by logimom Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Feb 01 '04

Safety 1st Multi-Purpose Appliance Latch - Means Keep Out!

by LisaDo Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Jun 29 '07
Pros: Inexpensive, it works!
Cons: Adhesive could come off, might be hard to remove after time.
Our first experience with the Safety 1st Multi-Purpose Appliance Latch was actually on someone else's dime. There was one on the refrigerator when we moved into our apartment. I have never really thought about them before. Zacky was pretty good ...

No more ice cream for junior

by jill_a , Mar 11 '07
Pros: Keeps food cold and kids safe.
Cons: Possibly difficult removal, but since I haven't taken it off yet, I don't know.
What is it about little boys that makes them want to open and close every door they see over and over again? My little boy is obsessed with opening our fridge and slamming it shut. It drives me insane, but worse than the fact that my milk is spoiling ...

No more "Don't touch that!"

by mommy_quigg , Mar 11 '07
Pros: Easy to install, easy to use, WORKS!
Cons: None.
We purchased these for use at work, since the kitchen is open the the rest of the room, and accessible to my 23 month old son and 17 month old nephew. We first purchased these for the fridge, then immediately went out and purchased 3 more, one for the ...

Works on some, not on others

by kwcheeky , May 02 '09
Pros: Cheap, easy for adults to open
Cons: You might need 2 straps on large doors or drawers
I have two curious little boys who like to open and close things repeatedly.  Fine for drawers and cupboards, but not so good when it's the fridge, washing machine, or oven.  I purchased several Safety 1st Multi Purpose Appliance Latches and ...

Useless - adhesive lasted about 1 week

by metro_mom , Feb 17 '08
Pros: Can be used virtually on anything with a door and a nearby surface
Cons: Adhesive only lasts about a week
I purchased this lock to use on our dishwasher. Our 2 year old and 3 year old were obsessed with the dishwasher. They had even slightly bent the door after opening it one day and both standing on it. So off to Home Depot I went for something to ...

Surprisingly Sturdy and Inexpensive!

by abiwork , Feb 23 '04
Pros: Seems strong, very inexpensive.
Cons: None yet!
My son has been obsessed with our dishwasher for quite sometime. Over the past month, though, he has been increasingly nosey and grabby! (Just like all toddlers!) He can't open the refrigerator or oven...yet...but the dishwasher is easy pickings! ...

by melissabear , Mar 26 '07
Pros: works until they figure out how to use it
Cons: button takes awhile to loosen up
When my son started to open the fridge we didn't mind, when he started sneaking entire packages of cheese, it was time to do something. We came across the Safety 1st Appliance latch and just by looking at it in the package we could not figure out how ...

New product...New way of opening it up

by lustb255 , May 27 '03
Pros: Keeps the little ones out!!
Cons: Toddlers can still get in!
I purchased this contraption in the hopes of keeping my 3 year old daughter out of the Refridgerater. Well It did not work. She is now a pro at getting it open. As for the younger children. It does keep my two year old out of the fridge. So I would...

We wasted $6 on these things.

by kensbev , Mar 10 '08
Pros: Adheres for at least a day, in my case.
Cons: A 3 year old can pull it off. In a day.
My husband and I recently had to replace the lock on our fridge (a different type, and I desperately wish I could remember what brand). It held up for about a year, so we weren't too upset about it. This lock is the only type of appliance lock for sell ...

Useless, a waste of money
by dewhistle ,Jul 08 '04
Pros: Works perfectly, if you can keep it out of reach.
Cons: Won't last a week in a child's reach.
We have tried several of these, which in my estimation is exactly how they're designed: for high turn-over, even to be disposable. The soft portion of the strap peels away from its own adhesive quicker than anything, with just a pull from the side, so you're left with a lock that holds and a dangling strap that does nothing. And you can never go back after that. The kid has the solution. It's over. Our son was less than one and a half years old when he bested this one without even trying, because the grab at the side of the strap is natural motion of any toddler yanking ineffectually at a barrier.

Now, this does mean that if it is out of reach, you may have a wonderful strap. It's not very long, but that can be perfect. We have one at the top of our freezer door. Just put it there, but I admit, it will probably solve the problem.

Many uses.
by jacintx ,Feb 28 '04
Pros: Can use on many different items, easy to use.
Cons: Smells very strongly.
We used these on our filing cabinets which were heavy and would slide closed with a lot of force. Our son never figured them out and the latch was simple to operate. It bonded easily and firmly to the surfaces of the cabinet. One melamine and one unfinished plywood. My only complaint about these latches is that they smelled very strongly, a sharp 'new' plastic odor that really lingered for months.

Works like a champ!!!
by sdefelice ,Nov 14 '05
Pros: Easy to use; Durable.
Cons: None so far.
I thought my 2 year old would have this ripped apart within days of installation (I even bought a replacement from the get-go), but we're going on three months with no problems! My 4 year old even knows how to shut the lock when she sees it open.

The most compelling reason I purchased a lock was because I was afraid my son might shut himself in the fridge. However, it also has saved me from many, many spilled gallons of milk--a nice bonus.

I'm not sure what other products are on the market, but there is no reason to look further when a $3 device does the job.

Thank you Safety First!
