My favorite toy

by rquad , Jun 22 '05
Pros: Easy to use, saves time
Cons: Cheap wheels and handle, non-standard blade
First, let me say that I'm sitting here scratching my head over the negative review for this product that precedes mine, and for the bad reviews of its apparent sister product branded as the Poulan/Weedeater 952. I'm in my second season with this tool, ...

Works very nicely but doesn't look heavy-duty

by soilman , Aug 22 '05
Pros: Works well. Well made. Light.
Cons: Light duty. Kicks up huge amounts of dirt.
I have the PE550 type 3. At $150 plus shipping and tax it is not the least expensive sidewalk edger that I've seen, but is very near to it. There seem to be 3 basic types of edgers: (1) heavy duty models with about 3.5 horsepower engines, usually Briggs ...

Weed Eater PE550 Gas Edger is Junk

by wantquality , Feb 12 '06
Pros: Light weight
Cons: Expensive, must mix gas, hard to start, won't stay running, throws debris too far.
We needed an edger to edge approximately 100 feet of sidewalk and driveway. We didn't want a full size edger for that small amount of work and I didn't want to use a string trimmer. The Weed Eater 22cc PE550 looked like the perfect fit. We paid $159.00 ...

Quality Control Is Just Not There

by af21115 , Jun 13 '08
Pros: Compact, Lightweight, Easy On Gas, Edges Well
Cons: Not for heavy use. Has issues too soon. Now overpriced.
I know the review reviewers are not going to like this format, but I have a story to tell so they're just going to have to bear with me. Also, if your going to review my review but give it a Somewhat Helpful or Not Helpful, you are one of the clueless ...

Run. Don't walk away from this piece of junk!

by friscosooner , May 30 '05
Pros: None. It is a total piece of junk
Cons: Too many to list!
I bought the Weed Eater brand of this product and have had nothing but constant trouble with it. It is poorly built and poorly designed. The troubles I have had are: 1. I currently cannot get the unit to turn off. I have to manually disconnect the ...

PE550 - Nothing But Problems

by dgbeerco , Sep 12 '07
Pros: Low price, light weight, and easy handling.
Cons: Cheap construction and hard to start.
I'm on my second year of owning the Weed Eater PE550 and I wish I had never bought it after the problems I have encountered as listed below. I returned the first one within 30 days due to its failure to start. They sent it in for repair, but somehow ...

Very good option instead of electric

by pickybastard , May 15 '07
Pros: Lightweight, easy to use, inexpensive, no belts
Cons: 2 cycle engines can be temperamental, not as powerful as a $600 model (duh)
I have the WeedEater version of this item and it's going on it's 3rd season. I've had electrics and heavy duty commercial edgers for a lawn business and I have to say this little guy fits my home needs just perfect. It's definitely not a commercial ...

Just Ordered My Second PE550
by blind1954 ,Jul 04 '05
Pros: Durability over 12 years is proof enough for me.
Cons: None. Easy start every time and good cutting.
Bought my first PE550 in 1993... 12 years of faithful service. No problems and easy starting, easy use every year. Changing the blades (sometimes hard to find) is a snap. Even the wife can use it. My weedeater weedwhacker is also 12 years old. Just use premium gas and oil, clean the air filter and that's all the maintenance there is. I had to order the PE500 through Walmart... the PE550 was difficult to find on the shelf here in Oklahoma City.

Great product!
by cuttinggrass4u ,Oct 09 '05
Pros: VERY lightweight.
Cons: About $150.00
I bought one of these to use in my yard service business. Sure beats edging with a string trimmer. Works great. I've read the other bad reviews, and am convince that these are isolated troubles. The blades are narrow and ware fast, but then again I'm doing 5 yards a day. Blades are about $14 for a 2-pack. For the home owner: Go get one! They do a great job, and are easy to use

Weed Eater PE550 Gas Edger
by ronfcar ,Sep 08 '06
Pros: Compact, lightweight, easy storage, easy starting and running
Cons: Flimsy handle, slightly underpowered, hard to use away from sidewalks and driveways
I have used this edger for a few months and it is overall an acceptable machine. As with other edgers this one cuts better going backward than it does forward. Scatters cuttings and mud too widely. Engine running seems to be the best feature.

Good for about 50' then throw it out!
by lenniea ,Apr 30 '07
Pros: Liked it's light weight when it worked.
Cons: Can't believe the cheapness of the manufacturing.
I bought the PE-550 to trim up a 100' frontage. It worked pretty well the first year. The second year I noticed the muffler had broken off and it had become far too loud to use. I bought and replaced the muffler over the winter and thought I was ready for the next, or second season. Well that ended at around the 75' mark. It shook and vibrated so badly I stopped it in fear it was going to blow up! On opening it up I couldn't believe it, but I actually found the crankcase had broken loose. Cracked all around it's support housing. I have never seen such a piece of crap before. This is the first time ever, and I've had a lot of experience with gas and diesel engines, that I've seen plastic used as an integral part of an engine. Naturally, I'll never buy another product from this brand again.

Great product - very fast
by jimfolts ,Jun 12 '08
Pros: Fast, light, quick starting
Cons: Screws holding the blade gear box loosen and need to be checked.
Have nearly 1000 feet of edging to do every week. With this unit I can do it in about one half hour. Have been using it for two years.

Cheap Craftsmanship and Design
by revbol ,Jun 16 '07
Pros: Disposable???
Cons: Breaks down quickly and often; cheap parts; blade hangs on "tough" roots; overpriced at retail
Says "anti-vibration" but vibrates worse than just about any edger I've used; goes dead all the time

Gas tank cracked after one season; ordered a new one and spent an hour or so replacing it. After using for one tank of gas on the same day, the pull cord stopped working. I opened the case and saw that a plastic ring was now cracked. I just chunked the entire thing into the trash can.

I'm not sure about other Poulan/Weedeater (one and the same) products, but all I have seen in the stores since this purchase seem to consist of similar cheap plastic parts.

Personally, I'll be avoiding those products in the future; and for those of you who share that perception...

Beware: some Craftsman products are slightly altered Poulan products.

The Weed Eater Gas Edger is a winner ....
by todafamily ,Jul 25 '05
Pros: Easy to use, and SAFE ... Gear Driven Blade, built in clutch is wonderful.
Cons: Won't whiz through the first spring cuts, but GREAT for every week end use.
I've just spent 3 hours trying to find a replacement for my model GE21 Weed Eater Edger which I purchased in 1991 in Virginia. Over the years it served me well ... through Connecticut, and now here in Oregon. After dozens of replacement blades, it finally died today. The engine froze up. I'm truly amazed it lasted this long. It ALWAYS started, and I NEVER had it in the shop for any kind of maintenance ... other than replacing the blades. The PE550 looks identical, so first thing tomorrow I'm going to WALMART to purchase the machine. If it is not available, I'm going to purchase it on line. I've read some of the negative stuff about the machine, but I believe that in life there is always variance. In my case, I'm at the other end of the spectrum. Thank you Weed Eater !

Great Little Edger
by lkissell ,May 19 '08
Pros: Light weight, easy to start, reliable and long-lasting.
Cons: None.
I have owned my PE550 for almost ten years. I use it for my house and two rental properties and it's still running strong!

Unlike some of the other reviewers, my edger is very easy to start and it always runs reliably. It has lasted much longer than I expected given the amount of use it gets and its relatively light weight.
