The candid digital camera that can't do candid

by hangfire , Dec 09 '06
Pros: Small size, high resolution pocket camera.
Cons: Grainy pics make both Image Stabilization Mode and low light Bright Capture Technology useless.
There was a lot to love when I shopped for the Olympus- previous good experience with the brand, huge rear display, tiny size, handy shape, optical zoom, huge 7.1 Megapixel resolution. I took some pics in the well-lit camera shop, used the zoom feature ...

NO FOCUS

by dkla2001 , Oct 02 '06
Pros: Beautiful camera. Easy to use.
Cons: Lacks viewfinder, problematic Flash, RED EYE ALWAYS. CAN'T FOCUS ON ANYTHING.
I had an event I wanted to take a small camera to, and had very little time for research. I checked on epinions, and saw that all brands had their fans and had their pros and cons. Consumer Reports was helpful, as always to a point, as there were so ...

Stylus 710: Problems with the 2.5" LCD display

by zephyr99 , Jul 21 '06
Pros: Excellent form factor w/great menus; lightweight; easy to use; water resistant
Cons: xD Card tough to inset/remove; screen cracked 2x; grainy pix in auto mode
We finally were able to use the 710 - after having to exchange it twice due to the screen cracking internally (see below). The form factor is superb - the 710 is lightweight and easy to grasp with the buttons well positioned. This is important since I ...

HARD TO BEAT IN EVERY WAY

by lkm111 , Jul 30 '06
Pros: Extremely competitive price, professional optics, compact control center
Cons: In direct sunlight the LCD [also viewfinder]is nearly impossible to discern.
Olympus has a reputation for making a fine camera going back to OM-1. In my view they have never made a finer camera dollar for dollar than the 710. To begin with its durable. From the sturdy metal case to the precision optics nothing is composed of ...

Nice pocket camera

by anudderpinion , Jul 26 '06
Pros: Fits in a pocket, and print quality is good.
Cons: XD cards aren't as flexible as SD, and the Olympus software is limited.
I bought a 710 for a vacation, and it was perfect for quick snapshots. I had a small Minolta digital (4mp), but wasn't happy with the print quality. I almost went for a big digital SLR that would take perfect shots, but figured the photos I take are ...

Great little camera!

by nickyd816 , Jan 15 '08
Pros: nice LCD, compact, many features
Cons: a bit slow, no scratch protection for LCD
We bought this camera because we needed something a bit more compact than our Olympus Camedia. We loved the Olympus & decided to stay with it. I purchased this camera at Circuit City which was the best deal around. The large LCD display is great. Just ...

not impressed
by haowen ,Feb 18 '07
Pros: size
Cons: blurry, grainy pictures; too bright flash
I bought this camera after having a Casio Exilim EX-P600 because I wanted something smaller, and liked that it had image stabilization and was weather resistant (important for camping, etc). However, in comparison with my previous Casio Exilim, I have been extremely disappointed with the picture quality - except for outside in bright, indirect light, a good 2/3 of the pictures are blurry and/or incredibly grainy. While its size means that I almost always have this camera with me, I am frustrated and disappointed every time I load the pictures onto my computer.

Could be better
by winkinkat ,Apr 28 '06
Pros: Ease of use. Weatherproof. Size. Fair battery life. Stabilization feature.
Cons: xD card. No electric adapter. USB doesn’t charge battery. Small internal memory. No view finder
Nice size. Like the stabilization feature. Fair battery life, but no electric adapter to connect for camera use or battery charging and to purchase adapter it's a 2 piece accessory (combined price of about $80). Also USB adapter does not charge battery - only connects to pc for download. No case. Not enough internal memory. Don't like XD memory card standard, prefer SD card as it's more versatile. Prefer cameras have view finder as well as LCD screen. I've had older Olympus cameras and they've improved the mode selection process. Older cameras activated the telescopic lens to pop out even when only selecting play, seemed to be a waste of motor use. This one extends lens only for record/picture taking modes.

Disappointed
by jskier ,Dec 25 '06
Pros: Lightweight, easy to use
Cons: Grainy and poor quality pictures, flash isn't very bright
I got this camera for Christmas in hopes of a improved technological, lightweight camera as opposed to my aging but trustworthy although bulky Canon S50 Powershot.

It's small and light, which I wanted, however, the picture quality was extremely grainy on all my shots indoors regardless of the settings I tried. In comparison to the indoor shots I had taken on my older Canon, I found the grainy factor much worse on the 710 even though it has 2 more megapixels.

I only want to print photos occasionally as well as post them on an online gallery, so I'm not asking much. I don't recommend this camera unless you don't expect much for quality in your pictures. It also doesn't have a viewfinder, which isn't a huge deal for point and shot simple stuff, but the LCD screen can't always be visible in every situation.

I'd write more but I'm returning this camera as soon as I can.

This camera is THE DEAL!!!
by malcolm007 ,Aug 07 '06
Pros: Weather resistant, great price, nice size, variety of shooting modes, lightweight.
Cons: It’d be nice to have more internal memory.
This is a cool little camera. Takes great pictures no matter where I go. Small enough to take with me because of that sweet design its got….not big and clunky! I can’t stand that. I wish it had some more internal memory but that’s what those crazy memory cards are for. The xd card works well for me, compact like the camera. It’s got a shooting mode for just about everything, which is great for the photography I do around town. This camera is “the deal”.

happy with my camera!
by loving_life ,Aug 16 '06
Pros: very light, compact, good battery life, sleek design, big lcd screen, all weather.
Cons: no case included to fit the small design, battery charger a little flimsy and big.
Very light weight, more so than my old Olympus one by almost half. There are a lot of scenes to choose from, to help those too lazy to adjust their own setting, which I find very helpful at times, especially the sport setting. Sunny day pics turned out very harsh at first(shadows, harsh lighting), but I learned how to adjust the balance afterwards, using the lighting scale. This takes a few clicks to get to, so it can try some photographers patience when you want to shoot the momment!
This is my second camera from Olympus and I've been happy with this cute camera.
Oh, and I've dropped it a few times already and had a mishap with a cocktail...still no issues...=)*crosses fingers*

I Love It
by bobinheber ,Mar 10 '07
Pros: Size, picture quality
Cons: None yet
I bought this after attending a funtion where my Olympus 510 was a dinosaur. I purchased another Olympus because of the quality of my first one. This one is about 1/4 the size of the old one and a lot easier to use.

Bought it at Costco for $169.99 and purchased a 2 gig card for another $50. With the card it now holds 2,500 pics (not that I would wait until its full).

I actually prefer the picture image rather than a view finder so you can get an idea of what your picture will look like.

Not so hot..
by whyrob ,Sep 29 '06
Pros: Size, waterproofing, sleek.
Cons: awkward interface, poor images.
I bought it for the size and the 7.1 mpxls. I am a fairly serious digital photographer. I need to document work related events many of them on the fly. My Cannon had died after 3 years of hard use and I was on the way to an outing and needed a replacement. I have never been satisfied with the image quality. I have lost important photos because I inadvertantly left the camera on closeup mode and moved to a standard snapshot. My Cannons & Nikons would take an acceptable photo under these conditions, no so here.
It was relatively inexpensive but in the end, not worth it.
I think I paid $280 + $70 for a XD card. They are selling cheap on ebay now because I think people are dumping them. I'll wind up dumping this one and buying another Cannon or Nikon. I am disappointed in Olympus. I should have checked it out more closely.

One flaw too many
by psuba98 ,Aug 04 '06
Pros: Fantastic performer indoors. Guide and Scenes features are great!
Cons: Not an outdoor camera. No viewfinder in the sunshine is fatal flaw!
I thought I was going to love this camera. The many features were easy to use right out of the box. The lack of a viewfinder was fatal from me though. I shoot a lot outdoors which was impossible on a sunny day. The large screen which was awesome indoors was hopeless outside.

Its a decent pocket camera but there are others in this price point that do a better job. The image quality wasn't as good as my Olympus C-5000 5mp.

I had high hopes and the camera performed well indoors with lots of helpful settings and the on-board Guide feature. I was disappointed as soon as I stepped outdoors.

I returned the camera in a week and I am trying something else now. I still love my c-5000.

I Like It
by stratcat43 ,Mar 21 '07
Pros: Small, compact, all weather ability, long battery life. Takes nice picture.
Cons: On/off button right next to shutter button.
I had a Kodak easy share but was looking for an upgrade that was compact. I searched alot of reviews and chose the Olympus Stylus 710. I can agree with some of the reviews as some of the pictures seem unfocused and/or grainy, however I downloaded the full manual from the disk and it's making the picture taking better. So if you're looking for a point and shoot camera - this isn't it.

But I'm very happy with it. My only real complaint is that the on/off button is on the top next to the shutter button and sometimes I click the off button instead of the shutter button and well....I don't get the picture!!!

I didn't understand the review about battery charging. Mine came with a charger. You take the batteries out and charge them, then but them back in the camera.
