We've been given at least two copies of this book. The first time I read it to my daughter, it sickened me to think that this is a lesson I'm supposed to be teaching my children. Since then, if I read this book at all I tend to reword it quite a bit....
Pros: Embossed Foil Scales are interesting Novelty.
Some sea creatures (Octopus) are nicely rendered. Cons: Teaches kids to bow to peer pressure.
Teaches kids you can buy your friends.
And I thought my wife and I were the only ones disturbed by the message! My boys seem drawn to the book by the illustrations and it is a frequent pick. We usually have to tell them we don't agree with the message. Why should the Rainbow fish be shunned...
