Superb camcorder, but buyer beware! by jbhyde1 ,May 16 '08
Pros: Excellent quality, easy to use, great still shots (doubles as digital camera) Cons: Expensive, requires $600 - $1000 in additional software to operate on most home computers
We just purchased this camcorder after doing extensive research. We wanted both an HD hard disk camcorder and a high quality still shot camera - this definitely fits the bill. However, upon attempting to use the camcorder with our new computer, we found we could not work with the videos in HD. After several hours of online and phone tech support, Sony told us we must have software that does not come with the camcorder. We must also purchase a Blu-Ray disc burner (starting at $500) to burn footage to DVDs. The software that will enable us to work with the HD footage (AVCHD files) costs anywhere from $100 to $600 or more. Nowhere on the camcorder or in the store was there a notice that this camcorder would require an additional $600 - $1000 to operate on most home computers. We love the quality of the Sony HDR-SR11, but we are irate with Sony and the store for what we feel was intentionally omitting this information in order to make the sale. You will love this camcorder, but only if you are willing to spend a substantial amount extra for software!
