy, others just don’t make the cut. Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut really didn’t capture ...
Pros: There is more of the genius behind Holden! Cons: The Glass family is large, and can confuse even an avid reader.
If Salinger were reading this, he'd be cringing and scowling right now. Against publicity, and believing that books should sell themselves without any attention paid to the author, eerily but accordingly, his short stories take on a life of their own....
Pros: Not Many Cons: Stories are dry, boring and nonsensical.
Nine Stories is yet another disappointing waste of time from the worst author ever, J.D. Salinger. Each story is longer, more boring, pointless, needlessly depressing and asinine than the last. The characters are, descriptively, extremely weak, and the...
nine stories that dont sell short. by plagueonwords ,Jan 22 '05
Pros: nine stories for the price of one, who wouldn't be compelled to read this! Cons: some of the stories are lengthy, pointless reads to be honest. salinger fans only.
this is the third "novel" i've read by salinger, franny & zooey along with catcher & the rye being my first two.
i must say that the first story in the book, "a perfect day for a banana fish" hooked me right in. it's a darling little short story about, none other than a member of the glass family. though most of the stories in the book are real winner, i have some that arent my personable favorites. this book is suggested only if you like salinger, otherwise, you can over skip it.
A collection of brilliant, sad, and influential stories that includes favorites like "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," "Teddy," and "For Esm??, with Lov...More at HotBookSale
