Pros: Easy to use if your familiar with sewing machines.
Cons: Instructions not very easy to understand

Summary: While at Wal-Mart the other day, my husband and I decided to purchase a sewing machine. I have wanted one for a long time but hadn't owned a sewing machine in years. I had to choose between the "Singer" brand and the "Brother" brand name. I chose the ... read more

    Pros: Easy to learn on
    Cons: needs frequent rethreading

Summary: I took a sewing class (being a complete novice) in the fall. I learned there on a Husqvarna machine, which is the elite of the sewing machines, in my opinion. For Christmas I got a Singer 2517, which is a much more affordable model. The ... read more

  • What a piece of junk

    Pros: Can't think of any.
Cons: Poor manual, poor tension, poor bobbin stopper.

Summary: No thanks to the manual, I was able to figure out how to use this piece of junk. Major problems with tension and bobbin, but what really has me irked are: 1. The bobbin stopper fell apart -- and the machine has only been used a dozen times. While ... read more

Cons: I was bummed it didn't come with a zipper foot or a dust brush.

Summary: I am an experienced seamstress on a tight budget. After leaving a trail of broken hand-me-down sewing machines behind me I decided I should invest in a new machine (my first new machine in 15 years of sewing!). I decided on this machine because my ... read more

  • Go a level higher than this when buying a singer

Pros: passable as your first sewing machine
Cons: tension complexity, manual hard to understand, threading a big problem

Summary: I first bought this machine, eager to master sewing while being apprehensive at the same time. I got it at Target for 85 dollars. After taking classes at Joann, I found sewing enjoyable and discovered it was something I was likely to pursue more ... read more

Pros: Affordable and Relatively easy to understand, Easy to get maintence on it
Cons: Frustrating bobbin system, tension problems, bad instructions

Summary: I recently returned my Singer model 2517 after receiving it for Christmas. Even as a novice sewer - the machine seemed far too elementry, and had too many confusing problems/directions. My grandmother whom has passed on her love of sewing to me loves ... read more
