Pros: universal remote, good picture on DVD Cons: VCR unit terrible, DVD makes noise
I am not one of those electronics gurus that have to have the latest, greatest technology, but I do like to have a few nifty toys around the house. My father, however, is one of the cutting-edge types; when he makes a purchase, he wants to...
Pros: Good picture and sound quality, superb MP3 playback, great value for the price Cons: Remote control is somehow confusing!
When I first saw the first review, I was surprised. I really love this piece and I'm sure the other device has been an open item or defected one. Anyway, let me bring up some important points about this piece if you are considering buying it.

Pros: I am thinking ............ Still thinking Cons: Workmanship, Quality, Longevity, Remote Control, and more
I bought this Sony SLV-D100 DVD/VCR Player to replace the VCR in my master bedroom. The overall usage of the unit is low and I expected it to be fine. To chose this Sony model on the recommendation of the sales person at Circuit City. I thought it was a ...

High Promise, Low quality by nicolo_eh ,Mar 08 '06
Pros: Convenience, appearance, name brand Cons: Quality, reliability, price
The old addage "you get what you pay for" does not apply to SONY's SLV-D100. When you pay upwards of $200 ore more for a DVD player these days, you expect it to last more than just a couple years. The design is poor; there is no heatsinking on the main processor/decoding ic, which runs quite hot. Also the decoding and error correction is suspect. I had repeating issues with the decoding with brand new, clean DVD's which could only be cleared by powering down the unit.
Pros: Hmmm...I'll have to get back to you on this one. Cons: Quality, durability, see above.
Thought Sony was a top of the line choice. I was wrong. DVD player skips and freezes. Remote control quit working and universal remotes will not work with this unit. You can buy a replacement remote for $50. Problem is, the whole unit isn't worth $50.
I have 3 VCR's, a laser player, a CD player, 2 Macs, and over 500 movies. I bought this one today to replace a VCR and in order to play my new collection of DVDs.
The audio and video feedthrough from cable TV works fine. It auto programs and the clock works. The channel selector numbers change but it doesn't actually change channels. Basically, it seems to work electromechanically and it sounds okay, but something is wrong electronically with mode selection and video -- it has no video in the DVD or VRC modes. And just as important, the setup to choose preferences doesn't display. After 3 hours of reading and trying everything I could, I called the 800 number to get help. I got a recording that immediately said, if the setup doesn't work try method A then method B, and if these don't work the unit needs service! I will take it back tomorrow.
I opted for the Sony brand because I have a Sony Wega TV in my office and I wanted this device to work seamlessly with the TV. The purpose for this product was to connect it to my Pinnacle DV-500 Capture card to allow me to perform video editing and output the results to the VCR. I also use it to test DVD's that I author and burn. So far, the product has been great. It works better than my Pioneer DVD player in that it doesn't stutter during fast action clips where the data rate gets into the high 8 and 9 range. Overall, I'm very happy with the product.
Not the best product quality... by michael_dt3012 ,Feb 02 '03
Not the best product quality for Sony. It certainly tarnishes Sony's image. I miss the 6-foot removable power cord that was offered on earlier Sony VCR modes. The shorter power cord barely reaches the floor from my stereo cabinet shelf. I also miss the dark black coloring of other Sony stereo components I own. The DVD player/VCR certainly appears as a misfit in my stereo cabinet. However, despite its drawbacks, overall the product performs its primary video and audio functions extremely well.
I've been waiting for Sony... by sonyfan_dt3000 ,Dec 11 '02
I've been waiting for Sony to put a unit like this on the market! With the other 'electronics manufacturers' already on shelves, it was a long hard wait but WELL WORTH IT! What a GREAT unit to add to my system! Now I have a spare DVD player and a spare VCR that can go to another room in the house. GREAT UNIT!!! Wouldn't trust anyone else to make something this sophisticated, stylish and technology-driven! Dream in SONY!
