AKA - Oppo Digital - OPDV971H DVD Player : The Geek's Little DVD Player

by randomkill , Jan 12 '06
Pros: Well thought out bells and whistles and all around well built electronics .
Cons: Remote sucks and DVD tray looks flimsy. MUST HAVE DVI OR HDMI HDTV!
Ah Epinions, out to make me nuts again with your incredibly useless search engine and product descriptions I see. Well too late fools! That happened years ago around the time I started reading McTurbot reviews and wearing ...

Get One Now Before Their Reputation Gets Out and Price Go Up!

by wyomr2 , Jan 22 '07
Pros: Price and convenience with HDMI hookups can't be beat!
Cons: Build quality could be better, no component video outputs.
OPPO is a relatively new company in the US as far as their DVD units are concerned. In actuality they make almost as many DVD players as Sony and Panasonic do, but have only recently marketed them in the US. I recently purchased the OPPO DV-981HD on ...

Highest Ranked DVD Player, Takes Another Step UP!

by schafercorp , Mar 21 '07
Pros: 1080p, HDMI, BEST PICTURE ON MARKET.
Cons: None! But would be nice to have a GAMMA adjustment.
Oppo Digital's DV-971HD has been ranked as the number one player available, by professional reviewers, and magazines, upon buying one, I must agree, it no doubt is the best overall. BUT it had a serious handicap it was a 1080i player in a 1080p world and ...

High End Quality At a Reasonable Price

by jesterrace , Dec 26 '06
Pros: Faroudja chip for best possible picture, 1080p, wide variety of supported formats
Cons: No component Video output, Surround Sound not quite as good as the previous model (971HD).
Only discovered Oppo Digital a few weeks back. For years I have had a Panasonic S-35 which has been great for my standard 27" Zenith; however I recently upgraded to a 37" Westinghouse 37W3 LCD TV with True 1080p HD-Ready display. Needless to say the S-35 ...

Worth the Price

by sailingshot , Feb 13 '08
Pros: Does audio/video very well, sweet looking and well designed.
Cons: Virtually no front panel controls. Remote MUST be used. No big deal.
Sure, I have Blu-ray and HD-DVD and I have a hi def projector with a 120 inch screen in a dedicated home theater/Audio room...BUT, MOST of the DVDs around are still in 480P standard Def format and that's a fact of life. What is it? The Oppo is a VERY ...

Not for the impatient. But the quality may be worth the wait.

by brycenn , Jan 19 '06
Pros: Digital video out. Perfect PAL/NTSC conversion.
Cons: Slowest DVD player I have ever experienced.
In a world where you can buy a DVD player in the convenience-store checkout line, why would you spent $200 on a premium player? Digital video is the answer. This player's nameplate feature (and in fact, as far as I can tell, it's only notable ...

Very Satisfied

by dophin26 , Apr 17 '06
Pros: Digital interface, firmware updates, nice picture
Cons: occasional lip sync problem, remote is poor, no sacd playback
The Oppo DVD player has performed very well for me. I like several features about it: 1. The DVI interface. I have an HD Television and it has 2 HDMI ports. The player connects through DVI, but it came with a cable that converts DVI to HDMI ports, ...

GREAT Underground DVD Player with A Lot of Potential!

by reviewa , Feb 08 '06
Pros: AMAZING picture quality, Budget player with high-end design!
Cons: The remote, the little first-year kinks still being worked out.
I've owned this player for about 6 months and have enjoyed it ever since! This DVD player is being called the BEST Budget DVD Player on the market in 2005! And boy, they weren't kidding. This Oppo Digital DVD Player has been compared with other DVD ...

High Quality, Low Price

by xarchy , Nov 02 '08
Pros: PRICE!  Features, upconverting DVD, quality craftsmanship,
Cons: None I've found yet.
Our ancient DVD player was in need of replacement, so after doing much research, I discovered an obscure company with the unlikely name of Oppo.  It turns out that Oppo had been provided the guts to other high-end companies but finally put out their ...

Excellent picture
by kelnav ,Feb 06 '07
Pros: Great picture and film soundtrack decoding.
Cons: The damn blue light!!!!! Good at music CDs but not audiophile quality.
The Oppo line has been receiving quite a bit of good reviews since they started selling their DVD players a couple of years back. Deservedly so.

The main purpose of this machine is to play DVDs, and that it does in excellent form. Truly, the best picture I've seen from a DVD player as of date at any price below 2000$.
The accompanying audio for movies is just as terrific, no tracking and decoding problems mated through a Lexicon DC-1's coaxial digital input. As a CD player though it comes up short when compared to, in my case, a 13 year old Meridian 602/606 combo.

One minor annoyance though is that although you can turn off all the front panel lights and display, you CANNOT turn off the power switch's blue light. Distracting, easily covered up with something though.

Great machine at a great price for video, highly recommended.
