Pros: Visually stunning visual effects - inside jokes to those who followed star trek TOS. Cons: Fun movie without the substance of Trek. Trek universe turned upside down and inside out.
This movie was 126 minutes long. That is how long it took to potentially erase 43 years of the Trekverse. While i understand the Star Trek franchise needed some serious resusitation - Paramount Pictures and JJ Abrams achieved the ...
Casting is as near to perfection as can be by VaMarty ,May 07 '09
Pros: Again casting. The actors played homage to the originals and yet were fresh. Cons: I'd have liked to see Rand and Chapel, but it's a small complaint
I'm an old time Trekkie. Having said that I'd like to say that I'm also a fan of the new Star Trek movie. My continuity reflex started twitching right from the beginning of the movie when George Kirk dies. I won't spoil the movie by any further revelations but will say that the twitching progressed into a full fledged clench until something happened that fixed the whole problem. If there is an Oscar for Casting then this movie deserves it. The cast was as close as possible to the originals (and Zachary Quinto could be Nimoy's son) and yet they brought something new to their parts. The effects were first rate and the story was quite good too. In short, I can't think of anything that I didn't like. I suppose that I could start expounding on time paradoxes and stuff but that's a much deeper discussion and should only be tackled after seeing this movie for the third or fourth time. Since this was my first viewing I'll just be satisfied with enjoying it.
Pros: -Great actors. -Good effects. -Stayed with orignal story lines. Cons: -None that I saw.
Once school started up I needed a tv show to watching in the morning while I was getting ready, nothing good was on, and one day I saw the tv show STAR TREK.. I watched it and fell in love. The movies with the origanl cast were not great, but in 2009 when the new Star Trek motion picture arrive, my whole family went to see it. It was GREAT! Great actors, great scripting, great effects. It even stayed with the orignal story line by having serious/funny moment. I reccomend everyone to go see this movie (if it is still in theaters) and if not, wait for it to come out on dvd and buy it! This movie will be worth every cent you spend on it, and will not be a disappointment to you or anyone. It is good to watch with the family.
Pros: Talented young cast Cons: Convoluted and illogical plot, overuse of hand held camera
In 1966 I was a young Army officer undergoing training in the US in preparation for 1967 deployment to Vietnam. For me the first season of Star Trek became a “must see” supplement to my studies of 20th century weapons and tactics, because Kirk’s experiences directly addressed the timeless challenges of military leadership: Formulating and executing a successful plan in the face of danger: applying professional knowledge, the specialized skills of others, and available technology to the accomplishment of the mission – usually in a hostile alien environment!
To me, no subsequent version of Star Trek has had such a high degree of verisimilitude. Over time Star Trek has devolved into “space opera”, and the current manifestation is of that ilk.
There are lots of explosions, lots of shoot outs, and one improbable sword fight – but none of this is an adequate substitute for the drama of the original series.
The plot is convoluted, a time travel/alternative universe theme is poorly structured, hand held cameras are overused, and as a juvenile car thief and adolescent brawler, Kirk is an unlikely candidate for admission to an elite national service academy – now or in the future.
Pros: entertainment worth the price of admission Cons: none
First off...I am not a big sci-fi fan and really quite disliked the old show and the movie or two I watched over all these years. That said, I knid of enjoyed the characters and how they interacted with one another...storylines were mostly ok, but Star Trek was always 'cheesy' to me, something I don't much care for. Fast forward to 2009...not another Star Trek movie...oy. Then I got to thinking, Batman was always the chessiest of the cheesy and its latest updating with Batman Begins and Dark Knight were not so and actually well liked by me. So, I gave it a chance. First off, the characters seem to have been well cast and the character interaction at least as good as the olden days. Then, add some extra humor and tons of action (though not at the expense of a well told story) and, well, I'm currently a 'fan' of sorts. A definite thumbs up from a non-enthusiast. Those of you who are old fans...eh, I would imagine you'd enjoy, but who knows?
