Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD Recorder - A VCR Replacement or More?

by dkozin dkozin is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Jun 15 '05
Pros: Low price, solid build quality, responsive, picture and sound quality, easy to use
Cons: No digital inputs, no DVD+RW recording
With DVD recorder prices getting lower and lower, it is difficult not to get one. I needed to archive some programs off my D irecTivo, mainly Formula 1 races that I have accumulated last year on the Tivo's hard drive. ...

Very impressive performance, and affordable

by dhlacey , May 26 '05
Pros: Amazing DVD RAM capabilities, great 4 hour mode, commercial skip, nice menu system, and price.
Cons: Oddly (un)balanced remote, and can't use number pad for TV channels
I purchased this unit at BJ's for $179 a few weeks after they ran out of stock on the older DMR-E30, which I had been pondering for some time, as it seemed to be the best value for the money out there. I'm glad I waited. The ES-10 is significantly ...

Exceptional recording ability

by april54 , Apr 08 '05
Pros: Excellent recording quality.
Cons: Would have been nice if it could record to dvd+rw as well.
This is our second dvd recorder. The first was a Panasonic DMR-E75S combo unit ( vcr + dvd recorder ). The new ES10 is an improvement in that it can now record to more media types, dvd-ram, dvd-r, dvd-rw, and dvd+r. It cannot record to dvd+rw but can ...

Excellent easy to use DVD recorder

by janabouc , Apr 10 '05
Pros: Easy to use; excellent quality; supports all DVD and CD formats. Excellent technical support.
Cons: Confusing manual. Typing chapter titles is slow.
This is my first DVD recorder and I read a lot of reviews before I bought it. I was nervous because it seemed like there were lots of complaints about every model out there. Fortunately, this one is a jewel and I'm very pleased with my purchase. I'd ...

A solid, reliable product

by bmvivek , Sep 15 '05
Pros: Reliable, solid product, whatever it claims - it does well
Cons: No Firewire input, cannot create chapters, cannot read digital pictures from DVD
Summary ------- I bought this Panasonic model after wasting a week trying to get a CyberHome 1600 model to work. This is a great product, but the one feature that is absent is a Firewire input. So, you can never get truly digital quality because you ...

PANASONIC DMR-ES10 DVD RECORDER

by exatronix , Sep 28 '06
Pros: Durability, Features, Multi Format Recording
Cons: Lacks Zoom Button on Remote Control
I bought this unit about six months ago, as a refurb on Ebay. After consulting Epinions, it seemed that Panasonic DVD recorders were among the best. This is my first DVD recorder, and let me tell you I am impressed. It is heavy, and seems very well ...

Not bad for a first DVD recorder.

by jedo1507r , Aug 10 '06
Pros: DVD-RAM capability, three inputs, reliable.
Cons: Remote ergonomics, somewhat sluggish interface, sparse button layout on front of machine.
I had the ES10 since December of 2005 and have not had a problem with it. The recorder is used daily for timer recordings, backing up some of the favorite videotapes, and interestingly enough - as a music player, which is underused in many applications ...

Awesome unit

by techmax , Jul 20 '05
Pros: Records on DVD-RAM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R. Plays just about any format you can think of.
Cons: No Digital audio INPUTS. (But not sure if any units have this.)
I wanted this unit to help me transfer my old camcorder tapes to DVD and also replace my VCR. I didn't go with a Hard Drive Unit as I will probably be adding an HD PVR to my set up soon and thus felt it would be redundant in the future. I have ...

Excellent recorder

by ashjones , Feb 18 '06
Pros: ease of use, high quality, editing features, conectivity, timeslip, stylish design, extremly fast and responsive.
Cons: No built in freeview or hard drive
I bought this product due to how happy i was with a previous panasonic model (DMR-E55) which i found very reliable, high quality and had lots of great features. I used it a lot more than the arerage person and had it for two years and had no problems. I ...

Great product

by telledgar , Jun 02 '05
Pros: Easy set-up, lots of features, compatible with most discs.
Cons: Recording time limited to that allowed by a single DVD.
I've owned this recorder for 2 weeks now & haven't been able to find a flaw. I had a little trouble connecting to my TV to see a picture, but managed to go through my VCR first & everything seems to be ok. I purchased it mainly because I wanted to ...

Nice cheap recorder

by yunlin12 , May 11 '05
Pros: Value, easy of use, connectivity, performance.
Cons: No S-video pass through.
I wanted a DVD recorder that can also dub as a progressive scan DVD player, and I got exactly what I wanted. The specs listed on Epinion is not exactly accurate. It has 2 inputs on the back, S-Video/RCA's, and one input on the front, S-Video/RCA. I don't ...

I WILL NOT BUY A PANASONIC PRODUCT EVER AGAIN

by slappyhands , Jul 30 '07
Pros: Seemed great at first.
Excellent recording and editing facilities.

Cons: Reliability of a chocolate teapot
Lousy customer service
Did I mention the crappy reliability?

Initially, I was really impressed with the product. I thought the editing features were simple yet effective. However, the player stopped working after a year and a half. It went into a continual "self check" loop and then completely stopped. I wrote ...

Buy the extended warranty or another brand
by oxidetoiron ,Jan 18 '07
Pros: Easy to operate inexpensive DVD recorder with good features.
Cons: Bad reliability issues.
This unit failed just after the one year warranty expired. Since it wouldn't even turn on, I opened it up to get my DVD out of it and noticed a bulging capacitor. With a little bit of online research, I found a site that explains the problem well. It can be fixed by someone handy with a soldering iron.

Here is the link...

I was happy with the operation and features it until it stopped working.

Stopped recording
by dmw999 ,Feb 04 '07
Pros: When it worked, it was great. The DVD-RAM time slip feature was nice.
Cons: Recorder stopped working after 2 years.
I owned this for 2 years. I moved it downstairs to a different TV and it no longer records. Get it fixed? Sure, for $140. You can buy a new one for that. Call me picky, but I think electronics should last longer than 2 years. Thumbs down!

Excellent machine
by bear25 ,Sep 30 '05
Pros: High quality video and sound. Reliable
Cons: Slow loading of new disks. It takes time to determine the type.
I have owned this recorder for 6 months. It is my first DVD recorder. It was purchased with nervousness after a careful study of Internet reviews revealed many complaints about other DVD machines. It has performed flawlessly, recording shows off analog cable and from old VHS tapes. The quality is amazing and beats VHS even at the highest compression levels. It has four compression levels. The highest can be either 6 hours or 8 hours with lower sound quality. I have stuck with the 6 hour format and have enjoyed the higher quality stereo sound. Even at that level, I can't see any appreciable difference between the recording and the original of of cable TV.
