No need to fly to Cambodia to get Riel, or real! by macwain ,Jan 11 '05
Pros: The freshest of flavors. Milder than Thai and more refined than Vietnamese food. Cons: Long line after about 6:15. Reservations only for 4 or more.
My wife is from Cambodia, and after our firstborn was allowed to leave the hospital, we went to the Phnom Penh House in Oakland before we went home!
Cambodian peoples have a habit of shopping for everything fresh every day because in Cambodia, almost no one has a refrigerator. The habit lives on for the cooking staff at this restaurant.
The seafood soup with pineapple is really wonderful, and the flavor of the green lip mussel appetizer is striking. We go often, and it puts a twinkle in my wife's eye when I tell her we are going for dinner.
The service is outstanding, and somehow amidst the very busy staff, they can find time to talk and help sort out the menu for the newcomers. Arrive before 6 and the wait is usually very short.
