  • The Scariest Bug-eyes in Movie History

    Pros: Memorable monster
Cons: Far too long and hard to follow

Summary: The story of the Phantom of the Opera has been around for quite a long time. My only exposure to it up to the point of this silent movie was the Webber Broadway musical so I have little basis of comparison as far as incarnations of the story ... read more

    Pros: Make-up, color inserts.
    Cons: Pacing was way off.

Summary: In 1890’s France, the Paris Opera House is said to be cursed. Handing over the reigns to its new owners, the former owners warn them good luck with the ghost. The new owners laugh it off, insisting they’re not children, but when the star of their ... read more

Pros: Exceptionally moody sets and props; Lon Chaney's striking makeup and portrayal
Cons: Exaggerated, costume-drama elements, with an uninteresting hero and heroine

Summary: Lon Chaney’s Phantom haunts the backstage of the Paris Opera as if diffused into its shadows, and his presence lingers throughout Universal’s 1925 silent film when he is nowhere to be seen. Below the stage trapdoor, behind the mirrored panels, ... read more

  • Classic film, marred transfer

Pros: Inclusion of the original little-seen 1925 release. Brilliant extras for the 1929 reissue.
Cons: Restored 1929 version made unwatchable by continuous motion blur and slow speed/low pitch

Summary: I am referring to the Milestone 2-disc Ultimate Edition of the Lon Chaney 1925/29 film, "The Phantom of the Opera," as reflected by the accompanying photo. This is the earliest, and still the best, version of the much-filmed story, initially released ... read more
