  • Is Sony's New E-Book Reader a Breakthrough? Or Is It Tomorrow's White Elephant???

    Aug 13, 2007 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Display technology is kinda "gee whiz"...
Cons: Use it and everybody will *KNOW* you're a dork...

Summary: When I was growing up, my daddy always used to tell me, "If at first you don't succeed, maybe it's because you're meant to fail." Sony could stand to learn that lesson. They've gone down the e-book path before. And they've failed before. Now they're ... read more

  • The Death of the Paperback? Not so much...

    Jan 7, 2008 by

Pros: Sleek Design, Impressive Battery Life, Huge File Compatibility
Cons: Awkward button placement, no price advantage

Summary: I... am a geek. Instead of wanting fancy game consoles or expensive clothing, I begged my parents for the Reader when it first came out in 2006. Upon receiving it, I promptly declared my undying love for the device before stashing it away in my drawer. ... read more

  • Great Hardware, but don't buy it for PDFs

    Oct 3, 2007 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Excellent display. Long Battery life.
Cons: PDF support is severely crippled, and Sony apparently isn't going to fix it.

Summary: I ran across a review of the Sony PRS-500 a couple of months ago. Since I travel a lot for business it seemed like a wonderful "toy" for all the reading I do, both fiction and business materials. I was in Costa Mesa, California for business when I read ... read more

  • Lighten your load

    Aug 20, 2007 by

Pros: Adjusts font size. Plays mp3 files. Displays images.
Cons: Page buttons on wrong side. Expensive.

Summary: Okay, first off, although the Sony PRS-500 Reader can play music just like any other MP3 Player, it would be a mistake to call this an MP3 player (the use of this name on epinions made it very hard to locate here). The Sony PRS-500 is an ebook reader ... read more

  • From a Mac/OS X user's point of view...

    Jun 10, 2007 by

Pros: Solid construction, excellent display even outside, impressive battery life, supports multiple eBook formats.
Cons: Expensive (unless you work a deal), Sony's desktop software and DRM, slow screen refreshes.

Summary: I've been looking at the Sony Reader since it's release, and though the device's build quality was excellent (no plastic here, solid metal case construction, as if someone actually designed this thing to last forever, imagine that!) and the e-ink display ... read more

  • Good, but could be better

    Apr 28, 2007 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Battery life, quality of display
Cons: Poor software design, layout design

Summary: This is a good unit, that I feel is worth its price. While the screen does NOT look like print-on-page as they bill it, it is much closer to print than it is to a regular lcd screen. Range of view is excellent - similar to regular paper. The screen ... read more

  • Great device for what it is

    Apr 27, 2007 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Amazing screen, very easy on the eyes, lighter than most paperback books, endless battery life
Cons: Some refresh lag and ghosting. Pdf formats have resolution and scaling problems.

Summary: I recently purchased the Reader after being initially put off by the mixed reviews and cost. A recent promotion allowed a $50 credit for the Connect ebooks, so I took the plunge. This is a great device as long as you understand that it is designed ... read more

  • Sony Reader and It's Connect Reader Software

    Feb 19, 2007 by

Pros: Electronic paper, selectable font sizes, MP3 player, large memory cards - simply the best reader.
Cons: Needs larger fonts and MP3 playlists. The e-bookstore doesn't work on many Windows XP systems.

Summary: Over the years I have tried to find an e-book reader that lived up to the Dynabook vision of one device which could provide ubiquitous access to all of my books where ever I happened to be - the ultimate paperback. I have tried to like e-book reading on ... read more

  • Ipod for books?

    Dec 31, 2006 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Screen, battery life, size, durable metal, superior quality
Cons: Expensive,PDF Files a bit slow, limited file types, DRM, no color

Summary: I love reading books of all types. In fact, I tend to read 2-3 books at any given time. I'll read sales related books, spiritual books, and a good fiction book going between a few books at a time by mood. Years ago when I got my first Palm Pilot, ... read more

  • Best gadget purchase ever

    Nov 21, 2006 by

Pros: Compact, excellent reading area, excellent battery life, wonderful integration with the web.
Cons: It is easy to lose your place in a book by accidentally pressing a key.

Summary: UPDATE: After owning and using the Sony PRS-500 eBook Reader for 3 months, I like it more than when I wrote the original review below. It is still my constant companion. Whenever I have to visit the doctor or dentist, it provides reading from my own ... read more

  • Poor service

Pros: The Sony PRS 500 is a great portable reader.
Cons: Seems to be very little concern for my problem by SONY.

Summary: Love to read, and I actually love the Sony PRS 500. However, an update inadvertently taken now prevents me from accessing the site to purchase books, and Sony's only solution is to re-load, lose my library, then have to reload each book. I find this ... read more

  • Don't buy this piece of JUNK

    Jan 4, 2008 by

Pros: Good idea if you like to read while traveling
Cons: The screen changes are very awkward and slow; breaks VERY easily

Summary: I had a Sony Reader for exactly one week before a huge white strip appeared down the center of it, making it impossible to read anything. I promptly sent it back (assuming the warranty would cover it) only to have Sony tell me that it was "physical ... read more

  • Battery problems? Depends on your expectations.

Pros: Great contrast, lots of books to download, good display size, lightweight, thin enough.
Cons: Could use more of bottom of display for text, tricky firmware upgrading.

Summary: Three service center returns later it looks like the battery life is (with current firmware version): 4 weeks. I've discussed this with two different service engineers at Sony RRC and it looks like the CPU continues to run some idle process even when ... read more

Pros: Great battery life, nice size, best display in the world in bright ambient light.
Cons: Don't buy if PDF is your document of choice. Display is a little dark indoors.

Summary: If you read only ebooks, go for it. The electronic paper is the only technology that actually looks best in the bright, sunny outdoors. Reading poolside or on the beach might be better than a real paperback. Inside it's a little dark, but fine with a ... read more

    Pros: Screen, power consumption.
    Cons: None so far.

Summary: I got mine last week, and spent the last two days using it ( in the house due to a blizzard), I love it. Even after two days use, the power bar has not moved off full, and the screen is great. Randy B. ... read more

Pros: Tiny, very low power consumption, gorgeous screen with e-ink
    Cons: None at all

Summary: The Sony reader is one of those rare and beautiful things. The ability to carry hundreds of books with you anywhere in the world in such a tiny device is great ! The screen is gorgeous. Easy to read even in broad daylight. Uses very little energy ... read more

Pros: Portability, ease of use of Connect store, ease of transferring web content, legibility of screen
    Cons: Limited Connect content

Summary: I've been using it for two weeks now. I love it! It's like reading on paper. I really like being able to "Cut and paste" articles from the web for later reading. The Connect store "just works". I am very happy with the Connect store. It is still a bit ... read more
