    Pros: Great story, very educational
    Cons: None

  • Intellectually dishonest diatribe couched in a very bad novel

    Oct 9, 2008 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros:

Paperback version is lightweight, and therefore easy to toss into the trash.

Cons: Intellectually dishonest, arrogant, self-congratulatory, demonstrably false, ham-handed political diatribe couched in a ridiculous, juvenile story.

Summary: I just read Michael Crichton's novel State of Fear, because I've enjoyed some of his other work, most recently "Prey." Well, okay, "Prey" wasn't that good, but it passed the time.Little did I suspect, however, that this< i> book was not a ... read more

    Pros: Couldn't put it down
Cons: in order to help express the ideas so characters were made quite ignorant.

Summary: Let me start by saying Micheal Chrichton is an amazing writer. One of my favorite characteristics of his books is the amount of effort that he puts into researching the topics. Sometimes I enjoy some of the facts, theory, and ideas more than the story ... read more

Pros: Extremely well researched. Some interesting ideas.
    Cons: Pedestrian story. Over-long.

Summary: If you are a consumer of popular media it is likely you think the world is in trouble. We are belching carbon dioxide into the air, the temperature is skyrocketing, the polar ice is melting, the water is rising, everything is going to Hell and the ... read more

Pros: Excellent read, impossible to put down after you start
Cons: The ending lost it's form and just became very sequential.

Summary: I think I first discovered the writing of Michael Crichton when I read Sphere in High School. Before that I was reading Patricia Cornwell books, and found that there was a huge difference in their styles, and began quickly to devour everything that I ... read more

  • More like Global BORING

    Feb 8, 2007 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: I don't even know
Cons: Pretty much the fact that it was published on paper.

Summary: Ok you know who Michael Crichton is by now. He created the tv show that I don't watch ER, and by this point so many books but the most famous are the series of Jurassic Park. Yes, the movie, they were from Crichton's book. And if you saw the movies you ... read more

  • 50% manifesto, 100% entertainment.

    Aug 3, 2006 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Gripping, fascinating. Underlying message is meticulously researched and documented.
Cons: Crichton's rigorous documentation of his position will turn off committed believers in global warming.

Summary: State Of Fear is Michael Crichton's thriller about global warming, and the politics that surround it. Although Crichton clearly has some strong views on the subject, and his primary intent seems to have been to air those views, it is to his ... read more

  • This should be Made into a Movie--But Don't Hold Your Breath

    Feb 25, 2006 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
Pros: Another interesting read offering accurate and applicable information debunking agenda-driven claims of global warming.
Cons: Chrichton's technical rationales may distract a portion of today's stylish, science-blind readers.

Summary: "State of Fear" could fit the social control mold of Brave New World tinged with Orwellian information control. Both Orwell's and Huxley's warnings were rooted in the future, whereas State of Fear seeks to expose the underpinnings of today’s ... read more

    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: some great commentary about environmental ideas and fear
Cons: a little too scientific sometimes

Summary: A thriller covering the topic of global warming as no one else can do. We travel with the characters to Iceland, Antarctica, Arizona, Paris, Los Angeles, and the Solomon Islands. We become more knowledgeable about so many things from this book. ... read more

Pros: Excellent writing, Good presentation, good debates on enviromental issues.
Cons: A bit biased on the debates on environment!!

Summary: Introduction I just love fiction that deals with some social topic and tries to give an interpretation on the subject. That is the main reason why I loved Isaac Asimov's books as it would have a social angle built into most of the books. ... read more

  • State of Fear: Weak Adventure Novel or Clumsy Propaganda? It's Both!

    Dec 7, 2005 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: High adventure spans the globe, complete with celebrities!
Cons: Weak plot. Flat characters. Annoying preachiness that's disturbingly biased.

Summary: I just finished reading Michael Crichton’s new best-seller, and I must say I am deeply disappointed in Mr. Crichton. Not so much for writing and publishing a work of unabashed propaganda, but for doing such an obtuse and ham-handed job of it. ... read more

  • Beware those who would profit from fear.

    Dec 2, 2005 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Entertaining read, good debunking of some of the more extreme environmental dogma.
Cons: Overly preachy with primarily straw men characters.

Summary: I was not surprised in the wake of Hurricane Wilma (as well as the overall 2005 hurricane season) to hear certain people say they were moving out of Florida. Nor was I surprised to hear all the religious fundamentalists point their fingers for what ... read more

Pros: Tense and gripping adventure and intrigue---plus interesting science!
    Cons: None---

Pros: It makes you question news stories, processes and authority.
Cons: The action sequences are too contrived

Summary: Here is the scenario that the author alludes to: 1.) Someone reputed to be a scientist makes a pronouncement based on some evidence, possibly just a simulation of real scientific events. 2.) CNN on a slow news day picks it up and reports it. 3.) The ... read more

  • Fearsome and probable reality!

    Jan 17, 2005 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: Well researched scientific probability
Cons: 2 dimensional characters as typical of a Crichton book

Summary: As typical for Michael Crichton, he has written a science fiction book which could be factual as the story is about eco-terror. I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, but it is about the ecologists versus the rest of the world and how they ... read more

Cons: A couple of miniscule inconsistencies.

Summary: The world is a scary place! We have religious zealots declaring war on us and indiscriminately killing perceived enemies of God. We have drugged out addicts robbing and burglarizing to scrape up enough money for their next score. We have people shooting ... read more

Pros: He follows his own formula this time.
Cons: Even if you agree with him, he's still intimidating.

Summary: While Crichton's works have spanned several scientific areas, his latest book spans the globe. The early part of the book focuses on the mysterious evil actions of the secret dangerous club of death, not getting to the main characters for quite a few ... read more

  • Crichton Formula Nurses A Badly Disguised Grudge

    Jan 7, 2005 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Well-documented book debunking global warming. Some interesting ways terrorists (of whatever bent) could change that.
Cons: Crichton's passion for the subject overcomes his story-telling craft.

Summary: Michael Crichton has made a mint scaring his readers. He was formerly quite reliable in finding scientific insights to power his plots of intrigue and danger. The science of cloning brought us "Jurassic Park." Biological research underlay "The Andromeda ... read more

    Jan 3, 2005 by

Cons: Not any worth mentioning, in my opinion.

Summary: Killer bees. Whatever happened to them, they were coming to North America and we were in big trouble. Y2K. Did you buy a ton of non-perishables and bottled water? You don't have to admit it. Global warming. What is the risk here? Are we in ... read more
