An in depth look at Sony's upconversion DVD player

by sslabs Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Apr 12 '06
Pros: Low price, HDMI output, upconversion to 720p and 1080i, great picture on film based material.
Cons: Slow load time, minor issues with video based material. AV Sync is worthless.
It’s just a little ironic that as upconversion DVD players begin to finally do the job well, they are just weeks away from being supplanted. DVD players that upconvert a standard DVD signal to various HDTV resolutions are still rather young. It's ...

Impressive but not quite "HD".

by luclin999 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, May 08 '06
Pros: Beautiful image when watching movies on an HD set.
Cons: Less impressive for viewing video based DVDs
One of the major drawbacks to owning a High Definition Television at this time is content, or more specifically a lack of content. While many programs on the major networks are now being broadcast in HD, virtually everything produced before 2004 was ...

A Poor Man's HD DVD Player

by petergaryr Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Oct 05 '06
Pros: Inexpensive with impressive performance.
Cons: Only does upscaling via HDMI.
What it is Despite my title, The Sony DVP-NS75H is not a high definition DVD player. What it is is a single-disc DVD player that does 720p/1080i upscaling through an HDMI connection that has the potential of producing images that rival ...

Good player for HDTV
by bflusche ,Nov 13 '06
Pros: Good performance for price
Cons: None
We wanted an improved DVD player for our new 56" DLP HDTV that used our existing DVDs. Based on reviews I selected the NS75H and am happy with it.

One quirk is that the the HDTV behaves differently depending on the DVD output I use. I get a different image size using the component video output vs the HDMI output. Since I don't want a stretched image or cut off the edges, this means I get black bars on the top/bottom and/or sides. For example a widescreen movie in component video input takes the full width of the TV and has narrow black bars at the top and bottom. The same scene input via HDMI has a smaller image with wider bars on the top and bottom and bars on the sides.

Great bang for the buck!
by salamander_rex ,Dec 06 '06
Pros: Easy setup, Great Picture and Great price
Cons: Slow on the startup
I must say I am very impressed. I have had my
Sony DVP-NS75H for a few days and could not be more pleased. The DVD setup was a snap. The "quick" setup practically does it for you. The setup to my Mitsu HDTV was a little more tricky. I am going from HDMI to a DVI input on the TV. With a little fiddling though I was able to convert the DVD input to the DVI port and I was up and running. (yes I had to read the manuals) My first movie was "Return of the King" and I was amazed. It came up in 1080i and the picture was outstanding. Worth every penny of the $129.99 I paid for it. Don't get carried away with the HDMI to DVO cable (you don't have to spend an arm and a leg. Like I said great bang for the Buck!

Nice Up-converting DVD player
by movieds ,Dec 07 '06
Pros: Good choice for the money. Great with movie based content. Memory save for 6 dvds.
Cons: Slow loading time. Not as good with original tv based content.
This player was easy to connect using only the HDMI cable (not included). It shows widescreen movies very well, but when watching material that was originally on TV, it is not nearly as nice. I bought this because I bought a SONY tv and this was on sale at the time. Loading time is poor.

Compressed Sound - Poor Quality
by rlunardi ,Jan 23 '07
Pros: Cheap Price
Cons: Compressed Sound, Not great when running NON HD
I bought a Sony DVP-NS75H DVD Player unit to replace an old JVC DVD (circa. 2000) that my wife moved to our bedroom TV. This JVC unit it the runt of my home theatre.setup.

In putting it through my Yamaha Receiver that connects to my Anthem PVA 5 amplifier, I found that the sound seemed compressed and did NOT perform as good as the my old “piece of #*@” JVC. I was told that the quality of new DVD aren’t build as well as previous ones, since manufactures are competing on price point these days.

The bottom line, I was NOT impressed with the sound. The highs were good, but the overall warmth was NOT there. I was running both units through their digital coaxial ports

This unit is excellent for peope who spend over $3000 on an HD set, and less than $1500 on audio. The probably can't hear any difference.

I’m returning DVP-NS75H DVD for a refund and, from what I’m told, am faced with spending at least $400 to get sound quality comparable to my old JVC .

Maybe a Harmon Kardon or Denon?

Frame by Frame Wonder
by prochoice ,Jan 12 '07
Pros: Frame by Frame Forward and Backward - Fast (and Slow) Forward with Sound
Cons: Slow Instant Playback -
Watch anything faster or slower:

The pacing of the movie is not fast enough for you? With this model you can watch anything faster with the sound on! 4 speed settings: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4.

You can also stretch the agony by slowing anything down (with the sound on) at the following speed: 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, and 0.6

Wondering how the editor made this cut? Watch anything frame by frame forward and backward.

The drawback:
The 15 second 'Instant Replay' (and 'Skip Forward') is not as quick as the model I'm replacing.

Also:
Before buying this model I did read the reviews and came upon one which stated that the HDMI connection light was too strong (which is true). So, when I bought it, I took care of the problem immediately by applying over it a small piece of the tape that came with the remote control packaging.

Great Deal for a Great Picture
by watsoncb ,Apr 25 '06
Pros: Auto sensed the HDMI cable and generated progressive scan hig def signal to my HDTV.
Cons: No HDMI cable and long DVD read time
I just got the SONY DVP-NS75H from BestBuy. I had looked at more expensive models but found that this seemed to a mid-priced solution for playing my DVDs on my new 37" Panasonic HDTV. Once I had plugged in the power and HDMI cable and put in a Lord of the Rings DVD, the player began to read the DVD. It took about 2 minutes for the player to read the DVD and present a play menu. The picture was a high def (sharp and clear) with dynamic sound.

$130 for great upconversion performance
by bearvp ,Jul 18 '06
Pros: Price, Upconversion quality, HDMI output, Styling
Cons: Non-HDMI use
I bought this player due to its HDMI upconverting feature and have been satisfied with it. It does have some long load times, but who cares about a few extra seconds? I have this player going through an HDMI input on an Onkyo receiver and then to the HDMI input on my hdtv. There is no quality lost with the extra route.

The player is very sleek, only about 1.5" tall. If you buy this just for the HDMI feed and upconversion to a decent HDTV then you will be quite happy...if you buy this and not want to use it for the upconversion then you should get a different player.

Oh and it doesn't decode any of the high quality sound versions like DTS, THX...but if you feed it through a receiver then it will.
