Love it so far!

by rigama , Mar 26 '08
Pros: Cheap, efficient, great bread.
Cons: Not enough recipes included, rambling owner's manual.
I posted a negative review on another bread machine last week and went out and purchased the Sunbeam. I have to admit, I was really apprehensive about buying Sunbeam from Wal-Mart but after having awful luck with my previous machine, I decided to give ...

What a bargain!

by nsayer , Jun 26 '07
Pros: Does a great job at an amazingly low price
Cons: Terrible manual
I'd like to just echo the aggregate Internet opinion of this machine: It does a great job and is amazing value for the price, but the manual is terrible. I first tried their recipe for French bread and it came out with a sunken top and a mealy, heavy ...

hard crust, top collapses

by berberlee , May 15 '08
Pros: loaf pops right out!
Cons: top collapses, HARD crust, poor manual
This is my second bread maker (my Regal lasted 10 yrs!) and finally broke. I immediately went out to get a new one, and the price sold me. Initially I bought an Oster, but the cover did not close properly, so I returned it for this model. They are nearly ...

Worked great until it fell apart

by lukrisi , Sep 12 '09
Pros: great price
many options
readily available
Cons: questionable durability
lower-power mixing
This was my second bread maker and I used it about three times a week for over a year and a half.  It worked perfectly, made greta bread (except for the few times that I didn't quite get the recipe right.)Since I haven't used many other ...

Sunbeam 5891 Bread Maker
by valentineb ,Jun 22 '08
Pros: Machine works wonderful. Cleaning is very easy.
Cons: Paddle stays inside the loaf.
I've had the Sunbeam Bread Maker several months now. Each time I tried to make wheat bread it fell in the center and was hard. I used all fresh ingredients. So I stopped trying wheat and tried white. The white is fine, but it has a hard crust and dries out fast. APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS???? PLEASE HELP?? I'd like to have a nice, moist loaf of bread. Have not tried to make any other kind of bread yet.

Returned to store after 2 days. Not impressed
by sotobrick ,Jan 31 '07
Pros: Looks nice on the counter top.
Cons: Stopped working during my second attempt to make a loaf.
This machine looks nice and is a good brand. Sleek, clean look to leave on counter top. I attempted 2 loaves and neither turned out. During the second loaf the machine shut down and would not turn back on. I was disappointed. The LCD is hard to read and the recipe book is very limited. Features several modes and buttons are easy to read.

Good & Easy to Use
by rissy17 ,Aug 09 '09
Pros: Makes good bread and is easy to use.
Cons: Have to scrap dough out of corners, kneading paddle comes off to easy.
Makes good bread and dough.  However, I find I have to watch the corners for any dough build up.  I usually just scrap the corners with a small spatula when it first start kneading just to make sure all the dough will be captured.  Sometimes the kneading paddle bakes into the bottom of the bread.  I find the paddle to be a little loose and comes off too easy.  Other than that is does make good bread and I enjoy using it.  Also the manual for this breadmaker is not very good at all.

tasty bread, but disappointed
by chiko55 ,Oct 16 '05
Pros: tasty bread, inexpensive
Cons: top of bread keeps caving in
I purchased this inexpensive bread machine from Walmart for about $40. It makes a very tasty loaf but I had repeated problems with the top of the bread collapsing. A few bread machine websites stated this problem is most likely due to too much water in the mixture. After repeated attempts with less water I could not get it to work right (it was okay with the 58-minute rapid bake cycle but the loaf comes out small and dense) so I eventually returned it. I was disappointed because I love fresh bread. If I do purchase another machine I may go with a Breadman unit since they seem to have good reviews on both Epinions and Amazon.com.

It looks like the Sunbeam 5891 is similar to a model by Betty Crocker and Oster. I would imagine these other bread machines have a similar problem. Actually, the www.breadinfo.com website reviewed the Oster 5838 and mentioned a common complaint with that model was the top of the bread collapsing. Perhaps I should have tried making a loaf with active dry yeast instead of bread machine yeast before returning it. If anyone has better results with the 5891 please submit a review!

Good deal for the price
by wordwych64 ,Jun 09 '06
Pros: Inexpensive, easy to use & clean, attractive design
Cons: Limited recipes in booklet
This is my 2nd bread machine, and thus far I've been pleased. I make bread at least once a week. This unit is convenient, easy to use, and easy to clean. I am tweaking my recipes to prevent the dreaded collapsed top syndrome, but taste-wise and texture-wise the loaves I have made have been quite good. I always make sure to spray the inside of the kneading paddle and the pin on which it sits with a no-stick cooking spray so that the paddle slides out easily after baking. Otherwise, the paddle gets stuck and is a pain to remove from the pan. (It's important to remove paddles and clean them after each loaf, especially if you use milk or eggs in your recipes.)

What I like best: ease of use & cleaning, shape of loaves, machine's design (doesn't take up a lot of counter space), loaves pop right out of pan.

What I like least: The accompanying booklet could be better with the addition of a few more recipes and bold advice about lubricating the paddle and pin. I literally destroyed my old bread machine's paddle trying to pry it off after it became hopelessly stuck.

No Problems at All
by tramplingrose ,Sep 23 '07
Pros: Easy to use, decent recipes
Cons: None
My husband bought me the 5891 for Christmas almost 2 years ago, and I absolutely love it. I bake at least one loaf a week (there's not much need for more than that with just the two of us).I've used almost all the settings on it (except for the jam and the sweet bread settings), and have had very few issues with any of the loaves I've made. The only real complaint I have with it is that when I've used the delay timer to make a loaf using the wheat setting, the loaf usually comes out a little shorter and denser than I'd like. But for the most part, I use the sandwich recipe that's listed in the manual, and my husband and I love it. I tell him on a weekly basis that this is one of the best Christmas gifts he's ever given me!

sunbean is horrible
by sharjk ,Jul 29 '08
Pros: none
Cons: bread flops on the top - every loaf
I have been baking bread for 35 years--before breadmakers so i know the consistancy the dough is supposed to be --got this model the 1st loaf was ok-- the next 10 flopped--called the co. they sent out another -- same thing-- & yet a 3rd -- all got 1 good loaf -- after reading blogs- it said the problem is probably the heating elements are to heating quick enough-so i have begun to let the last rise in my own breadpan & bake it in my oven
so after a nasty email to them they are offering me a oster & i am reading that oster has the same problems-- we will see

Too dark and crusty
by jennae ,Jan 19 '06
Pros: Easy to use and clean. Loaf shape is good
Cons: Too dark and crusty. No way to adjust baking time.
After making bread from scratch for many years, I decided to try a bread machine. I like the shape of the loaf and the ease of making it. I don't like the fact that I can't adjust the length of baking time. Even on the light setting the crust on the sides and bottom of the loaf turns out way too dark, thick, and crusty if I leave it in the required baking time. If I unplug the machine about 25 minutes early, it is about right for a 1 and a half pound loaf although the top is a little light. Because of this problem I have to be there to take it out early. If I can't figure out a way to solve this, I will probably get a better machine.

Why buy bread?
by epitek ,Jan 02 '08
Pros: Dump in the ingredients, push a few buttons, eat bread.
Cons: Display is very hard to read - needs to be backlit.
A very low-cost and easy-to-use bread maker. Ditch the recipe book that comes with it and go to Allrecipes.com and check out their section for Bread machine recipes. The bread I make is WAY better than the stuff that comes in a wrapper and WAY cheaper. A well-spent $36!

Update - Still love the bread maker, but the "cake" setting is a joke.

Great breadmaker
by edallen ,May 09 '08
Pros: Makes great bread
Cons: Heavy rye flour makes it work hard .But it made nice bread .
For the money , or any money cannot be beat. Have baked 30 lovely loves with almost no salt or sugar . It's best to watch the kneading process as different flours act differently . You can make fine adjustments by adding small amounts of flour or water .The breadmaker had a problem with heavy rye flour. The doughball was very heavy and jambed the machine .However tending the kneading resulted in some very good bread. I would strongly suggest staying near during kneading of unteasted flours. The machine had no problem with white or whole wheat flour for me. You want the dough ball to stick just a little to side so the paddle works it on each turn . Be sure to use quick rise bread yeast with program times . You have a bake option and a dough only option so you can play around with rise times if you like.
