Pros: scans, copys, prints, AND faxes Cons: expensive cartridges, poor telephone support, cannot recycle paper
I am a regular person. I have a very small home business that requires a lot of computer work but not so much printing work. I do go to school and need to print out assignments. My family and I do a lot of net surfing and frequently print out websites ...
Pros: Flatbed multisheet photocopier.
Sharp printing with good colors. Cons: Large footprint especially when opening copier.
Very slow when used with a Mac (OS X).
I own 3 officejet g85 all-in-one devices and use them under Windows XP, Windows 98, and Mac OS X 10.2.3 -- this machine behaves differently under the two operating systems.
First, the all-in-one contains a fax, color scanner, color ink jet...
Pros: Works well when it works Cons: Annoying software, poor quality (two replacements this year,) expensive cartridges, often rejects refills or generics
It's a relatively good machine and it does get the job done when it works. On my first machine the paper handler started jamming on every page of a FAX making it necessary to FAX each page separately from the glass. After getting the paper ...
Pros: Complete functionality, quality workmanship, intuitive software and front panel, impressive operation and output. Cons: More expensive than some, but appears to be worth it after 1 year of use.
We searched over a dozen sites for several weeks before deciding on the HP D135. We use it at home and not for any business purpose. We have had it now for a year and I have run it through most of its functions.
Pros: They don't make it anymore? Cons: See review. Bad scanning, feeding, software. Expensive and annoying.
I'm a longtime HP fan and use their products extensively. I've used their testing equipment for 25 years, and their printers since before the HP Laser Jet 4L. I use their HP 48G calculator only because it's easier to convert units than on my HP 28S.
That being said, WASSUP wit dis printer??? Billed as a do all and do it well, I'm sorely disappointed. The fax feeder jams, the toner is $55 for a color cartridge and the software is annoying, incomplete, buggy, and awkward. The scanner often scans poorly (color replication) and it seems to waste power by keeping the scanner light on. Other than that, I love it.
Pros: Good color printing and color photo's. Cons: Cheap plastic take-up and feed mechanism failed in month 18, i.e. out of warranty
I bought the G85 18 months ago. The software worked OK with Windows 2000. The machine produced good quality photo's and color printing, which it was mainly used for. I have printed about 750 pages (I use an HP LaserJet for black & white printing).
However this month (month 18), the take-up paper feed mechanism failed; it seems this feed mechanism is made of cheap plastic.
So now the whole machine is useless and it is out of warranty.
This is poor HP quality --not something that would have been produced years ago, nor during the time of Packard and Hewitt....If the rest of HP's product line is as poor quality as the G85, then I will never buy HP again
Great output and features, flimsy internal parts break easily by dvance ,Feb 10 '04
Pros: Good performance, great photo and the best plain-paper output, good features and duplexing Cons: Flimsy plastic parts in paper-handling mechanism break easily and cripple or end use.
Few all-in-one devices will be able to match the quality and speed of the OfficeJet in plain-paper output for printing and copying. Although the price is higher than competing models, I would challenge anyone to go into a store and make a photocopy of their sales flier on the different devices. HP's output is beautiful.
Sadly, I'm having to thrown mine away after only 17 months. My monthly printing is less than 250 pages, yet little plastic pieces have been breaking off from inside the paper-handling mechanism for the last five months (funny, just after the warranty expired!). The latest small piece to break happened this week, and I now I have to pull each page as it comes out.
The lesson I learned is this: If purchasing an OfficeJet, definitely purchase the extended warranty. HP has offered to repair the printer for me--for $320.00. How I wish I had another year of coverage.
Dismal product and support - avoid by simoni ,Jun 06 '04
Pros: No much Cons: Poorly made, no support - avoid
Had my G85 for 14 months with home use (infrequent). Now I get on the front panel "Scanner Failure - re-power". I phoned HP who tell me the printer is obsolete and is no longer supported!! They offered me a new printer at "discounted" prices. Boy am I mad!
This seems to be a common problem if you look at various hits at Google.
Not a good buy, sadly surprised by HP by cpomycroft ,Feb 12 '04
Pros: When it printed, it was good quality output. Cons: VERY POOR workmanship/design. Paper feeding mechanisms were surprisingly faulty for an HP.
The quality of the print output was very good, but the machine itself was poor. We were lucky and bought an extended warranty so the store is sending us a check. We had to have a major component replaced while it was still under warranty but now it has just totally broken down. We did not over use it being a small family with very limited needs. We bought a combination machine for space saving quality. My previous, very positive, experience with HP had a major impact on purchasing this product.
Pros: printing and copying quality, easy fax operation, Automated Document Feeder Cons: expensive cartridges, very slow scanning
Installation: without problem.
Printing: quality and speed as specified by manufacturer, enough for me.
Faxing: very easy. Front panel display helpful.
Copying: good enough quality, even in colors, but nothing special to mention. You must bear in mind, that copying using ink-jet device is extremely expensive, compared to traditional copiers, so it is not useful for large volume copying. But if you need it only occasionally, it works fine.
Scanning: quality as expected, but really slow, even in low resolutions. I could not achieve acceptable speed one-pass scanning even with resolutions set for OCR software. Pictures require more time. I was disappointed.
Other issues:
- ADF (Automated Document Feeder) is really nice feature.
- I had to replace the power supply adapter, which broke down one day for no evident reason.
Overall impression: good for printing and faxing, but scanning too slow, and copying too expensive. I am going to buy laser printer/copier for this.
Pros: Its dead, so I no longer have to deal with it. Cons: Undependable and expensive to operate. No support from HP.
Had this unit for a few years. Used very infrequently which is good because it jams 20% of the time. It uses ink very fast. Today it just died, no power whatsoever. HP is no help since unit is obsolete. I have owned a number of HP products over the last 20 years and watched the quality decline steadily to the point that I can no longer justify spending money. I have a Lexmark and Epson which are both vastly superior products for less money.
Great for a lot but not for high speed home office by tamaroo ,Apr 08 '09
Pros: It's a great machine- fax, copy, print and scan in color or black and white Cons: Doesn't fax or copy legal size well.
This is a great little machine that I have used for a home business and would be great for home use as long as you don't use legal size paper much. It's awesome for receiving faxes of any size or length. I've had it for years and it gets heavy use and has not let me down. It tends to jam when you try to fax more than three pages, but if you don't mind hand feeding your long faxes, it works fine. It works perfectly as a printer with any size paper. All around, a pretty good machine but I would not buy it if you use legal size paper for copying or faxing.
