I may not be a thoroughly experienced reader in contemporary literature (later 20th Century ), nor a chronic novel aficionado of author Wolfe`s product but having some personal and professional affiliation in the on going industry of space...

Pros: Lots of information, sprinkled with entertaining anecdotes.
Cons: Neither a good history, nor a good drama. Lacks identity.

Although critically acclaimed, the film version of "The Right Stuff" never made it big at the box office. It suffered from being too long for the public's notoriously short attention span, and also had the misfortune of being <shudder>...

Pros: good historic informations.
Cons: too many characters, and never stay on one main character.

Personally I like the historic informations and the feeling and thoughts of the astronauts and others like Chuck Yeager. Tom Wolfe is a good author but the big mistake that I think he commited is not sticking with one character. It jumps from one to...
