Pros: slim, space saving design, crisp resolution Cons: not able to connect direct to a cable tv, expensive
Not able to convince myself to buy a new monitor while I had one that worked, I waited patiently for my CRT to croak. After 5 years of waiting, it finally died and I was faced with the happy prospect of finding myself a new flat screen monitor.

Pros: Big, clear high quality display, analog input performs perfectly.
Cons: Funny high-pitched whine in power-save mode - if you hear that stuff.
I did significant research before buying this unit. Unfortunately, a mid- to high-end flat panel is hard to find in local stores, so I went by Internet info, reviews, and reputation. This monitor was within my price range, had excellent specs, and...
Pros: Above average analog input, color tracking, interpolation and sharpness Cons: Suffers, like most others LCDs, from side lighting
This Sony LCD has a sleek design with of the slimiest cases available. I have seeing a lot of displays, side to side and the Sony stands out from the rest, regardless of it's higher price ( I had to pay full MRP price on Best Buy with cause I have no...
Pros: This is my update to my defective Sony SDM-S81 warranty repair experience Cons: Sony is full of baloney!
Sony service is misnamed. It should be called "Sony dis-service" as it was a stonewalling beyond compare. I got mis-information that had me paying $85 in shipping fees! If you will accept a refurbished monitor as a "fix", Sony pays everything. If you...
This was a great monitor for more than 2 years...until it started having those funky pixel flashing problems!
You can crank the brightness all the way up and it will look better, but it still isn't right. I actually have a two monitor system and they are BOTH starting to do this, but one is much worse! I expect that, soon enough, they both will go out completely
This setup cost about $1300. Too damn much to throw away after two years. DO NOT BUY THESE MONITORS ON THE USED MARKET!!!!
pixels flake out after months, not years by lancpa ,Aug 14 '04
Pros: Great for the first six months Cons: too expensive to be disposable after a year
Same problems as others My Sony SDM-S81 was fine when I first got it, but now it's having major problems. Every now and then it flips out, creating a haze of flashing green pixels around dark black contours, red pixels around tan contours and blue just shimmers.
Pros: Big Size, nice simple style Cons: Completely Broken!
My Sony SDM-S81 was fine when I first got it, but now it's having major problems. Every now and then it flips out, creating a haze of flashing green pixels around dark black contours, red pixels around tan contours and blue just shimmers. Now it's even worse, flipping all the dark parts to gray lines unless I raise the brightness enough.
I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but i wouldn't recomend this monitor.
And sony won't even look at it to be fixed cause it's been 6 months since i got it.
Pros: It was nice when it worked. Cons: I'm on to my third replacement.
I've had the same problems with this monitor. This first year is was fine and then it started to go. I called SONY and they send me a rebuilt and that one did the same this after a week. I am now on to my third monitor and just today it started to go bad. So it looks like I'll be calling SONY again. I very disappointed I've got a SONY TV that is 30 years old. I guess they just don't build things like they used to.
A near-perfect flat-panel monitor by hackworth61 ,Mar 07 '05
Pros: Slim, lightweight but sturdy, sharp text, bright picture, low pixel latency. Cons: Standard VGA-only input (no DVI)... not that big a deal, though.
I've had my S81 for about 2-1/2 years now, and it's been terrific. No problems whatsoever, and not a single dead pixel.
I honestly don't know what the pixel refresh is because I bought this display before folks were as concerned about such things as they seem to be now--I suppose not many people played 3-D games on LCDs back then--but it seems just fine to me. I've played Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Star Wars Jedi Outcast, and a couple of other similar games using this monitor, and it's been great for games as far as I am concerned.
The display is bright, and text is sharp. As with any LCD, be sure to set Windows XP's text display type to use the ClearType method to smooth edges of screen fonts.
