A former PDA Virgin tells all and confesses her love for the Palm Pilot M105

by netKat Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Jun 08 '01
Pros: Sleek, Light, Powerful, Compact, syncs with your Outlook... dump your planner!
Cons: Not in color
I'm never the first person to possess a new technology; in fact, I'm usually one of the last. Since I just started a new position, which involves regular traveling and is closer to the trendy world of marketing, I've noticed that most of my peers have a...

Whose bright idea was it to market this thing now??!!

by coffeeaddict , Apr 17 '01
Pros: small, light, relatively cheap
Cons: small screen, lack of expandability functions and expensive for the current market
The palm m105 is a recent addition to the Palm Computing handheld line of products. This handheld is geared towards consumers who are either new to the PDA scene or are economically conscious. This handheld is a good idea, but for the price, it is too...

Trade Down? I Think Not

by quasar Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, May 29 '01
Pros: small, fashionable, clock with press of up button
Cons: no Flash, hotsync incompatibility, small screen, no network hotsync
Usually when a new device is created to replace an older device, it contains all of the functionality of the old device if not more.

A few months ago Palm released the m105 to replace the Palm IIIxe. Sadly, they did not incorporate all of the...

Avoid the m100/105. There are plenty of better handhelds.

by qmrf , Jan 12 '03
Pros: It's cheap, but that's about all it's got going for it.
Cons: Small, low quality screen; fragile cover; poor digitizer, flaky beaming. Like I said, cheap.
For the past 2.5 years, I've been a PalmOS software developer for the University of Michigan's Center for Highly Interactive Computing in Education. (Hi-CE) (shameless plug: http://www.handheld.hice-dev.org/) In this time, I've spent a lot of time...

Palm m105 is great for those who value portability, style

by steelkilt , Apr 06 '01
Pros: small, lightweight, 8MB RAM, carry in pocket
Cons: tiny screen, OS not upgradeable
I bought the m105 to use as a "lightweight" companion to my Handspring Visor Deluxe and I can safely say that the m105 is superior to the Visor in one way, and one way only: size.

The new m105 comes with 8mb of RAM which is quite an...

Pros: Small footprint, pleasant aesthetics, large memory, robust
Cons: Non-existent upgrade path, cover can fall off, lacks raw speed (and multitasking)
The Palm m105 is quite a nice little machine, all things considered. It's small, versatile, quite sturdy, and seems to run my life considerably better than I can. It even functions as a watch, thanks to the porthole on the cover which allows easy access...

Pros: Ease of use, expandability, price, extra memory
Cons: Hard to jot notes in a hurry
As a several-year veteran of traditional paper planners, I have been very hesitant to get a PDA because I was never sure if I would use it. Sure, it's a great toy at first, I reasoned, but would I really use it in the long run? At my company, legions...

General Info on the Palm m105

by gctf , Apr 08 '01
Pros: More features, light weight, non shatter screen, comes with "Note pad"
Cons: Smaller screen size
Since the M105 is a replacement model for the Palm IIIxe, obviously, it is made with better functions and features than the Palm IIIxe.

Major flaw, otherwise immensely useful
by mattmania ,Mar 29 '05
Pros: Cheap to operate (2 AA per month) and buy. Palm OS, cradle.
Cons: Data loss with battery swap of anything not previously sync'ed.
The bad: Every time I have to change the batteries (which I have learned to do in about 5 seconds) the data in the unit is lost. So you need to pay close attention to your battery level, and sync the data before you swap batteries. Sync frequently! Don't leave it in your cold car! Also, the screen is small for my eyes.

The Good: Great interface (Palm OS), connecting to AvantGo.com to get loads of news, content with every sync. Great way to keep all indespensible info, reminders, etc.. on your person at all times. Sturdy, comfortable unit. excellent compromise of size and functionality.

This is a great deal if you know what you're going to use this for, a date book, address book, notepad etc. I use this for a few things, addresses, phone numbers, a few games and for AvantGo. AvantGo is a website that offers mobile versions of websites that can be updated when you HotSync. I originally bought this to be organized and keep all of my appointments. That lasted about a month. I'm glad I didn't spend the extra $400 to get the top of the line colour Palm because it would have been a waste. Before you spend $500+ on a PDA consider buying a cheaper one from a store with a good return policy. Use it for the 30 or 60 days and then decide if you really need that camera or the MP3 player built in. The only thing I don't like about this unit is that it uses AAA batteries. I wish it had a rechargeable pack built in.

Quality not great -- broke far sooner than it should have
by santelmannl ,Oct 10 '04
Pros: Price and functionality - cheap and has all basic functions.
Cons: Quality is lousy. Didn't last nearly as long as it should have.
I need a basic organizer with no bells and whistles and decided on this after my ancient Palm (the original!) hit the floor once too often.

While this one has all the functionality that I needed, the quality and durability are really lousy! The flip cover broke within the first 6 months, and now less than a year later the on-off button has gone. No way to repair.

My palm was not abused -- just carried to work in a pocket of my bag, and taken out and used 3-4 times a day. This was clearly not well constructed. I'm seriously doubting whether to buy another Palm based on this experience.

Also, every time I changed batteries, I would lose all of my data. Very, very frustrating. I was good about syncing it, so I rarely lost anything important, but my earlier model never lost data when I changed the batteries.

Palm m105 for business not pleasure!
by aquariguy89 ,Mar 02 '04
Pros: Easy usability, its notepad, its easy hot-sync capabilities and downloading capabilities.
Cons: No color screen, graffiti writing style and it's shape can sometimes be weird to store .
The Palm m105 is an excellent item for its original purpose to keep your schedule in order. If your looking for games a color screen you may want to look elsewhere. But if you just want to keep your schedule intact and your life in-order (as much as you can) and some small entertainment. This is the item for you! The easy usability and straightforwardness of this product is definitely for the on the go person. This is great for business people, Parent, and the busy teen. The Palm m105 has AOL, Date planner, and Note Pad among other things.

Everything on the palm M105...
by christie_dt3000 ,Mar 13 '02
Everything on the palm M105 is great and it is cost effective, but there is no colour and it would help young adults with a bit of colour for enthusiasm and attractive. the email is a bit slow , but apart from that, everything else is a big pro. I have used one of another brand but basically the same features, but this is better (apart from the colour) because it is fast and inexpensive.

Good while it lasts (until warrantly expired)
by aolsson_dt3000 ,Sep 25 '03
Pros: Cheap. Easy to use.
Cons: Too cheaply built. Loses all data on battery change.
I have just sent my M105 to the garbage can.

The reason is that the tiny capacitor that should allegedly hold the data for just enough time to allow for a battery change ceased to work. This meant that whenever I had to load new alkalines all data was lost. I could of course perform a Hot-Synch before and after this operation but I am not always close to base so this did not really work for me.

Basically I like the simple frugal features of the Palm but I honestly feel that compared to the earlier models the quality has gone down significantly.

First time palm uses should purchase this model its great because it is very easy to use. It is light weight and very afforable. It also changes colors with your outfits. The only thing once you have a new power toy and you get use to it you really don't want to let it go. So it needs more upgrade software for different things. But I love my power toy

this is probbably the best priced palm out there. the next version shoots up in price amd for what? color! i would suggest this product to anyone who needs a palm for work or colledge. it has 8 megabytes of memory which is great for almost infinite notes. the date book and adress book make organizing a cinch. i think this a must for students and graduates alike. it has everything a palm should have, and ,unlike the other palms is not outdated or overpriced

I've been carrying a pocket...
by veinte_balboas_dt3000 ,Sep 01 '02
I've been carrying a pocket calendar for years, but will soon replace it with my Palm m105, which I’ve been using for just over a year now. An example of why I'm switching over is that, with my m105, I am able to carry all of my important phone numbers and addresses with me instead of having to rewrite them each year or leave it at home with last year’s calendar. All other functions offered in the m105 are practical and easy to use. I enhanced my m105 with a third-party office suite and this allows me to take working documents with me on my m105 without having to tackle the expense of a laptop. Of course this would apply if I bought any other PDA, but that is the reason I went with the m105 to begin with--a practical product for a practical price.

by colorado_medic_dt3000 ,Feb 10 '03
I'm a Paramedic and use this device with mapping and medical applications. It's proven itself to be reliable and has taken considerable abuse. Palm REALLY needs to come up with some way to use PDF and DOC files without spending more than the PDA costs. My partner has a Sony and has both PDF and DOC files he can use as well as a backlight that really lights up the screen. I'd buy the Sony!

This is my first PDA. I am quite pleased with it. While my husband refers to it as my toy, it has helped to organize my work much more than my paper planners ever did. In addition, my secretary can make appointments for me when I am out of the office and have my PDA with me. I encourage all my colleages to make the change and to try this model.

by bravesboy786_dt3000 ,Aug 25 '02
If you can reasonably use a computer meaning you could navigate yourself to this review now, then you could without a doubt use this PDA. I spent much time debating whether or not to buy this or the m130 color PDA. Well they have the same space and can pretty much do the same thing. With my shallow wallet I had to give a nod to the m105. It is so light and small (screens a little too small but you won't notice it unless you have used another PDA before) I'd recommend it to anyone with a small budget, who wasn't a business executive, and who wanted to see if a PDA is something they need. It is very durable and even better if you get a leather case. Hey I only paid 90 dollars for it and am using it in the 9th grade. Great for people on the go or pretty much anyone!

I love my M105. I have been using many features, especially Advantgo. What a great program. I only wish I had held for a slightly more advanced model. I've only had mine a week, but I can see that I'm going to fill up the 8MB on this unit very quickly. Still, it does a great job and is much more advanced than I expected for a palm under $100.

by strongman_dt3000 ,Sep 12 '02
Much more practical than my Palm V, or my two Palm 3e's. Athough they have bigger screens. This little unit is very impressive for the price. I have only owned one week. Concerns about battery life, because my Palm 3e's are poor in this regard. Rechargeables is the way to go. Screen really impresses me as I have the Sony Clie T415, and in spite of its higher resolution, is much harder to read than the 105.I really like this little guy.
