Lens mechanism weak - otherwise great compact camera by amhey ,Dec 12 '07
Pros: Compact, reasonable lens, raw mode, many options Cons: Flakey lens mechanism
This is the third camera of this body family I've had. The lens is good, but the lens mechanism is very weak. The first two cameras - 3 megapixel versions - had lens mechanism failures - one repaired under warranty. I was much more careful with this lens and yet again its failed - too bad as I was just getting creative with the controls.
There are controls like an Olympus manual camera, but also point and shoot modes - so its a good camera to practise skills on.
Its smaller than an SLR - but performs better than some.
However, because of the flakey lens mechanism I can't recommend it.
Pros: great camera Cons: very good i think sorry only 3X zoom had be more
after two year the trouble start
for repair my Olympus i had to pay 300 $ only 1 month
after guarantee i think this is very bad i pay 1100 $
now it`s in repair and i hope Olympus will be nice
Camera is still pricey after all this time, because it's great! by ramsfan195 ,May 26 '05
Pros: Great Color and Sharpness, Macro capabilities outstanding, B&W mode is awesome! Cons: If shooting candids you'll miss them due to slow shutter lag!
This was my first high end digital camera purchase. I have owned this camera for at least two years. As far as I am concerned this is still one of the best digital cameras on the market for shooting nature. Where is really shines is macro photography. It takes outstanding closeups like flowers, bees on flowers etc. Color saturation and sharpness is outstanding. Camera feel solid for it's size. It seems to take forever to use up a set of rechargeable batteries. Camera is very energy efficient even when you use the LCD monitor a lot. Black and white mode is beautiful with rich tonalities and fine shadow details. Flash works great and color is right on most of the time. Major con: Too much shutter lag for shooting candids so most of the time I miss the shot. It takes to long,
Pros: Takes great pictures, Over 5 Megapixel, Uses 4 AA batteries, Cons: 3X Zoom, slow at startup, slow action for multiple shots,
I bought an Olympus C-5050 after selling my Olympus C-2100.
The camera is good for a person just starting out. Once you read the manual and get acustomed to the camera it will prove to be a good buy. It has a 3X zoom which is hard to live with after having a 10X with the C-2100. I'm in the process of selling my C-5050 and purchasing an DSLR camera.
I honestly can say that for the time I used the C-5050 I took some great shots.
Pros: Good weight, highly versatile, good for professional photographers on a budget Cons: No flash causes fuzzy pics, knowledge of manual photography to fully use the functions
The C-5050 is one of the best digital cameras out there. The multi-function settings allow for extreme versatility, and the mini-videos are neat when there is no camcorder available (although it would be great if a light was pre-installed for low lighting videos). It's shape & weight makes it look & feel like a regular 35 mm film camera. For those who are looking for a digital camera with manual functions; this is the camera for you. I originally wanted one of the Olympus digital cameras in the E-Series, but after some comparison, I found that the C-5050 gives has more capability at a much cheaper price.
Pros: easy, lots of features, software easy to use, great deal for the money Cons: nothing major-- lens noisy going in and out, instruction manual could be better
I did a ton of research before selecting this camera and it really paid off. Both pros and laypeople recommended it highly and I agree with them.
The camera has lots of features and lots of manual options but is still easy to use. This is my first digital camera, but I was able to figure out how to use it within a few minutes. I like the AA battery option and the media card options. If you have ever used a manual 35 mm camera, you will love this one, but if you haven't don't be scared off! The movie option is cool, too. This camera is a great deal for the $$$. Most other cameras with its features were much pricier without the great reviews. It is a bit on the bulky side compared to some other models, but it's still pretty compact. However, if you are looking for something to put in your pocket, keep looking. I'd prefer a hard book to the CD Rom manual, but a the small manual included is OK for getting started. I am very pleased with this camera!
Pros: Macro mode is awesome, along with the other photos taken W/ 5 megapixel clarity Cons: 1. Shutter lag, 2. shutter lag, 3. shutter lag, 4. 3x zoom isn't enough
In a nutshell: WOW!!
I bought this camera 2 months ago, when I thought the price vs. megapixels ratio was at the point I could afford. Macro photos are jaw-dropping. 5 megapixels provides enough clarity for 8X10 prints.
On the down side, shutter lag is horrid for any motion shots. The 3x zoom isn't enough, I think I'll be buying the zoom extension (and the macro extension too, because they've got me hooked).
Overall, I'd buy it again, it's that good of a camera!
Pros: Olympus quality, Great photos, takes 3 types of memory cards Cons: none
This is a top notch pro-sumer camera.
If your wanting a point and shoot camera, this can do it, plus, once your ready to set your own settings, it allows you to do so.
Awesome lens, really shines at Super Macro photography.
With the newer c-5060z out now, the price on this 5050z has dropped big time. Between the two, I would stick with the 5050z and forgo the wider angle lens afford by the 5060.
Best Digital Camera at that price by kriz34 ,Dec 15 '03
Pros: Excellent aperture range Cons: View finder flips only 90 degrees.
I bought Olympus C-5050 recently and I should say it is a wonderful product at that price range. Before buying this product I did a research on many camera's and I should say there are many camera's which hide the Aperture range.
Olympus C-5050 comes with F1.8/2.8 - F8.0(W-T) aperture range which beats all the common complaints with digital cameras for getting dull pictures in the night. A proper usage of this camera with a combination of a good printer will generate pictures of amazing quality and one can never find out whether that picture is a normal photograph or is a print.
With the specifications it provides, this camera will last for a while and is a good choice.
The only complaint with this camera is the view finder flips only 90 degrees, where as Olympus C5060(A very close product to C5050) flips in 360 degrees. This feature is particularly useful when you are using the remote control to take the pictures.(You can see what you are getting in the picture by flipping the viewfinder in your direction. However the Olympus C5060 comes with F2.8-F4.7/F8.0(W-T) aperture range.
Long Delay After Shutter Button is Pressed - Lose Photos by monocacy01 ,Sep 04 '04
Pros: Compact, uses AA batts, great optics Cons: Long delay after pressing the shutter causes shots to be lost.
Our family has bought almost every generation of Olympus digitals for four years. Great cameras and I love my E10. The 5050 was a gift for my wife to replace her 2100. While the crisp photos and excellent optics were appreciated, the at least one second delay from when you pushed the shutter until the photo took was maddening. Unless you were taking a picture of a wall, or a rock you missed the picture!
Olympus customer tech support apologized and stated that while they had a number of similar complaints there wasn't anything that could be done to speed up capture of a photo.
We sold the camera on Ebay for a loss.
Olympus, if you are reading this, shame on your engineers. We have bought at least 8 of your cameras for ourselves, the kids, relatives as presents, etc. But you have lost us as your customers.
Pros: Clear, crisp photos and a short learning curve. Cons: None
The Olympus Camedia C-5050 Zoom Digital Camera is a marvel. This my second Olympus, my first was a D360 which also took fantastic pictures. I researched cameras that had the capabilities to take great sports, holiday and nature photos. I was not disappointed. I took this to a soccer game and took about 50 photos in the various modes. Downloaded them and wow!! Easy to use controls are a bit small but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure them out. I purchased a 128MB xD Picture Card which gives you a lot of photos. If you are looking for a versatile camera with an amazing array of capabilities by all means get the C-5050.
Pros: Not Sure Cons: Reliability, Customer Service
After only 100 days mine went belly up. Missed Thanksgiving and probably Christmas too. Olympus very, very slow to repair. My first and last Olympus purchase
Olympus Is Terrible, buy anything else to save yourself a headache by mymam111 ,Oct 25 '04
Pros: Absolutely nothing I can say good about this camera. Cons: 6 weeks for repair on a new 400.00 camera?
This is the second Olympus I have bought in a row that broke down with very little use. This one has been out for two weeks and I am told that I can expect another 4 week wait before it is repaired.
This is why I paid 400.00 for this product? I had to buy another so i could have a camera on my trip to london. In my opinion, never buy Olympus.
Stunning photographic results ....Bar none by canuck-bc ,Oct 09 '03
Pros: Excellent pictures, and vivid colours Cons: Lag time between button press and photo capture
After owning 4 digital camera's, I was sick of the cheaper models that quite simply would not last. I purchased this camera due to a suggestion by a Local photographer. This camera, took excellent shots and was practically indestructible. My first picture is now a local post card,, and honestly,, I am a moron when it comes to photography and composition..etc. I do have a few problems with the camera however despite the excellent results.. First and formost.. This is not a point and shoot camera.. the lag time is far too long.. I missed many opportunities due to this.(Nov 2007) After a few years of owning this camera, I started to get a purple and green line affect on all photos with a high white balance level. In contacting the company, I learned that this is an issue with the coating on the lense. Something about mold or fungus. Olypus will only fix it for free if the camera is less then 4 years old. Otherwise this camera gave me some good results) I choose not to have the camera fixed at my expense, instead I put the $205 repair bill towards a new camera
Olympus 5050 - A Positive Experience by revan ,Sep 23 '03
Pros: Ease of use, flexibility, ability to do it all, various memory card formats. Cons: Shutter lag is an annoyance, but only because everything else works so well.
The camera is easy to use. It offers the basic point and shoot simplicity or the features and associated complexity of an SLR. It provides great pictures and is everything and more than expected from a former Olympus 3030 owner.
The Olympus is more than... by mressa_dt3000 ,Feb 07 '03
The Olympus is more than adequate for 99% of your print requirements and 5MP strikes a good balance in the areas of file size and write speed. I’ve come to the opinion that Olympus may have recently recalibrated their software to correct the reported noise problem and zeroed out the sharpness, contrast and saturation adjustments. In terms of the reported CA issue, I simply haven’t shot into situations where this is a problem.
Point is, the camera takes wonderfully sharp, contrasty, and “noiseless” photographs that 99% of the people using this camera would be hard pressed to differentiate from a 35mm pro-sumer SLR.
The magnesium body has weight, it feels solid, it fits your hands perfectly, the controls are where you would expect them, and there is just the right number of external controls. The single caveat is the lens extension. To fix permanently install an Olympus CLA-1 conversion lens adapter and a UVa filter.
Bottom line, the Olympus exceeded my expectations.
My other baby is the Nikon Coolpix 5000, but the C-5050 is easier to understand and operate. You will have a lot of a camera for your money. Applause for Olympus!!

This a great camera. The adapter for filter is a feature found on few other digital cameras. You can actually put a polarizing filter on this camera. The NiMH batteries last about 100 shots. The picture quality is super, as good as my Nikon SLR.

I have moved from the olympus D300 to C2020 and now the C5050. This camerera has the fetures I had on a Cannon T90 which was a professional model all the way. If you are a novice that wants to move up, this will delight you with every new feture you learn how to use. Be sure to purchace at authorised distributor or rick not having a warnty
This camera is amazing. You really do get the best bang for the buck in this camera. Great ergonomics, lens, imager and feature set. This is a camera one can grow into, from an amateur to a professional and is reasonably priced. For all u cheap bastards out there that complain about the manual, go and print it at your office and stop griping. The pictures, the start up and write to card times and the in camera picture review and image compensation are overall excellent. This camera uses several different storage mediums and different types of AA batteries as well as single use olympus lithium type so there should be no griping about either of these things as batteries are cheap and plentiful. Dont listen to the people who talk about esoteric terms and bitch about really trivial things in thier reviews, im telling u if u want the corvette of current 5mp cameras this is the one.
The lag time between taking... by iec950cb_dt3000 ,Feb 09 '03
The lag time between taking pictures is poor at best. I turn the camera on with the lens cap still in place. It sounds like the lens is pushing into the cover which does not secure to the lens itself. This straining sound is followed by an alarm that indicates the lens cap has not been removed. The camera should have the protective plastic films that are common for most electronics devices. The video feature audio is slightly out of sinc with video during playback. The popout display is great if you are viewing with the camera at your waist line. It cannot be used if the camera is above your head. The max ISO is 400. Would have been nice to see 600, 800, 1000
3 slots for memory cards, you can only use 2 at the same time. SM & XD use the same slot. Only Olympus type cards for the panaramic option. Red eye. Even at close range the light is not enough to reduce the pupil size. Dogs are dificult at best.
A state of the art Piece of equipment.
I'm a long time semi pro photographer, I've own bought 4 digital cameras and now I'm using 2.

Outstanding camera!. Before this camera I was shooting SLR 35mm film. I have been using Nikon SLR body and lenses.
I've been waiting for a quality digi camera with little or no "shutter lag", this is it!!
Very flexible camera. Has many preprogramed functions or you can shoot in total "manual" mode.
Construction is very solid. I'd buy this camera again tomorrow.
Over the years I have... by doodle_dt3000 ,Feb 24 '03
Over the years I have owned an OlympusOM10,Nikon F401,Nikon Pronea.Fujii finepix 6800 zoom. This camera seems to offer fantastic quality, easy to use once you spend uninterrupted time playing around with it,also it seems like an excellent camera in a compact size, allowing for more control over piccies but easily goes in my handbag.Other 35m cameras have been great sharp pictures but needed a trolley on wheels to transport.I would willingly reccommend this camera. For those of you who are dubious about these reviews - I do not work in photographic sales so have no ulterior motive in my reccommendations.
I have over 10 years experience in pro photography, I have also significantly researched/used other similar products Nikon 5700, Canon G3 and Fuji Digital Camera. Nothing can come close to C5050Z. All I can say it is an incredible camera. Well constructed, incredible pictures and do not worry about others claiming the CA problems, this happens in all Digital cameras. With a bit of adjustment and/or Photoshop you’ll get rid of the CA if it ever happens.Lots of Pro Camera like features. Do not think twice, if you need a digital camera this is the one.
We do a lot of indoor shots with less than good lighting. The C-5050 is about as good as it gets. We tried the Sony DSC S85 with the Carl Zeiss lens - NOT EVEN CLOSE - sorry Sony -Olympus has you here. The ability to adjust flash intensity while shooting is Great !!! Color reproduction is Fabulous.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase, I knew that no camera would be perfect but this one comes close. The 5X7 prints are amazing, rivaling my Nikon N70 35mm. the 8X10's are nearly the same and definetly good enough to hang on the wall. The battery issue is balanced with the fact that it uses a standard battery (AA's). the lens cap is a minor pain but everything else about this camera is awesome
As an old pro of many years ago standard cameras were very comfortable. The alure of digital imaging finally caught me as I am also a computer freak.Although I have only had this camera a few days I am still absolutely amazed at the quality and capacity of this unit. Once I have my mindset trained I anticipate a happy relationship with this camera.
Come on Olympus! for a... by thomas_dt3003 ,Jan 11 '03
Come on Olympus! for a camera that lists for $800.00 you have to buy a user guide for $10.00. Otherwise this is an awesome camera. What picture quality! Great feature is ability to use multiple type memory cards. Many bells and whistles, maybe too many. Highly recommended.
There is no other camera I am aware of under $1200 that comes close to these features. I needed the studio flash connection, manual controls, and the super-macro; the rest is gravy. The learning curve is steep, perhaps impractical without printing out the full manual included on CD only. It has a Chevy lens and Lamborgini controls--it does everything but get up and walk. All zoom lenses compromise the extremes of focal length to some degree, and the best performance is in the middle; this one works well. I looked at the usual suspects, F717, 7i, and Coolpix 5700, none matched the economy (higher ticket prices, memory sticks, and exotic batteries). Any of the four cameras will provide excellent performance under most conditions; I made my decision based on the plush feature set of the C-5050.
