Pros: Price, connectivity, HDMI and upconversion, features, PAL/NTSC, computer video playback, USB Cons: LCD and remote could be better there are better choices for straight DVD playback
I have been using the Philips DVP642 DVD player and it excelled at playing DivX, PAL, AVI and MPEG. But the remote control was horrible and the picture quality while playing store-bought DVDs was not the best. So I got the new and improved version - ...
Pros: HDMI Image, remote Cons: Too many bugs and defects as stated in the review.
I must say that in the past I have been using a lot of Philips products from Electronics to Sonicare to most of my Kitchen Small Appliances and have been very happy with them ... until the past few years. The latest unit I have purchased is the DVP5900 ...
Pros: Great HDTV picture Cons: Analog audio output muted for DTS soundtracks
The rumor that the new Philips DVP5960 has corrected the bugs that plagued the Philips DVP5900 upscaling DVD player appears to be true! Also, the DVP5960 produces a much better picture than the DVP5900. The DVP5960 is "DivX Ultra" certified. I've tried ...
Pros: Plays virtually any format, looks nice, cheaper than other HDMI players. Cons: Some controls are a major inconvenience
I wholeheartedly agree with all the reviewers who prasied this player for multi-format playback, USB port, HDMI output and all of it for around $ 70. Impressive. On top of that, this unit has PAL to NTSC converter, and it is very easy to change region ...
Pros: Short height but standard length, light, cheap, and looks great! Cons: Poor remote and very slow load and power up.
If you're in the market for an upconvert DVD player, this is certainly an option. Made by Philips, this DVD player is adequate for most tasks, but falls short in living up to the Philips brand name. I'm not sure the magic behind upconverting to make ...
Pros: Fine vanilla DVD player, handles scratched discs OK Cons: Xvid support terrible, mp3s must all be in one folder
I needed a basic replacement for my Panasonic DVD player which developed a bad spindle motor. I have a plain old analog TV, so I care naught for HDTV, HDMI, upconversion. My primary requirement was for good handling of scratched discs (I visit the ...
Pros: It still plays dvds, USB port. Cons: Very slow operation. The picture isn't true HD (don't fall for it). No eject.
I've bought this unit during the holiday season of 2006, and just had to bring my problems public. I picked this one up at the local Circuit City before they closed down every store in the United States. The Philips player is an okay player; it's surley ...
Pros: Reliable. The USB port is a killer feature. Cheap! Cons: Cheap! Very light. AWFUL remote.
As a DVD player, this unit doesn't excel. It has a small and finicky remote, slow navigation and loading, is intolerant of scratches and a terrible remote. I mention the remote twice because it really is bad. There's only a small window in which it works ...
Pros: Plays DivX-, most XviD-encoded AVIs.
HDMI with video upscaling. Cons: HDMI and coaxial digital audio out DO NOT work together.
The DVP 5900 is definitely an upgrade to the older DVP 642, by virtue of the HDMI interface and through it the ability to upscale DVDs to 720p and 1080i. But as HDMI and upscaling is this model's big selling point, it is also its biggest stumbling block. ...
Pros: I got to watch one DVD before the unit broke! WOW! Cons: I got to watch one DVD before the unit broke! WOW!
I purchased this unit to replace a Sony unit. I also purchased the Philips 19" LCD HDTV with HDMI. I set up the TV and DVP and what a great picture. I went to open the tray and nothing would happen. I could hear the motor running but nothing would ...
Pros: Great video quality, HDMI output, USB port, WMA support, Divx Ultra support, CD upsampling Cons: USB port is 1.1, no S-video output, warranty is only 90 days
If you already own the Philips DVP642 you will notice a dramatic upgrade in picture quality with this one. The DVP642 had a 10-bit 54 MHz video processor. This one has a 12-bit 108 MHz processor. I didn't notice a difference in video quality when ...
Pros: Good picture, plays DivX Ultra movies Cons: USB only 1.1, short file names
There are a lot of players now that output 1080i. Some even support DivX. But what makes this player different is the USB port. Unfortunately, it's not very useful. The picture quality is good. It does output HDMI, component, and composite ...
Great Quality, Easy to Use by ricardo719 ,Nov 07 '06
Pros: Sleek design, well-designed and laid out remote, great viewing features. Cons: No backlight on remote; no frame advance mode.
I purchased this product to enhance viewing DVDs on my new LCD HiDef television. At first I didn't understand that I wouldn't get a high-definition experience with the player and its included cables. I was disappointed that the picture displayed much smaller than the full-screen of the television. Once I got into the menus and discovered the display options, and set it to 16x9, I got a full picture. Adding an HDMI cable improved the quality immensely. The remote is well laid out, but not backlit. The menus are easy to follow. I love the controls allowing forward AND reverse viewing, in variable faster and slower speeds. I wish it had a frame advance, that's the one thing I truly miss. The zoom feature works very well, zooming larger as well as smaller, and also allows picture panning in the larger modes. The price on this unit was very reasonable and has made my first venture into the HiDef arena an absolute joy. Explore the menu settings to get the most from this player. It has variable resolution, picture display (vivid, cool, personalized), crispness, and so much more.
Pros: it does what it claims to do Cons: very bad customer support
I bought this unit 2 months ago... suddently, the remote stopped working ... i called the customer support and their reply was that there is no solution to this problem .. however, they suggested to call them back in COUPLE OF MONTHS to check if there will be an available remote that they can send to replace my damaged remote!!
the real problem is that the unit's front panel does not have enough controls to run the DVDs .. for examplle, it does not have a forward/reverse controls .. therefore, i cannot watch almost any movie now on this unit!!
my suggestion: either you do not buy this unit.. or you buy it with an extended warranty from your local retailer!
PS. I give this unit a rating of 1 because it is absolutely useless now after the remote is broken!
Pros: Plays divx and vcds Cons: Weird remote and bad quality cables
This dvd player is the good for its price. It plays dvds, cds, vcds, and divx. The look of the player is very stylish and nice. The remote control is sort of fat and programed weirdly. The remote doesn't bother me, but I still think about what they were thinking when they decided to stray from the normal functions. The quality of the picture is not good. It is not grainy but there are times when you can see these white lines and stuff. I am guessing this might be due to the cable. All these electronics these days comes with cheap cables and force us to buy the good cables for some better quality. What a rip.. Overall, having a divx player is sweet.
