  • Portsmouth, Virginia Marriott Renaissance Hotel: very grand public spaces, expensive, good for conferences

Pros: Every guest room has a breathtaking waterfront/harbor view of Elizabeth River. Architecturally: unforgetably monumental.
Cons: Expensive lodging, food. $10/day parking. Very hard guest room floors (for exercising). Understaffed dining room

Summary: NOTE on amended review: I wrote this update today, Monday, two days after the original. I am back home in Black Mountain, North Carolina. I have changed little, corrected typos and initially misrepresented facts (e.g. elevators reduced from four ... read more

Pros: Excellent mattress and bedding; river views; friendly staff
Cons: Humid rooms; dirty carpet; bad food

Summary: In late June, I spent nine nights at the Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth, Virginia while attending a conference. The hotel looks nice on the surface, but in most respects, it was disappointing or worse. Despite a few nice features, I would not ... read more

Pros: Directly on the river, inviting rooms, pleasant, airy public spaces
Cons: The service still has a few kinks to be resolved

Summary: I watched them build this hotel from a bare patch of dirt to a striking new focal point for Portsmouth's restored Olde Towne historic district. Each day, I would peer out from my 14th floor balcony next door to see it progress from raw steel to ... read more

    Pros: Friendly staff.
Cons: Expensive, no VCR, there was a desk but no table, location, substandard food.

Summary: This overpriced behemoth is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. I stayed here for a conference, paid for by the Navy, so luckily I didn't have to pay for this trip. 1) The food was terrible and expensive. 2) There was no refrigerator and microwave.
