Pros: Incredible control, easy to use, programmable to the max Cons: Big, heavy
A Little History A while back I purchased a Sony STR-DA555 which I still own and am still immensly happy with it. One of the key features that made me choose the receiver was the remote. It was a touchscreen unit that had amazing versatility ...
Pros: Controls virtually everything. Highly programmable. Multi-command macros. Cons: Large, heavy. Touchscreen hard to see without backlight, and too sensitive. Manual tough to follow.
As with most people reviewing the Sony RM-AV3000, I was looking for the one perfect remote that would let me put away the eight other remotes that were stacked on my coffee table. While there are many multi-function/programmable remotes out there, this...
Pros: Decreases remote clutter, nice ergonomics, backlit display, large infrared panel, controls up to 18 components Cons: batteries not included, manual at times confusing to follow, fingerprint marks on screen, expensive
When my friend came over to visit and saw what it took to watch something on TV, she got overwhelmed and then laughed. I don't blame her considering that I have to juggle with 5-6 remote controls. It's time to end the madness.
Pros: Macros (command sequences) are awesome, remote learning is superb Cons: Cost, Heavy - one-handed operation is tricky
The Sony RM AV3000 has been a life-saver for us. We recently upgraded our AV amp and with all the additional features, we needed a higher-power remote. Since this is currently a heavily reviewed item, I'll skip the specs and typical stuff and give ...
Pros: Impresses your friends, one-touch multi-step programmable "macros" Cons: Too big for one hand. Fingerprinty screen.
This report will be about pragmatics. You can read the in-depth specifications -- dimensions, features, voltage, warranty information, etc., etc., in one or all of these other thoroughly detailed Epinion reviews. (all of which are masterfully done, by...
Pros: New ergonomic design, ability to label buttons, outstanding range, clock added to display Cons: Screen hard to read without light on, expensive
I previously owned the RM-AV2100 and have to say that I was disappointed with it. So when I saw that Sony had released the RM-AV3000, I was hoping for many improvements. I have to say, my expectations were met as this remote has been drastically improved...
Pros: Sturdy, will impress your friends. May cut back on remote clutter. Cons: Display useless w/o backlight on, not compatible with some component functions.
I received the Sony RM-AV3000 as a birthday gift after my in-laws observed me juggling half a dozen remotes. While the Sony looks impressive, it leaves a lot to be desired.
The first disappointment is the LCD display. I find it totally...
I was very happy with my Sony RMV-L900 for a couple of years. I eventually found it lacking in a couple of areas. Namely, I had certain functions on certain components that were rarely used. These functions were either not programmed at all, or I could ...
Pros: Relatively cheap, easy to program. Controls most components. Cons: Haven't found any yet. Seriously I haven't. :)
Here is the 411 folks. I recently purchased this remote and was a little nervous about the purchase considering that all the reviews I read were mixed. There were some concerns about freezing and program issues. Let me just run down my set up before I ...
Pros: It really controls everything!
Macros and delayed macros Cons: Shows dirt on touch screen
Have you spent a lot of time and money setting on your home theatre/video system. Do you have great sound system that no one else in your house can use? Do you often hear I cant turn on the damn T.V. from someone you love?
...
Pros: Works for any equipment that uses a wireless remote. Cons: It is a little big and the manual sucks.
Battery life is not long.
I have bought this remote to remove all the clutter my other remotes bring to my home. So far I have been satisfied. The touch screen is a little sensitive. It should have come with a pda pen but can be bought at a local best buy or office max. It is ...
Pros: Does everything except put the kids to bed. Cons: Tech-support is unbelievably awful!
I'm not going to go, feature by feature, in describing this remote--as you've probably already read about them, but I'll try to add to your "knowledge base," by briefly describing my experiences with this Sony RMAV3000.
Pros: rugged construction Cons: cannot control host of audio/video equipment
I found this Sony branded unit to have some problems controlling its own brand of products ,such as a 36 xbr tv it could not turn pip on or off,It did learn the on and off function finally but should of worked from factory settings .My Panasonic replay...
Pros: Compatible with just everything so far. Cons: Trying to show relatives how to use it when they are babysitting the kids. ;-)
First off, I have to say that a year ago I thought the hubby was crazy for spending $100 on a remote but, like the Roomba, it was worth it. It's a very cool looking remote and does everything Sony says it does. My hubby has lots of gadgets from various ...
Let me start off by saying that originally I was content with my dishs universal remote. It controlled my TV, dish, and VCR. The only thing it wouldnt control was my DVD (KLH) player. But last year, as a birthday present, my wife bought me a...
Pros: Controls up to 18 devices, easily programmable, great bragging rights for husbands! Cons: Very large, heavy, awkward-feeling. Drastically over-priced in well-known electronics retailers.
After agonizing for a month over what to get my dear husband for a second wedding anniversary gift, a close friend told me about this incredible universal remote control. She warned me that it was quite pricey (retails for about $200 at Circuit City and...
Pros: Sleek, easily programmable, universal in every way, compatible with everything Cons: Requires 4 AA batteries, could use glow in the dark buttons
A friend of mine introduced me to this remote a few weeks ago and I was amazed at how practical and easy it was to operate. At first it looks complicated and the first question that comes to mind is compatibility with non-Sony products, but once you ...
Pros: Excellent Hard Buttons
Easy to Set Up
Great Custom Features Cons: Big for One Hand Use
Sucker if Purchased from Best Buy
I've been around Sony's Commander line for a few years. Both of my brothers have the two previous models. When I saw this model come out I had to take a look since it is the biggest improvement the past few years. Sony added more hard buttons to the...
Pros: Does pretty much everything. Hard directional keys. Backlighting can be set to automatic now. Cons: Proudly displays fingerprints on the touchscreen, manual is terrible.
Two years ago I wrote a review here for the RM-AV2100. Since that time the "2100" has performed flawlessly for me, until a week ago when my son spilled a large cup of water on it and didn't inform me immediately, so it soaked for a while. I thought it...
Pros: Does what it claims to do: remote control several devices Cons: Pricey, battery sucker, 2-hand operation, awkward, heavy, hard to use by touch alone.
I'm posting a review basically comparing two Sony all-in-one remotes: the RM-AV3000 and the RM-VL1000. I originally purchased the larger, lcd-touch-screen RM-AV3000 (or equivalent) a few years ago for all the reasons people get an all-in-one: to cut ...
Pros: Looks hi-tech Cons: Poor screen contrast, doesn't work with other Sony components
All my components are Sony except for my digital cable box. My biggest disappointment was over the lack of support for my Sony DAV-C990 receiver/DVD changer. I guess none of the Dream Systems are directly supported. None of the preset codes supported...
Pros: Excellent Spouse rating Cons: Manual must have been translated from a bad Japanese movie
The Sony RM-AV3000 was designed with Home Theater in mind. It does everything, including dim the lights! Don't worry about the poorly written User's Manual. There is an excellent forum online at RemoteCentral.com, that will answer all of your questions....
Pros: Easy to use, It can learn from your other remotes! Can do anything! Cons: Finger prints on screen, need backlight to view screen easily.
I had 6 remotes, now I only have (or need) one! This remote is fantastic!! And easy to use, it can learn from your other remotes, which is great because you can get to your components menu functions. The components that are in my system are as...
Pros: Macros are powerful, but not the best. channel and volume are conventional buttons. Cons: Does not work well with home theaters, even Sony's DAVC 770.
Either the remote doenst work well with their own home theaters, or their customer support is horrible. I have tried the Sony website extensively for information, as well as the manual, but there is no information on getting it to control a hybrid...
Pros: Looks great, easy to program Cons: A little big
I bought it from PCMall for $109. Took it out of the box and was impressed with it's looks albeit a little on the big side. It's slightly larger than a cd case. It looks great on the coffee table and I'm sure it will be conversation piece.
Pros: Very powerful, programmable, with almost infinite possibilities. Cons: Not the original factory remote.
Universal remotes are getting closer and closer to perfect. However, as they get closer, their price seems to keep going up and up. This one from Sony offers numerous programmable features, as well as macros to do what would have taken several different...
I live it. I can operate all my equipment with one remote.
But it is big. If I have to press a button on the left, and then execute, I would have to do it with 2 hands. since one of the buttons is on the far left and the other is on the right.
...
Pros: Programmable heaven.
Cons: Worst manufacturing quality I've seen.
I'll go dead after about a year of use
This remote is an geek dream. Its programming is so powerful that it can make you smile when you get it to do what you want. It can replace every single remote you own. However, the quality is incredibly subpar, mine started to get less and less responsive after about a year of use. Buttons would need more and more force, until they stop working at all. Most the the face buttons went entirely dead. Opening it revealed that the conductive surface inside just vanished. I cant believe how such an expensive gadget is built so poorly.
When you live with for a year... it's crapy. by mferris ,Jul 13 '04
Pros: Combines up to 15 components, compact, long lived battery. Cons: stupid in LEARN mode, dim light even on high, pain to use touch screen.
I have had the RM-AV2100 previously and then bought the RM-AV3000 because I thought it would be an improvement. After having it for more than a year I want my RM-AV2100 back. The 3000, while easy to setup and use, if you stick to the buttons below the screen is a complete pain in the butt when you use the screen. The lighting is too low, you have to remember the first touch turns on the screen and when you use the numbers they don't always transmit so you end up making two or three attempts to get your machine to understand what your asking for.
I also found that at times when I wanted to change setup of a button it would fight with me to "DEL" what was previously programmed, and again fight with me during setup by not taking "LEARN"ed commands. I find it a very frustrating unit to use at times. I have threatened to throw it across the room several times.
My old 2100 was a lot easier to live with and had none of the bad manners the 3000 has.
I'm almost threw with this remote. It keeps dropping my codes by newby858 ,Feb 18 '05
Pros: Works my entire home theatre after being programmed. Love the macros you can setup. Cons: It's kinda big. Locks up and drops programming.
I bought this remote two years ago and I can't tell you how many times it has locked up and dropped all my programming. I was ready to move on to another remote when I read something like on remotecentral that said if it locks up, you should remove the batteries for 10sec or more then try again. It was supposedly in the manual. So this may have been my fault and i'm willing to try one last time to program and use this remote. When it's working, I like it a lot. But if this happens again, I'm going to find another home theatre remote.
Pros: Looks good, can program any other remotes, great lighted screen. Cons: Buttons fail, uses ALOT of batteries & too expensive ($199) as well.
Things started out great with this remote, however, there are two MAJOR drawbacks: the first - and foremost - is that after almost 2 years of service, the buttons no longer work. These are the buttons that received the most use i.e. CHANNEL UP/DOWN and VOLUME UP/DOWN but still at $200, paying what amounts to $ 100 a year for a remote control is ludicrous. The second issue is that this thing chews through 4 batteries like mad....you will be replacing the batteries every 3-4 months...This remote is definitely not worth the money and Sony should be - at a minimum - sending replacement remotes to consumers when the buttons fail....
Pros: None Cons: Just too bulky and very hard to read.
I owned this Remote for about a week before I returned it and purchased an MX-500 which IMHO is twice the remote of the Sony and less expensive to boot.
Pros: Has all the features I need. Cons: It's a bit bulky.
There are some really neat and necessary options in this remote. Some are ...
1) Learning - if there is a function missing from the preset number ie '8002' to control some equipment the learning feature works great. You can take your other remotes and point it at the AV-3000 and it will accept that code and use it. You'll use this.
2) Copying buttons - I didn't like that the cable box selection was on the touch pad. I was able to copy all the functions to the sat box button on the body of the unit.
3) Very strong signal. I don't have to pick it up and point it.
4) Can turn off beep and change touchpad brightness. The beep can get annoying.
5) The macros are great. I programmed on to use the first system button to turn on/off my cable box and tv and set the remote to the appropriate control button. Now I just hit one button. Great for my kids.
Pros: Durable, Versatile, big enough not to get lost :-) Cons: Screen gets finger-printy; depending on your components, it can be time-consuming to set up
I found this remote when I went looking for a replacement for my Sony receiver. The replacement was $95 for the remote I had. I decided for that price I should be able to find something better--and universal--this was the result. I purchased it several months ago for about $100. It was easy to program all of my components into it (Sony receiver, Pioneer CD player, APEX DVD player, Sony VCR, Samsung Television) with no problems. This remote actually works better than the APEX remote for the DVD player (more powerful). What prompted me to write a review today was a leak in my ceiling yesterday that I didn't discover until evening when I got home from work---right over the remote control! All of the low surfaces on the face of the remote were filled in with water. I turned it face down on a towel to drain for a few minutes...and it still works fine with no noticeable damage! I wouldn't dunk it in a bucket of water, but it is obviously designed to take some abuse (a knocked over beer during an exciting sporting event comes to mind)
Pros: Easy to use, great nightlight, controls anything w/a remote Cons: Heavy, bulky, expensive
I purchased this remote to go along with my five other Sony components in my house. At one point I had seven remotes sitting on my coffee table, and this took care of that problem. Though this remote is quite big, and quite expensive, it solves the problem of remote clutter. The touch screen is very easy to use and shows up great in a dark room. The programing is very easy as long as you follow the directions. If you own sony products, the remote should control them right out of the box. Other than sony products, this thing can control basically anything with a remote.
Pros: Looks cool, impresses friends, worked for all my components Cons: Finger prints on screen, should be able to change labels
I have purchased numerous universal remotes, but none of them worked for everything. So, I not only had a stack of original remotes, I now had a stack of univerals. It was crazy! I saw this remote at Best Buy and it seemed to be the answer I was looking for, but it was $200 (May'04). That was a bit steep, so I searched Yahoo and found it delivered to my door for $94 (tax free). I have now seen it for even less. I received it 4 days later and had it up and running in minutes. I simply programed all of the functions using the learning feature and my old remotes. I set up the macros for each function I wanted (ie. If I want to use the VCR, I push one button, radio another, DVD another, etc.). The end result, I took the batteries out of all my original remotes and put them in a box. This one does it all!
