KSTP TV in ST Paul, MN just did an expose on the the growth of mold in these type beds. Select Comfort replied, on air, that "all beds have mold in them". But looking at the air chamber, the foam pads etc as they displayed them would not be how my bed should be.
Select Comfort's recommendation is to use a clorine solution and wipe it up periodically.
I wish my blowup bed would blow up..for good! by intrspctiv ,Mar 02 '06
Pros: Lightweight, easy to move. Before its unreliability, it seems to improve sleep somewhat. Cons: Terribly expensive for two camping mattresses dressed as one mattress. Very difficult to install. Unreliable.
I have had this tacky blowup mattress for nearly a year now with precious little satisfaction, sleep improvement, pain relief or any benefit whatsoever. When I go to bed at night, there's no telling where the dual settings will be. I can understand--and have come to expect--leakage in the air chambers. But sometimes the chamber readings go up precipitously and result in a mattress that's hard as a rock. Other nights the mattress is like sleeping on full laundry bags. There seems to be no way to predict what the next problem will be. When I first got it, I thought I would benefit from the blowup air bags, but it's turned out to be just another greatly overpriced gimmick.
Pros: Adjustable, #1 pro. Very comfortable, #2 pro. Cons: Haven't found any yet!
I have had back problems for years and was to the point where I just couldn't take it anymore, I would lie in one spot for maximum 30 seconds ( no joke ) and it felt like my lower back was on fire. I've had sciatica for a while now. The 1st night in this bed was a definite improvement, but I was still not sold. Purchased the bed in the mall store to get the 30-day trial. I'm sure I could have gotten it cheaper, but I needed to make sure I liked it. We had kept our old bed ( we got the king-size model ) just in case there were issues. By the 3rd night I told my wife that we should just dump the old bed, there's NO WAY this one's going back! Considering each and every one of us spend a third of our life in bed, it should be comfy. This bed is better than anything I've tried. We did try a topper pad ( not Tempur-Pedic brand ) that helped, but this setup puts it to shame. Well worth the money, I haven't slept this good in years. - Doug
Wonderful bed! Well worth the money! by happywifey ,Jun 27 '06
Pros: Quiet pump, very comfortable! Cons: None
We got ours from the refirbished Select Comfort Store online and paid half and still got the standard 20-year warranty. We love it! The air pump is so quiet, especially compared to the next model down. You can barely hear it at all! This bed is awesome!
We bought a Sleep Number bed about 2 years back. The air chamber has bubbled up and is leaking air. I called Select Comfort, and they are asking me to pay for the replacement mattress and also pay for shipping it. Also they are asking me ship back the defective product at my cost.
The bed frame is also very cheap quality. The components do not interlock properly. The plastic components have jagged and sharp edges. I cut my hand while assembling it.
The air chamber loses air over a period of time. I have to firm it up about once a month.
I am concerned how much more I may have to spend on the matress till I own it. For what I paid, I would expect better customer service.
Pros: Easy to find your sleep number.
Lots of positions and they are useful
Cons: 4 vibrator motors and mattress [NO LABOR under warranty] replaced by 7th month.
We both have bad backs and like different mattresses. We also needed electric bed. Vibration was added feature. It delivered all. My back was better in a week. In addition to mattress, both of us use the adjustments of head and foot a lot. Love the vibrations.
Wonderful Bed ! Hope it lasts for years to come ! by svencharles2 ,Aug 11 '06
Pros: Comfort. Adjustablity. Easy assembly. Found perfect Sleep Number within a few nights. Price (over time). Cons: Could've saved money and built own foundation.
We bought an expensive traditional mattress, and after 5 years it was awful to sleep on. The Select Comfort 5000 bed cost about twice as much as that other mattress; so as long as it lasts more than 10 years, i will say it was worth it for the money.
As far as comfort, this bed is amazing. Yes, it's wierd being able to adjust my bed's firmness, but that's what makes it great! I can make it nice and squishy after a long exercise routine to sleep; or I can make it nice and firm to sit up and read a book. And it's nice to know that this bed will NEVER get that horrible "bowl" affect that my old mattress got after just 5 years ! (But the "bowl" was not deep enough to be covered under warranty - what a rip!)
I'll check back in 10 years and let you know how well this mattress is doing,. So far, so good.
My only advice is maybe to not buy the fondation. You could always build a solid foundation out of wood or something.
Way Overrated! Bought a sleep number bed & have had only sleepless nights. by jujubee89 ,Jul 09 '09
Pros: You can adjust the air chamber level to get varying levels of sinkingness Cons: Mattress cover flimsy & cheap Customer Service is poor
Mattress cover is flimsy & cheap - adjusting the number doesn't make up for this poor quality & hence no sleep benefit achieved!. Tried to purchase a different mattress cover to give it another shot and sleep number won't take your money for components - they want you to purchase a whole new bed - what a waste of $$$$ and you get stuck with all those extra parts. They have no interest in helping customers achieve level of satisfaction with their beds!
Pros: It is adjustable to softness and hardness, light and easy to move. Cons: too expensive, mattress foam and topper will wear out in two years. not a buy
There are two air chambers inside which are covered by a cheap foam, problem is that since the chambers are not square shaped and have space between the two, the section of foam between the two chambers will break causing the middle of bed to sink. I sleep alone and roll in the middle because the far right and left sides are even, like sleeping on a hill at a slope, I guess the problem could be fixed by using one big chamber but then it will be adjustable for only one partner, I was offered that option but declined it, I wish I hadn't. I will go buy a 3 inch memory foam topper to replace it. I am guessing the same problem will happen at the edges of the mattress.
If you want a bed like this, go and get a $100 air bed and throw a nice $100 mattress topper on it. This mattress probably cost about $200 to build which is then sold for $2000. The frame is all plastic. Great marketing and advertising made me buy this mattress.
Sleep Number 5000 by Select Comfort by deosgood ,Aug 28 '08
Pros:
None.
Cons:
Roll to the middle. Bad couple bed.
Do not waste your money on this bed. Every time the foam in the middle wears out, which is every couple of months you will roll to the middle, its not good for a bad back or your sex life. I paid 3,600 for this bed and had to move it to my geust room. Bad Buy.
Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 5000 by kyliedog ,Jun 05 '09
Pros: Good concept with the dual comfort areas. Cons: BLACK MOLD Middle lump No pump, no bed too expensive DON'T BUY ONE
My wife talked me into this bed system and frankly it made no difference in my back or knee pain and no difference at all in my sleep. We rarely use the pump and when it failed to work the first time, I tiik the bed apart only to find BLACK MOLD everywhere. I called the company who said they would replace the affected parts only and not the pump. They knew about the MOLD problem but failed to inform us that this was COMMON. I think that that in and of itself is downright dishonest and immoral. I proceeded to read them the riot act and said that they would replace the entire bed and the pump. They finally agreed but we were without a bed for about two weeks. I wish I could return the bed for a full refund. I would never ever by another glorified air mattress again!!!
Now on my third pump. Each time you get a refurbished one as a replacement. "prorated cost" plus shipping. So you are getting back someone else's original problem and if you have another issue you get to hassle with it and pay again!
Pros: Adjustable firmness for each side, light weight, easily moved Cons: Generally bad, expensive, no comfort
I cannot say enough how much I recommend NOT purchasing this bed!! I have for quite some time had very occasional lower back pain, but since we have had this bed (about 2 years), I have never slept so terribly. I cannot ever get a good night sleep. I toss and turn and fight to get in a comfortable position. I wake up barely able to move. My entire body aches and I have constant, unbeliveable back pain. I started with the recommended number that they gave me at the store but then tried higher and lower. Nothing helps. I seriously just cannot say enough how much I hate this bed!
the worst sleep I've ever gotten by nvrwrng ,Dec 26 '08
Pros: None. would have gotten a better night sleep on the chair next to the bed. Cons: Everything I would feel bad giving it to a homeless person.
I recently stayed at a hotel that had the sleep number mattresses in their rooms. After hearing a lot of hype about these mattresses I was interested in seeing how they worked. We were completely unable to get it to a comfortable firmness. The mattress was either hard as concrete or it just felt like a cheap air mattress. I woke up in the morning after the first night with an incredibly sore back. We adjusted it for the next night and my back was even worse the next morning. I am normally not sore at all when I wake up in the morning but this mattress was terrible! I would not recommend this mattress to anyone. Seriously, I actually came home and googled these mattresses just to find a place where I could warn people about them. It was absolutely the most uncomfortable sleep I've ever had. It was really dissapointing because I left the hotel longing for my own bed after sleeping horribly during what was supposed to be a vacation. DO NOT BUY THIS MATTRESS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!
Pros: None Cons: This mattress is poorly made. Air pump is loud. Leaks slowly over time.
I tried this mattress 3 times mind you... from the lowest priced to their most expensive... all 3 were constructed the same and cheap!
Better off spending the money on a spring mattress, yes people a "spring mattress"... they have come a long way in the last 10 years or so. Me and the wife drove over to Sleepy's and purchased a Serta! I sleep on my back and quess what!! I wake up that why in the morning... go figure! And get this Sleepy's use to carry this junk in which they could no longer look stupid so they told them to hit the road.... The End.
