Do not buy this TV
by eskerson ,Nov 08 '06
Pros: Price and brand history Cons: Poor quality
Do not buy this TV!
I have bought several Magnavox TV's over the past 25 years .. it has been a favorite brand and one that I trusted.
I bought this one in July, 2006 .. the sound started cutting out immediately, then the picture completely went out in September. Since it was still under the manufacturer's warranty I contacted Magnavox.
After several calls and talking to different people they referred me to a local service shop. The repairman identified the part that needed to be replaced, but Magnavox said the pert wouldn't be available until December.
The repair shop gave me a number for Philips Consumer Services. After several calls to them they finally agreed to replace the TV.
The new TV is acting just like the other one. The sound suddenly goes silent. But when you switch to another channel and return the sound is restored. I had to do this six times last night during a 2 hour movie.
If the picture goes out or the sound gets worse it will end up in the dumpster. I will not deal with Magnavox or Philips again.

Love is too weak a word
by parkerbink ,Jan 14 '07
Pros: great picture good sound great end of life price Cons: remote & setup menu not so good
I have had this set (Magnavox 32MF231D 37)for two months. It has an amazing picture the hd tuner works great over the air (used for two days while waiting for my aweful Cox hd dvr (man I miss my TIVO!) but I do not have southern exposure where I moved but I digress,
I updated the firmware and am getting 1080i through the HDMI connection which seems odd as the specs say it is not 1080i but I am not complaining.
I am sorry the other reviewers had a problem but I love mine.

So far a winner
by vudash ,Oct 28 '07
Pros: Price. Built in QAM tuner. Software upgradable. Cons: Discontinued model. Factory PRE-sets not to useful. "May" have an electronic odor problem?
I believe this model has been discontinued and that the Magnavox name has been licensed to a Chinese manufacturer and is no longer affiliated with Phillips. That said...
I purchased this 3 days ago as an "open box" for $489. I am using it as a monitor for my PC at present, and am happy with both the video and audio.
I had trouble getting the brightness up enough, but found my video card's software was limiting contrast and brightness levels to 50%. Now the picture is bright and clear using component inputs at 720p resolution.
Will order a DVI to HDMI converter cable or will get a vid card that outputs HDMI natively to run at 1080i. As the set ONLY includes the power cord.
While the set has 6 different display formats (4:3, 14:9, 16:9, etc.) you only get "Auto" or "Widescreen" with HD output.
An earlier reviewer mentioned a persistant "electronic odor", I am also smelling this but it seems to be fading.

Magnavox 32MF231D 32" LCD TV - FANTASTIC
by duraflex ,Jun 27 '06
Pros: Great HD and SD on the same set Cons: Picture must be adjusted manually. Do it once and it's locked in.
Philips owns Magnavox.
We bought the Magnavox 32MF231D LCD-TV 3 days ago and it is INCREDIBLY GOOD. Great quality at a good price point - about $1000.
DVDs play back beautifully - especially using component inputs.
You want and expect HDTV to be awesome and it is - truly as good as any 32" other HDTV in any technology.
The built-in ATSC/QAM and NTSC tuners make this a set a winner. You can get free over-the-air HDTV signals with a good quality antenna if you are in the right location.
Negatives -
The remote is not intuitive.
Video presets are worthless.
--------------------
UPDATE:
UNFORTUNATELY - As good as this set was, I had to return it. It had a persistent electronic odor that did not go away with time. My individual set may simply have been an isolated lemon. I don't know.
I bought the upgrade version which is the Philips 32PF7321 as a replacement for about $200 more. The Philips has no smell, runs cooler and delivers better sound. The SD images on the Philips and Magnavox are unmatched by other LCD TVs. Three months with the Philips and enjoying it every day.
