Pros: Numerous examples and anecdotes; Can be read in one sitting Cons: Can be repetitive; Same theme throughout; Some examples questionable
Seth Godin outlines a simple strategy for people to excel in Purple Cow. The title is derived from his realization that he went from amazement to boredom watching cows by the side of the world. As he continued to gaze at the cows, the more boring they...
The books that come to sit on my desk as "desk references" are those that address a business issue, but yet also have an impact on how I conduct myself personally. Purple Cow is one of those books. I haven't added a book to this "desk reference"...

Pros: Solid theories, great self-analysis questions throughout Cons: Lots of opinion, not much data
This is, by far, the best advice book for Marketers that has been put on the street for these times. What Godin provides here is both evidence of the changing advertising and marketing landscape as well as some advise in moving into the next level of marketing. 'Purple Cow' is his example... you see a lot of cows, but what if you saw a purple cow?
Once upon a time, there were newspapers and broadcast television. Now, there is the internet, broadcast television, cable, digital video recorders, outdoor advertising, word of mouth, email marketing, newspaper, direct mail, magazines, etc., etc. You are probably suffering with the rest of marketers on how to 'sell your stuff'.
The book is a quick read. Most folks don't realize it, but the first edition was delivered in a purple spotted milk carton and had multiple copies... very clever.
This book is not a 'How to Market' book. Moreover, it's a resource you can use to begin to think out of the box while not risking your marketing dollar. As Seth puts it, 'Safe is Risky'.
Pros: Easy to read, interesting Cons: Somewhat repetitive
Written by marketing pro Seth Godin, Purple Cow is a great book for anyone interested in improving business or marketing skills. Godin discusses several companies that have become sucessful in business to day by standing out and making their product different from the rest. These companies are used as examples throughout the book, and each section discusses one major point or step to making your business a success. My favorite part of the book is the "takeaway" pionts given by Godin at the end of almost every section. This book is a great tool to help those involved in business and marketing begin to stand out and be successful.
