Sidekick to the Mad Genius

by scmrak scmrak is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Jan 30 '04
Pros: Few writers can compare to Atwood on style
Cons: Her message is perhaps a bit overwrought
There's something about staring one's mortality in the face - personally or as a species - that humans seem to find eternally fascinating. That's probably why the apocalypse in its many guises is a staple of science fiction. It makes no difference ...

Oryx and Crake: Atwood's Dystopian Future

by lambchops Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Nov 22 '05
Pros: Interesting story, Jimmy/Snowman is a fascinating character, very timely topic...
Cons: No real answers, no real science, not enough attention on Oryx...
Margaret Atwood writes two distinct types of novels. She’s probably best known for her female-centered mysteries like Lady Oracle, Cat’s Eye, The Edible Woman, and Booker Prize winner The Blind Assassin. The Canadian author has written over ten ...

Gene-Splicing Run Amok - A Different Kind of Atwood

by mizgnomer Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Jul 06 '03
Pros: Thought-provoking. Sometimes chilling, sometimes humorous. A good read.
Cons: Takes the entire book to answer the question you will ask in chapter 1...
My first experience with Margaret Atwood's body of work was when I read "The Handmaid's Tale", a chi ...

A brilliant amalgam.

by PKWBassGuy , Jun 15 '04
Pros: The descriptions, the combo of sci-fi with emotional power.
Cons: Not a one.
Two very different books have mated in the brilliant authorial mind of Margaret Atwood and created this stunning, resonant, masterpiece of a novel . If you take “ A Separate Peace” and heart/mind meld it with “ On The Beach” you have ...

Genetic engineering gone horribly, horribly, wrong

by jc_hall , Oct 30 '05
Pros: sympathetic narrator; intriguing set-up and smooth narrative keep you reading to the very end
Cons: frustrating--takes the entire book to deliver the answers you wanted from the very beginning
Much of science fiction deals with dystopia, some of which verge on the apocalyptic. It is not a side of science fiction that particularly appeals to me, as I find the premise depressing and often too far-fetched for me to suspend disbelief. However, ...

Pigoons and Snats - Creative Genius

by jennylovatt , Apr 06 '04
Pros: Vividly creative imagination, unique to Atwood.
Cons: The conclusion does not satisfy the novels expectations.
After reading "A Handmaid's Tale", I was compelled to find more works from Atwood exploring the possibilities of nightmare scenarios that could arise from our modern world. "Orynx and Crake" explores the already raised question of science, and whether ...

Dystopian future so creepy you won't sleep afterwards!

by Bunny74 , Jun 28 '07
Pros: This is an easy read that leaves the reader with serious questions to ponder.
Cons: I wish there had been more characters fleshed out as that is Atwoods forte!
WARNING.... SPOILER... Soome plot detaills are revealed in this review. Taken purely as a work of fiction, it would be incredibly easy to enjoy Oryx and Crake, the most recent product of the brilliant, if not devious, mind of Margaret Atwood, as ...

Inevitible Dystopia

Cons: Obvious targets, not quite what I have come to expect from Atwood

Marshmallow Reading

by jaxvill , Sep 27 '03
Pros: Atwood's style makes reading Oryx and Crake a walk in the park.
Cons: I'm not sure you'll be any better off for having read it.
Oryx and Crake was a breeze. Despite the troubling subject matter it was a breeze. Atwood makes it so easy to just read and read, and one might miss the fact that Oryx and Crake is such a shallow fantasy. I am conflicted. Margaret Atwood constructs for ...

Oryx and Crake
by rita_12 ,Aug 28 '05
Pros: Fantastic story and idea
Cons: writing style
Normally I love books of this nature and after reading the blurb I thought this was going to be a really good book. However amongst all the lessons she is trying to teach us and messages she is trying to give us and shock she was trying to create she forgot the fundamental point of a non-fiction novel and that is to be entertaining. Her writing style is not suitible for this genre and reminds me of the sort you get ina trashy romance novel. Writers like Orwell manage so very well to make stories come alive for us whilst still trying to tell some sort of message and I'm afraid that is where Atwood fails. I thought it was such a shame as I thought it was an amazing idea for a story and I genuinly wanted to find out what happened next. But that would involve me having to trudge through some of the writing which I did not enjoy would I recommend it? Yes but only to satisfy a curiosity not because I think one would actually enjoy it
