Small, Portable, Awesome!

by nadhatter , Oct 29 '02
Pros: Small, Easily Portable, Totally skip-proof
Cons: High cost, unreliable software
The Panasonic SD-80 Mp3 player is an electronic device that allows you to play mp3s (and Windows Media files) anywhere you want to take it. It stores these files on a card (a 64MB card is included), and the files are transferred from your computer via a ...

Great size, unforgivable software

by gt_panda , Jul 15 '04
Pros: Smallest player I can find. Easy to use controls.
Cons: The software interface makes an otherwise great product virtually unusable.
I've owned this little player for about 2 years now and was first attracted to it because of its inconspicuousness. And for what it's worth, it is extremely portable and unnoticeable. I wear it with the lanyard and the headphones under my shirt and ...

Super small with Big sound

by farooq902 , Oct 21 '02
Pros: Ultra compact size and great sound with upgraded ear buds
Cons: Average sound from supplied ear buds
I own both the Panasonic SV-SD75 and the Panasonic SV-SD80. The SV-SD80 is a great mp3 player for the gym. You can put the player in your pocket or actually wear the player with the supplied accessories and at approximately 1oz, you hardly notice the...

Expensive but worth it

by robb31 , Apr 06 '03
Pros: Very Small
Cons: Buttons hard to push in case
Very easy to use has lots of cool gadgets and features. Is a little low on volume. Had no problems loading any music on it (no matter where I got the songs). Will try some new headphones for more volume and better quality but could live with the...

This player is really incredibly well designed. Battery life is amazing, size is unbelievable, sound is great and comes with all the needed accessories. I would recommend this player highly if you are willing to shell out the bucks for the best and...

Makes a nice ornament on the shelf...useless otherwise.

by kamikaze2 , Aug 15 '03
Pros: Small size, precision engineering. Separate clamshell waterproof case with belt clip for runners.
Cons: It doesn't work.
My expectations for a $250 MP3 player are high and this certainly LOOKS worth it, but it simply does ...

Great for non DRM Files
by meske ,Feb 11 '04
Pros: Small size, great sound, multiple file formats, great quality!
Cons: No current support for Napster, iTunes, BuyMusic, etc.
This is a very nice machine! Small, and very convenient. Loud enough to drown out other noises in the Gym, or on the street.

Make sure you go to the Panasonic web site BEFORE installing the Real Software from the included CD. You must install the USB software, but DO NOT install the Real Software. There is an update on the Panasonic website for the new Real Player, and a patch for WMA files.

Here’s where this goes south. I have a decent MP3 collection from ripping my CD’s, and downloading from the P2P networks in the past. I’ve recently started to use Napster and iTunes for downloading these files. Although Real can play both file formats, you are not allowed to copy a file protected by DRM (digital rights management) onto the SV-SD80. This, in my book, is a real downfall.

Napster recently added support for a number of players, but the SV-SD80 is not yet on that list. I’ve sent a support e-mail to Panasonic to see when this function will be available. I sent a similar e-mail to Real. We’ll see what happens.

I had absolutely no trouble...
by seetzer_dt3000 ,Mar 25 '02
I had absolutely no trouble installing or operating the USB reader or jukebox-type software on my WIN2K Dell - a snap. Second, you CAN get larger capacity SD cards (128mb avail.)! Hint: reduce the sampling rate to 66k when you convert music to the player's format. Minimal quality difference and you'll get 60-75% more music on a card. If you buy one, your first reaction will be to stare at it...it's so dang small. Then you will hear the music coming out of it and you will stare at it with your jaw hanging down. Then you shake it...no skips. The "water/sand-tight" extra case (that holds the AAA battery -- I can't remember the last time I had to recharge the player) is ideal for the harder (gym, skiing, biking). My wife lost her new Sony NW-MS9 digital player and I am replacing it with another one of these (and I like Sony stuff). The last benefit is the SD cards also work in my new IPAQ 3870 PDA! Buy this one if you can justify the $250-$300. Last, invest in better headphones!

This product was useless on...
by la_medic_dt3000 ,Mar 21 '02
This product was useless on my PC. We couln't ever get the USB Reader connected without error. We have a standard IMM PC Clone with INTEL MB and INTEL 1.8MHZ CPU, 256MB RAM Complete waste of time trying to even get the Win2000 upgrade as well from Panasonic Web Site. THat didn't install either. This thing is a basic $299.99 -- plus shipping paperweight for us.

I think that this product...
by robbie_dt3000 ,Jan 24 '03
I think that this product is a very good buy. I got mine for christmas and i think it's a wonderful product. I hooked it up loaded the software and i was ready. I had no problem with it working with my windows xp version and i think the sound quality on it is amazing for such a small player. The only problem i can see with this is that the memory card you get is small and without dropping the sound too much you can only get about 30 songs on it. Luckily, i checked the site and there are bigger cards that are coming out so that should be great.

I typically would never think...
by quinco_dt3000 ,Dec 19 '02
I typically would never think of writing a product review, but this product deserves one. I tried to install it on two different computers and could never get the software to install properly on my Windows 2000 computer (problems with the UBS drive). I did get it to install on my Windows 98 computer, but, eventually, an error occurred and it no longer works (again, the UBS drive). I have tried to have the IT people at work help me to no avail. I have also tried to contact Panasonic for assistance several times via phone. Each time I called, they actually told me that someone would call me back within 24 to 48 hours, which I thought was outrageous. To this day (4 weeks from the 1st call), I still have not heard from them. I have also tried to contact them via email. The response that I received was that due to the volume of inquiries, their response would be delayed. This product has only caused me frustration. I urge you to not purchase this product. It's a waste of money.

by krisg_dt3000 ,Mar 06 '03
I had this unit for almost 6 months now and it is with me everywhere I go (or run). I am impressed by the playing time even without external AAA battery. I am playing mp3 files on that beauty and I do encode them at 64 kbps (to fit more music). I am using 512 MB SD Card (I know high capacity DS cards are expensive, but prices are going down) and I have plenty of room to listen. The quality of sound is very good even at 64 kbps (unless you are extremely picky). Taken together a very good buy indeed!
