Pros: Strong metal tip, fat barrel design, inexpensive, disposable. Cons: Hard to control ink flow at times, can be messy for new users.
When I first purchased the Pilot Varsity I didnt know that it was a fountain pen. Either I didnt read the package correctly or I grabbed the wrong one off the peg. When I cracked this open the first time I was a bit puzzled with the ...

Pilot Varsity
by blackgto ,Dec 29 '04
Pros: Cheap, excellent ink flow, and clear ink reservoir Cons: Hard to come across and only seems to come in medium nib size
I've been looking at fountain pens for a while lately and in my search I came upon the Pilot Varsity Disposable Fountain Pens. This pen is by far one of the best disposable pens I ever wrote with. I have lots of expensive fountain pens and the Pilot Varsity can rival every single one of them. I first purchased my Pilot Varsity from the Fountain Pen Hospital near City Hall and I couldn't believe how smooth it wrote, seeing how its only a disposable pens. Now I can't leave the house without one in my pocket and what I love most about this pen is its cheap.

A truly awesome thing
by subrot0 ,Feb 06 '07
Pros: Its an awesome writing instrument. Cons: Kinda pricey but still worth it.
This is truly a fantastic thing. I love pens, but I seldom use them. Some of them are expensive, some them are broken and they run out of ink.
But I love holding them and writing with them. The Varsity disposable pen is a gem. It lets you write and write and if you lose it, its replaceable. Its not that expensive. Well its more expensive than a ball point pen. But it is just plain more fun using a pen.
I grew up with a pen and this is a great pen. You can introduce other to what a pen was. My co-workers use pens now because I introduced them to a Varsity pen.
Use it and you will like it. The purple color is really cool.

A smooth writer and a great pen!
by cottersay ,Nov 24 '06
Pros: Smooth, low cost, reliable, does not skip Cons: None
I use fountain pens everyday, so I know what I am talking about: This is a great fountain pen for everyday writing -- one that you will not care gets lost or damaged due to its very low price (unlike the average (non limited edition) fountain pens, which can cost over $100 -- and sometimes much more). The Pilot Varsity pen lays down a great fine-to-medium line of ink, and the nib (IE: the writing tip) does not dry out too fast when left uncapped -- and the pen seems to write forever with its large internal ink reservoir. Fantastic buy; and with no muss-'n-fuss of having to refill the pen either! (Never had one leak, but plane travel or large pressure changes can cause this to occur in any fountain pen that is not completely *full* of ink).

Pilot Varsity
by chonker ,Feb 26 '06
Pros: cheap, usually works great, fun to use Cons: ink leaks at times
I liked to Varsity as an inexpensive fountain pen (since I invariably lose my pens over time to pen gremlins), but am looking for other brands due to the pen's occasional habit of 'exploding' in my hands, with ink coming out of the hole in the side opposite the nib. It may be related to the fact that I commute up a mountain every day, the pressure change may be too much for it. Other than that, I like the pen.
