I recommend this product
by alanclrk ,Jul 28 '08
Pros: Inexpensive and utilitarian Cons: Instructions and recipes are on the skimpy side
I have made 3 batches of ice cream and while a learning process, each was a basically success. If too much ice is used particularly at the beginning it will not run. Freeing it by turning by hand worked or just turning it on and off.
I bought it to make sugar/fat free ice cream (milk) and am happy with this simple but also inexpensive machine.
PS I like the recipe out of Joy of Cooking because it call for heating the milk/egg mixture and cooking the egg appeals to me.

Will return it
by hiemstrales ,Jun 15 '07
Pros: Could make a large batch of ice cream Cons: Messy, motor malfunction after 2 minutes of first use
Just tried out our new Rival 6 qt ice cream maker. After all the work of getting the ingredients ready, adding the ice and rock salt around the can as it turned, the thing turned for all of about 2-3 minutes and then it made a sound like it was jammed and quit. I unjammed any ice that made it difficult for me to turn the can and tried again. Now the motor makes a different noise, just a slight humming - the motor must be very fragile if it managed to break after one ice jam! It can't even turn the can at all now. Will return the thing and will not be buying another.

I LOVED THIS!
by iamavasmom ,Jul 09 '07
Pros: Easy to use, delicious! Cons: None
My 5-year old daughter and I just made coconut ice cream in this ice cream maker and it was so easy, she could do it! The ice cream is delicious! We followed the directions exactly and had no problem -- we are already excitedly talking about new recipes and having friends over to enjoy the incredible, rich flavor!

Don't Buy
by jandtsmom ,May 26 '07
Pros: none Cons: jammed continuously
After only the second time trying to use this, it jammed continuously! Making it a REAL PAIN to try to use! It is also hard to use because of it's size, bulky and hard to get the ice cream, from the bottom scraped out. It did not make creamy ice cream either, it was gritty. It was a real headache. I will be returning this. Junk.

Don't Waste Your Time or Money!
by sheilaann ,Apr 23 '08
Pros: Included Recipes, the claim of making 6 quarts of ice cream, the price (about $27.00). Cons: Rival's machine does not have the power to turn the canister against ANY resistance!
I bought the Rival Ice Cream Maker because of it's size and price. However, after I prepared the almost 6 quarts of liquid needed to make the ice cream, followed the given directions regarding the order of assembly and the proper layering of fine ice to rock salt, it stopped working. After only seven minutes and less than three layers of ice and salt, the machine stalled. I read that if this were to happen, I should rotate the canister and if that didn't work (and it didn't), I should add a small amount of water. The water trick worked...for a minute. After trying to manually rotate the canister to no avail, I then added enough water to float the ice. Nothing. So, I am left with 6 quarts of liquid sugar and no way to make ice cream. I wasted my money and time not only on this machine, but the ingredients as well. I just hope Rival's return policy is better than their 8806-BL Ice Cream Maker!

This model is junk from China
by cookielady4 ,Jun 10 '09
Pros: Pretty box,use of Rival name brand, and tall canister for ice cream mix Cons: Poor design, cheap materials bucket looks just like my trashcan next to my desk,
I bought this model from Walmart this last weekend for a surprise cookout for my sister and her kids. She had mentioned she would like to have some homemade ice cream. Thinking when I bought it the last Rival that I had was really good and I wore it out finally and had not replaced it. After mixing the ingredients, we put in the container into the bucket with the ice and salt. I just wish that I had taken the time to check other reviews of this product before buying it, because it just jammed up time after time, and even a few times we had to take out all the ice and salt and re-add back to the bucket. The bucket is too narrow and the plastic worm gear that drives the motor is a poor design to this product. The motor can jump out of its locked position when it jams up the container. I will be taking this ice cream freezer back to wal-mart for a refund, and watching for an older "MADE IN THE USA", before I will ever buy another made in China again.
