Humanity has a subaltern snowball's chance in hell.

by panguitch panguitch is a Lead on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Jan 30 '03
Pros: Surprising twists. Wonderful future setting with plenty of thematic implications.
Cons: Insufficient clarity of vision. Unimpressive characterization.
David Brin’s Uplift series is now standard fare. Sundiver was a spotty beginning, but two Hugos, two Locuses, a Nebula and a NY Times Bestseller latter, the series has become a mainstay of contemporary science fiction. The slight ...

Sundiver, the Birth of Brin's World

by ladyhawk2_99 , Jan 10 '05
Pros: *Great universe concept
*Super plot, with interesting twists and curves
Cons: *Characters, while believable, could be better developed
Every science fiction writer dreams that one day, he (or she) will create a compelling new world. One that people will want to visit and revisit. Such is the Five Galaxies universe introduced in this, the first, book of the Uplift Saga by David Brin. ...

Not Sure What the Hype is About

by hbomb , Feb 05 '00
Pros: Decent and interesting backdrop for the novel
Cons: Terrible characters, weak plot, even writing is nothing spectacular
I read Sundiver after hearing so much about Brin's Uplift trilogies. This is the first of these trilogies so I went in expecting so very ground breaking good science fiction. I must admit I was sorely disappointed. The basic premise is interesting...

First Brin

by curmudgeon64 , Dec 23 '06
Pros: Well rounded characters, believable consequences of politics and technologies posited, and a good who-done-it
Cons: Much is left unwritten -- or is that a pro, too ?
I've read several novels by the prolific David Brin, beginning with Startide Rising and working my way through to the end of his Uplift Series with a work or two of his outside the series along the way. His books have often had me eager to turn the page ...

The beginning of an Incredible Series

by SixKillz , Dec 17 '99
Pros: Engaging style, Interesting take on alien life
Cons: Not as good as the sequels, Addictive
Several friends had recommended David Brin's Uplift series to me, so I took a risk and bought the first trilogy all at once. I was hooked by the time I had finished the first chapter.
This first book (there are currently six in the series, in two...

First of the Uplift series, but don't bother

by mikal2424 , Dec 12 '00
Pros: Some interesting ideas about the sun
Cons: A weak first in a series may be a turn off
Sundiver is the first book in David Brin's first 'Uplift Trilogy' made up of Startide Rising and Uplift War. However, it is only a very loose trilogy, and you need not read it before the other two. In fact, I wouldn't recommend that you do.
