Cabo: Worst Ocean Kayak on the Market

by SDF1084 , Apr 18 '00
Pros: tons of gear space, solo or tandem paddling, large weight limit
Cons: bad maneuverability, horrible stability, bad tracking, high price, very heavy kayak, poor durability
The Cabo is by far the worst kayak on the market. My family bought one about 2 years ago and we have since sold it, and we are very glad to get rid of it, as it was clearly a waste of money.

PROS

1. Tons of gear space. This kayak...

Great for Tandem Touring or Camping

by erikmartin , Jul 16 '01
Pros: FAST! Holds tons of gear.
Cons: HEAVY! May not be ideal for 1-person paddling.
This is one of the fastest plastic tandems available, with a large bow hatch, optional center hatch and rear tank well, as well as lots of extra room in the seating areas and in the middle "jump seat." All this makes it possibly the best boat available...

Cabo, Not for Everyone

by kayaker9 , Jun 07 '00
Pros: Carries large amount of gear; Great for tandem touring
Cons: Unstable unless gear is added; Cost new is high
I have used several other sit-on-top kayaks, looking for one to purchase.I purchased the Cabo because I wanted to bring my kids with me. Although the Cabo is difficult to paddle in rough water, it is fairly easy to paddle in calm water.
My son...

Its an 'ok' kayak

by Terenceken , Mar 10 '00
Pros: Able to store gear in hull
Cons: Too expensive for the little amount of quality
I am a lifeguard and love going to the beach, even when i don't have work. I often surf, body board, and kayak. I have used Cabo and found it unsatisfactory. It is extremly heavy, inhibiting speed and making cumbersome on land. I have found that this...

A great boat for guests at the lake or ocean

by drkitty , Sep 14 '03
Pros: Very stable in a variety of waters. Lots of room for kids and stuff.
Cons: Heavy (90 lbs) but stable.
I live at Lake Tahoe and get a lot of visitors wanting to enjoy the lake. I needed a boat I could feel comfortable sending complete novices out on the water, including kids. After a lot of searching, I settled on the Cabo and have been very pleased with ...

Good kayak for calm water

by geoherb , Jun 18 '03
Pros: Capacity and space
Cons: Weight and length
We purchased our Cabo new at a discount (end-of-season sale) for around $600. The advantages of the Cabo, unfortunately, are the things that lead to the disadvantages. It has a large capacity (which was necessary for us at 200+ pounds each). The length...

Good Jack-of-All-Trades Boat

by kickstarter00 , Jun 07 '01
Pros: Versatile, relatively durable, faster than many sit-on-tops, mucho cargo.
Cons: Not as fast as some of the newer singles (OK Sprinter and Cobra Eliminator.)
If you can only afford to get one boat for all your needs, this is a fine choice. Have had mine for 3 years of touring, day trips and whale-watching--the bow hatch seal is now torn and the keel has some scratches, but this is usually because I'm too...

Pros: Speed, Cargo Capacity, 3 Seat Positions, Cargo Well
Cons: Unstable In Some Conditions, Hard To Handle When Dry
OCEAN KAYAK CABO PROS Fast! Narrow width and long length make it quick for a tandem sit-on-top Tracks well in light conditions, even without a rudder Storage capacity: large forward hatch space and rear tank well. Weight carrying capacity ...

An appropriate kayak for rough waters and all range of paddlers
by kwellman ,Sep 26 '06
Pros: Stable; strong construction
Cons: Wide and short.
I don't own this boat. I have paddled one only once, on the NaPali Coast of Kaua'i, Hawaii. I am a confirmed closed-cockpit, fiberglass-construction, sea kayak paddler. My motto is "the longer (and more narrow), the better." But, for challenging waters such as the NaPali Coast, the Ocean Kayak Cabo is a very good boat. A typical day paddle along this coast is a 17-mile paddle in swells to 10', and strong following winds (15-20 knots). You launch and land in 3' breaking surf. That is a typical day--it can be much worse. For my wife and I, a Cabo double worked well. After about an hour paddling in the NaPali Coast conditions, we were very comfortable

a kayak for kayakers!
by sapocantor ,Oct 31 '04
Pros: Lots of space to load whatever you can think about!
Cons: Heavy on the water...heavier out of it!
I live in Costa Rica and paddle in many different water types. My new Cabo is just the boat I was looking forward to get because of the speed and stability. I bought it a few weeks ago because I was looking for a bigger boat that could handle both: my girlfriend and I.
I really liked the way it goes on the water, is really stable and holds lots of gear.
The only problem I see with this working horse is the weight! It's a little heavy in the water...and a little heavier out of it.
It's for sure a boat for real kayakers...not for everyone who just want to take a ride. Recommended!!!

Stable and fast
by oceancabo ,Jul 30 '08
Pros: Very stable
Holds lots of equipment
Comfortable and spacious

Cons: Less maneuverable, i.e. can't turn on a dime
Heavy to pick up for one person

I've owned the Cabo for a number of years now and use it for ocean going. It is a large kayak and can hold plenty of equipment, carry an additional passenger, and is great for scuba or fishing. A great all round tandem kayak for ocean fun.
