Mattress Topper from Hard to Luxurious Comfort

by teanna3 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Feb 15 '04
Pros: The wait is over "Having the Best Sleep in Your Life"
Cons: No second thoughts when making a purchase
Well relieve it or not you can throw away the tossing and turning and hard bed with NovaForm. I have seen many products at a very large cost for the same as this NovaForm Topper. My dad had purchase the Temperpedic bed and paid over 2,000.00 dollars and ...

Novaform feels great but durability?

by macraz , Feb 13 '04
Pros: Great comfort, immediate difference in sleep.
Cons: Durability, poor long term elasticity might be problem
We bought the top of the line Novaform with the quilted down cover. Sleeping on the topper felt great. Remember, it's only a mattress topper, so it'll feel only as good as your mattress. It was soft, supportive and we noticed an immediate difference. ...

Novafoam Mattress and Topper review

by riposa , Sep 04 '05
Pros: Still worth the extra Topper for a good night sleep! Cheaper then Featherbed!
Cons: Low density is softer but might not last as long.
Regarding the Costco Nova Foam mattresses from Sleep Innovations... Worth reading before you buy! I bought both a mattress and a topper. I had tried a topper before and I thought it was great! However with only a topper I bottomed out just a bit on ...

Novaform Elite Memory Foam Mattress Topper

by jeffconnell , Jul 27 '06
Pros: Mattress "moulds" to body, not too warm or too cool. Sleep better and longer.
Cons: Purchase larger sheets for mattress in order to get full benefit of "memory foam" effect.
I purchased the Novaform Elite Memory Foam Mattress Topper from Costco approx 5 months ago. Unbelievably comfortable mattress. However, in order to get the most out of this mattress, you should make sure you do two important things: 1. Since your ...

Expansion issues like other users have mentioned

by forlamesignups , Sep 13 '06
Pros: outstanding comfort if it works, mine isn't heat inducing
Cons: apparently it is unlikely to work correctly and should most likely be avoided.
Novaform Elite 2 inch thick Full-sized Memory Foam Mattress Topper. Here, just writing another problematic review. Bought the full-sized "Elite" from Costco after having slept on an earlier thinner model at a friend's house which was "memorably" ...

Novaform King Mattress and Mattress Topper

by zibbit , Jan 14 '06
Pros: Responsive surface, excellent support, managable price point, excellent quality, great warranty and free shipping.
Cons: Unless you prefer a firm bed, spend the $120 for the separate topper from Novaform.
The previous review was very comprehensive, and I have to agree with all of the points mentioned. Same month, we purchased the NovaForm King from Costco. We love this bed! Both are arthritis sufferers, I have spinal stenosis and radiculopathy, suffice ...

Novaform mattress Topper Full size

by dasylu21 , Feb 28 '08
Pros: Soft but firm support, like sleeping on a cloud. Inexpensive. Stays in place.
Cons: Heat retention with new microfiber quilted top
We bought our Novaform mattress topper at Costco yesterday. It came with a nice quality quilted cover filled with microfiber. I unpacked the Novafom pad and it was very flat with deep folds. I let it decompress, turning it every hour upside down. Twice I ...

Love this topper. Very comfy and no expansion issues

by catterin , Apr 29 '08
Pros: -Very Comfortable -Soft -4lbs density -Velour cover -Helps my back
Cons: Cold room will not help expansion. Heat needed!
I bought this mattress in February 2008 after looking at some reviews about it online first. My boyfriend had bought a double one a few weeks earlier and the corners never expanded all the way so I was iffy about buying one for myself. I decided that if ...

ends won't uncompress - seems to be damaged
by some_guy_234 ,Feb 09 '06
Pros: inexpensive if it worked
Cons: seems to have been damaged in packaging
I bought a queen size topper at our local costco 5 days ago. As I was putting it in the cart someone shopping nearby told me "I returned three of those before I gave up, the ends wouldn't inflate". I told him I would take a chance anyway, since I've slept on memory foam before and really wanted it to work out. My mistake. The instructions say wait up to 72 hours - I've been waiting 5 days and both ends of the mattress are still smashed flat with no indication that they're going to recover. What a cock up - I can only imagine they are getting back every one that they sell. I sent an email to the manufacturer but not a peep back. This weekend back it will go to costco, never slept on.

NovaformŽ Elite Memory Foam Mattress Topper Slides down
by rbjjbah ,Dec 07 '06
Pros: Soft for her, cool/supportive for me. It makes our old mattress into deluxe comfort.
Cons: It slips down and is hard to move back in position.
We LOVE our NovaformŽ Elite Mattress Topper but it slides down on the bed. we purchased it over a year ago. it ended the long fight over purchasing a softer mattress or maintaing our extra firm matress. Now we have both.

Foam Topper Scam
by rkmis ,Feb 12 '05
Pros: Still trying to come up with some
Cons: Hard to change position, lots of work to get undone.
It took our King size foam topper to weeks to completely expand, after lots of pulling. It was not square and does not fit the full size of a King mattress. The foam leaves a dip where you sleep and if you move, you feel like you are sleeping on a hill. Kind of smelly too. Not worth the money, even at Costco.

Inexpensive, but durability is a concern
by flatcarver ,Apr 04 '04
Pros: inexpensive , comfortable,
Cons: durability ?, poor quality cover
We bought one of these at Costo in Canada, after using the topper for only 2 months, it is already showing signs of wear.My wife and i are lightweight, yet the topper has permanent body impressions in it . The cover that came with it also has problems. We have washed it once, and the zipper is falling apart. We decided to send it back, and got a refund. We have since bought a SENSUS brand by Foamex. This product is clearly superior,it has a 5 lbs density which is similar to tempur pedic. The cover we bought for it eliminates problems we had with the foam giving heat. We both found it hot to sleep on, but these new covers eliminate this problem. We would recommend the Sensus brand 100 % , we have been using it now for 8 months and it looks brand new.
Word to the wise, in life you get what you pay for.

NovaFoam mattress topper
by divitde ,Aug 05 '05
Pros: Much less expensive than replacing entire mattress
Cons: Constantly moves. Cannot keep topper in place. Constantly having to reposition the topper. Very frustrating.
Very comfortable. Feel immediate relief on pressure points. You can feel the foam cradle your body. Does not feel warm like other foam products.

Very comfortable
by hagfors ,Dec 07 '07
Pros: Great support, very comfortable, perfect firmness
Cons: A little shorter than a king size mattress
The memory foam mattress topper is great for people with lower back pains. I suffer from a herniated disc in my lower back and had trouble sleeping on a regular mattress because of the pain it caused. The memory foam pretty much solved that problem. I occasionally feel some pain, but it is MUCH better. You get great support in all positions, especially when sleeping on your back, which I do, which killed me in the past. Bought a king size for about $80 at WalMart. Does not fit king size mattress 100% ( it's about 5-6 inches too short). I am 6'2" but the few inches the topper is too short does not bother me at all as my heels reach exactly down to the end of the topper when laying on the back.

Novaform Topper / Best value for the price!
by gojojo22 ,Mar 09 '05
Pros: 4 lb. density * fits mattress perfectly * soft, zippered cover is included * excellent product!
Cons: *length/time it takes topper to expand to full thickness (comes compressed) * slight odor (disappears)
*I had become frustrated & confused after spending many weeks searching for a new mattress set ... I hated the 'salespitch' I rec'd from stores like 'Mattress Firm' and disliked, even more, the conspiratorial attitude of the department store sales people. There really is no way to compare mattresses...even by name brand since the mattress companies themselves are guilty of keeping us confused by changing the style names & cover colors/patterns for each retailer! Since I purchased my Queen-size Novaform topper @ the end of Jan.'05, I have never slept better!!! It's 2 1/2 in. thick & fits perfectly on my mattress...BEST OF ALL, it didn't cost a lot of $$! I can replace it many times over before I even come close to spending what it would cost to replace my mattress & boxspring.

It doesn't stay put
by hstutch ,Jun 07 '05
Pros: Comfortable
Cons: Inconvenient in the mornings
I bought the memory foam topper for my bed at home, and the mattress for our RV. Both are really comfortable to sleep on, but the topper doesn't stay put on the old standard mattress. In the morning, it has moved up to the head of the bed and there is a big gap at the foot - I am constantly having to pull up the fitted sheet, pull the topper back into place, and struggle with the fitted sheet again. I've tried it on both sides of the cover, with a traditional mattress pad between the original mattress and the topper, I've even tried those rubbery pads you put under throw rugs to keep them in place on a floor - nothing works. And it's not like we're doing aerobics on the bed every night - we're quite still sleepers. I wake up rested, and then get irritated wrestling the stupid thing back into place. If you hate remaking your bed from scratch every morning - I wouldn't recommend this.

I'm surprised at all the bad reviews!!
by suzysurfs ,Jan 21 '07
Pros: the best affordable quick fix to a crappy mattress.
Cons: absolute none!!
i purchased the 2 inch topper about 3 years ago at costco after moving to a new city. With the cost of the move I was really low on cash and inherited a rock hard (seriously!) cheap mattress my mom bought. I have a bad back and need a firm mattress but this mattress was unbearable. I was better off on the floor. So i ran out and bought the topper, came home and ripped it open. The directions told me to let it air out (i think overnight) but i was too impatient. It expanded quite fine and I slept on it that night. Okay, so the smell wasn't that great since I didn't air it out but it subsided after a few days. I've been happy with it since and it's been 3 years. I still happily sleep on the crappy mattress thanks to the nova foam topper.

Oh, I also have a thin quilted cover over the topper and mattress and then I have the sheets over that. my friends are suprised when i tell they're not sleeping on an $800 mattress when they come to visit. they love it as much as i do.

NOVAFORM IS NOT THE NORM!!!
by phyllis2006 ,Jan 27 '06
Pros: Center expands real fast! Comfortable to lay on.
Cons: The darn ends won't inflate!!!
Just wanted to contribute my opinion. I initially responded to the review titled "Under the Christmas Tree".
Today, I returned my Novaform Topper at Costco as a result of the ends not expanding! I exchanged it for another one. Within minutes of taking it out of the package 75% of it expanded! (the other one was slower!) However, the ends are still having a difficult time for they were the most compacted!
I am going to give this one a few days just as I did the last one but my gut tells me that I am going to have the same problem as I did with the last one! Too bad because when I laid on top of it, it felt amazing!! Even on my living room floor where it sat for nearly one week!
***When I made my return at Costco today, the lady told me that they are getting at least one return per day!! That is pretty high if you ask me!!

Novaform topper, The memory foam Con!
by jiggapimp420 ,Nov 28 '04
Pros: The mattress works good the first few days.
Cons: Gradually becomes less viscoelastic, overpriced, and of poor quality!
I have had my novaform topper for about two weeks now. It is 2 inches thick. At first it was very soft and conformed to my body very well. Over time it became more stiff and the matress would not conform and would spring back into shape really fast. It is now acting more like a normal foam topper. When my wife sleeps in the middle of the bed, the whole thing dips down pulling me towards the middle of the bed.
I have not been getting good sleep like I did when I first got it, and now I wake up frequently from discomfort. The foam does not keep the shape of my hand anymore, like on the commercials. It just springs back into shape. I would not recomend this topper to anyone!
For what the topper cost, there are far better memory foam toppers out there for the same price, if not cheaper!

Avoid memory foam mattress toppers.
by linuxlund ,May 12 '05
Pros: Use it to sleep on the floor when you have relatives over.
Cons: Develops a pit. Difficult to move around on, irritating.
I bought the two inch thick NovaForm memory foam mattress topper. It's just foam. That's ok because I wanted a soft topping mattress on my new firm hard queen size Sealy Posturepedic. This combination is very good. I wish all could have a bed as nice as mine. But you need a bed pad topping to make space between you and the plastic foam so you don't sweat. I'm feeling sleepy thinking of my bed. Zzzzzzzzzz...........

Correction, 6 months later. I had to remove the mattress topper because it developed a pit which I kept rolling into. The entire mattress was swampy in the way that it's difficult to change sleeping position on it, I awoke feeling stuck repeatedly. After I removed it my firm flat bed was so much better. A firm bed is nothing to be afraid of, apparently.

Novaform has MOLDED from moisture
by picturegeek ,Apr 27 '06
Pros: Comfort
Cons: Absorbs moisture, holds dampness and develops mold!
After searching I can't seem to find anyone who has had problems with their Novaform growing mold besides me. I had to throw one away it was so overcome with mold. I live in San Francisco, a damp climate and often sweat at night. The topper lies above an air mattress made of plastic. Perhaps the inability of the air mattress to absorb ambient moisture causes mold build-up. Before throwing away the topper I bought a mattress cover made to protect mattresses from bed wetting. It provides a barrier from my sweat, but the topper still sucked enough moisture from the air to cause mold. As if this wasn't enough, to lower the moisture reaching the memory foam, I bought a dehumidifier. Still the topper was damp and molded. I am not happy. Is there no plastic cover that will surround the memory foam topper? I liked it before it molded. Am I the ONLY person with this problem?

Novaform Choices Mattress Topper
by ellenmarcy ,Oct 24 '07
Pros: A cover that zips easily over the foam. The directions are clear.
Cons: This product emits a strong chemical odor- one that has not faded in three days.
I just purchased a Novaform Choices Topper from COSTCO. It fluffs up fine to its 2.5 inches in just 24 hours from the vacuum packaging. However, I am at day three and I have had to sleep in the second bedroom because the chemical smell from the mattress is so prevalent that I can't sleep in my own bed. I have the foam cover unzipped so that the foam can air out and the windows open. A note on the carton says that the scent will fade- but when and in how long.

I don't think the trade off of inhaling this odor is worth the softness of the topper. I am giving it another day of airing- but have contacted COSTCO about how to return this item, as it no longer fits into the vacuum packaging.

I purchased a pillow as well- and this has the same chemical smell problem.

I love my memory foam topper from Costco
by jwinarl ,Sep 12 '07
Pros: Inexpensive plus great comfort
Cons: They do tend to slip a bit
I bought mine for less than $100 about 4 years ago. It turned a firm mattress into supreme comfort. So this way I have the support below and the comfort of less pressure. It is still in wonderful condition as I use an allergy barrier mattress pad over it. This also helps to keep it from slipping. It is more economical and better than the $1,000 pillow top my ex husband bought. He ended up adding a memory foam topper after 6 years as the pillow top was compressing so much.

Now I spend many nights with my boyfriend and his mattress is firm. I am waking up sore so I am going to buy him a memory foam topper too.

IF they expand, they work well
by maggierose ,Apr 14 '06
Pros: The replacement mattress my parents purchased works fine.
Cons: Something is wrong with some batches and they stay flat/creased.
My parents purchased a Queen sized one for me at Cosco for Xmas and it NEVER expanded fully after I brought it home to PA. The original fold creases are still in the mattress, the edges are still flat, and also discolored a beige/yellow.

And don't buy it from Cosco unless you live close, because you have to actually return the now MASS of mattress to the store for a refund, even if it's over a 5 hour drive.

Ripoff!
by rockit69 ,May 07 '06
Pros: uhhh?
Cons: Does not work as described
I bought this overgrown waste of space over a week ago and only 5% of it has expanded to its supposed 2-1/2" thickness. Now I have to wrestle this beast back to a crowded store to return it. I'm amazed Costco would sell such a problematic item.........

EXPANDABLE???
by dcreasy2001 ,Jan 05 '06
Pros: the BIG BOX looked nice under the Christmas tree!
Cons: I'm still waiting for it to open up!!!
Okay, someone help me here, is it supposed to take 3 weeks for this ALBATROSS to decompress? I bought it for my wife as a Christmas gift hoping we could slap it on our bed and get a really good night sleep Christmas night. OH NO, after I opened up the box, it states that it will take "up to" 72 hours to fully decompress. It is now closing in on 3 weeks and it is still HALF WAY DONE! It has taken up so much space in our spare room I'm going to send a bill to Novaform for storage fees! I would really like to enjoy this thing, I'll let you know if it ever reaches full capacity and THEN I'll give a review. PLEASE, if anyone has had the same problem with decompression time, let me know, I haven't given up hope yet, but it's really getting "FITFULL" just waiting!

Wish I had read the reviews before buying Novaform
by bombe12 ,May 28 '06
Pros: Competitive price and the odor is not as nasty as expected.
Cons: Difficult to unfold from box without ripping and DOES NOT DECOMPRESS!
I am yet another dissatisfied purchaser of the queen size Novaform topper. I had been told by several friends that it was great, good price at Costco, so off we went to get one.
We followed the unpacking directions exactly, and left it to decompress. I can tell that it will NEVER fully expand, as the ends are completely smashed down and there are three areas in the center that remain humped like a camel.

I'm glad I found this epinions.com page, and I recommend that consumers take a look at other peoples' experiences before purchasing these toppers. I wish I had!

My NovaFoam Mattress is moldy
by granddowager ,Sep 22 '06
Pros: Very comfortable, warm,sleep.
Cons: It is getting moldy in one spot.
In response to Picturegeek, in San Francisco.
I purchased my NovaFoam mattress topper from Costco. I have it on an air mattress, also. The beauty of an air mattress is one's ability to adjust the firmness and the ease of replacement. I am going to try the air mattress that has the pillow top with a mattress pad to see if the moisture is absorbed. I am also turning the topper over every two weeks. Great work out for the upper arms and abs.
I live in Aptos, CA right on the coast and it is very foggy here. My mattress is getting moldy in one spot. Before I return it, I will see if a day in the sun will help get rid of the mold.
Does anyone have any ideas that could help?
Thanks

Novafoam a bad choice
by aucky ,Jun 12 '08
Pros: Small shipping box. Affordable, compared with the superior Tempurpedic product
Cons: Doesn't expand to 3". Rips upon unfolding. Chemical smell can be overwhelming.
I purchased a 3" Novafoam topper from Cosco to put on a rather firm Serta mattress (also from Cosco). The topper comes sealed in a vacuum pack and mine was very hard to unfold without tearing. I let it sit on my bed for 3 days and the pad barely swelled to 1 inch thickness. Parts of it didn't swell up at all. Also the smell from this thing was horrible. I tried sleeping on it but the smell gave me a headache. Anyway, there ARE better memory foam products out there (it's hard to beat Tempurpedic at their game).

Better sleep
by jheins ,Feb 04 '08
Pros: Gentle support without pressure points--makes sleeping more restful.
Cons: Slight chemical smell even after a week out of the package.
I have a bad back and need a firm mattress, but the firmness of the mattress made my hips and shoulders hurt. A friend of mine had this mattress topper on her guest bed, and I slept on it for 5 nights. It was wonderful--I was really tired my first night, and I slept 12 hours on her mattress and felt great when I woke up. It cradles my body in softness and support without any pressure points. I came home and went directly to Costco to buy my own, and I love it!!!!! My husband says it still has a faint chemical smell, but I haven't noticed it. All I notice is that I feel a lot better when I wake up in the morning--lots less stiffness.

Hated it!!
by rainlvr2008 ,Feb 16 '08
Pros: Absolutely nothing
Cons: Not a "soft feeling" but instead a "sinking feeling"....
I know some people just rave about the memory foam, but it definitely isn't for everyone. I bought the Novaform topper from Costco and slept on it for 3 nights and then brought it back. I had WORSE aches and pains with it! I think maybe because it's hard to move since you "sink" into it... The memory foam topper makes it feel like you're being "swallowed by your bed" and "stuck" in one position. Plus, there's just something creepy about laying down and slowly sinking down..... (feels like quick sand).

Novaform topper costco
by jennel35 ,Sep 07 '08
Pros: VERY COMFORTABLE!! just remember to turn it and flip it every few months!!
Cons: Make sure it expands properly!!!
Our first mattress topper from Costco did not fully expand on the edges we waited about a month and finally took it back for another one. It expanded instantly so don't waste time like we id by waiting give it a day or 2 then exchange it. they told us at Costco that about 1 in 15 do that a heads up would have been nice as was quite cumberson to take back.

Novaform 3" Memory Foam Topper
by ckdrew ,Feb 23 '09
Pros: Comfortable, reasonably priced.
Cons: Odor overwhelming
Comfortable but the odor is overwhelming still after a week of ventilating the mattress all day while not being used.   I've developed an extremely bad sore throat and I've actually lost a lot of energy since purchasing this thing, due to being up all night coughing from the odor.    This is with a window open, a fan blowing air out of the room, and a fan running 24/7 in the bathroom.

Manufacturer should not be allowed to sell something like this without having the product properly ventilated first.   I purchased a different brand foam topper about 10 years ago and the odor was gone after one day.

If the odor is not gone soon I will be returning the product to Costco.
