STIHL is still the best in the business!

by gjacks Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Aug 23 '00
Pros: light weight, comfortable to hold, starts on first pull, safety features
Cons: Doesn't make a very wide cut
My father owns two different STIHL chainsaws. He owns this one and a larger one. I have used both of them on many occasions to cut firewood during the winter.

This particular chain saw, the STIHL Mid-sized 029 is one of the best I have ever...

Good saw for moderate volume sawing

by rpoythress , Mar 14 '07
Pros: Easy to use controls, dependable starting and plenty of power.
Cons: Would prefer a slightly heavier duty chain. Have to sharpen regularly.
I bought this saw after moving to 10 acres, thinking I would use it every now and then to clear some limbs or occasionally cut some fire wood. I have used it much more than originally anticipated and am overall happy with its performance. In ...

nothing but the best

by wallace1234 , Oct 16 '00
Pros: the whole thing
Cons: it's raw power could be dangerous

The Stihl 029 Super Farm Boss is a firewood cutter's chainsaw. Size wise it falls between the large professional logger's saws and compact homeowner models. Although big enough to easily fell all but the largest of northern hardwoods and light...

Saw

by FuFu , Feb 25 '00
Pros: Best Saw
Cons: None
It really wasn't until I started the research for this opinion that I was sure I made a good choice. I discovered that Andreas Stihl, the father of chainsaws, made the first saw of this type in 1926 in Germany. Since then his company has continued to...

Stihl 029/MS290 OK, but too heavy

by opel73 , Jan 31 '06
Pros: Power, price, reliability
Cons: weight, power concerns versus pro saws.
I sold Stihl equipment for 10 years and still service Stihl equipment on a regular basis, so this reveiw cover more than just looks and price. The 029 was introduced in 1991 as a mid size farm/casual user saw, and quickly became a big seller. The saw ...

Stihl Farm Boss 029

by rnickolett , Oct 07 '02
Pros: Reliable, powerful, best chainsaw I have ever owned or used. Case is nice too.
Cons: Slightly heavy - just takes a while to get used to.
This chainsaw is great. I have used other saws (Poulan, Craftsman, Homelite, McCullough) and have never owned or used a saw that was more reliable or more powerful than this saw. It starts on the first or second pull every time. Everything is easy to...

Stihl MS290 Farm Boss

by zerotsm , Aug 21 '05
Pros: Cuts wood like a hot knife through butter!
Cons: Only 5 year service life.
I had my Stihl MS290 Farm Boss (similar to the Stihl 029) for five trouble free years, then everything went bad at once. I bought the Farm Boss based on comments on misc.rural. The saw was much easier to start than the "Eager Beaver" it replaced. A ...

Woodlot Mastery

by gpotter , Oct 10 '00
Pros: light weight, well balanced, reliable
Cons: no one else to run it
This saw is a woodlot master. The process of tree identification, cutting, hauling, storing and loading into your heating unit is hard work. Each year a forester takes a 10 acre plot and identifies those trees that are diseased, over mature or crowded...

The Farm Boss

by Jeremy_Gentry , Aug 20 '00
Pros: Power and versatility
Cons: A little heavy, but not bad.
I've used the Stihl 029 for about 4 years now. I used it extensively, clearing land, cutting firewood, and even cutting 4x4 posts in some construction. It is a really versatile chain saw.

I've used several other chain saws some bigger...

Great Firewood Saw!

by chrlwlkr , Apr 20 '01
Pros: Reasonable price, good power, many safety features
Cons: A little bulky
I have been employed as a hardware store owner/manager for the last 25 years. All of those years have been spent as a Stihl dealer, technician, and user. I can say without reservation that if it says "Stihl," buy it! The 029 is the ultimate firewood...

Eat your wheaties!

by rcattaway , Dec 28 '01
Pros: Powerful, dependable, durable, great design
Cons: Heavy. Stay away from the "low kickback" chains
There is no question that this is a great saw. I've had mine for three years and cut a lot of wood and it looks and runs like new. A mccullough or poulan would have been ready for the city dump by now. Before you buy this saw though, consider it's...

Great Mid-Size Saw

by dsazama , Nov 22 '00
Pros: Great mid size saw
Cons: You don't want to cut a bunch of really big trees with this saw
I'm a home builder in Kentucky and do my own land clearing. I've used the 029 super for three years now and it has never been to the shop once. I own a larger Husky for when I have to tackle some real big trees but 90% of the time I use the 029.
