Norton System Works 2005 - Decent System Protection, If Your Computer Is Fast Enough.

by mongkut Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Nov 21 '06
Pros: Good antivirus protection, decent suite of utilities aimed at less experienced users.
Cons: There are better freeware versions of many components.
Even though NSW 2005 has been out for about two years now, I decided to review it anyway given all the negative reviews previously published here. Although Norton System Works 2005 isn’t perfect I still believe it offers a good combination of ...

Epitome of Bloatware Jumping Shark

by socaljoe , Dec 31 '06
Pros: Strong Support, reliable updates, speedy virus definition availability, cost
Cons: Pop-up Warnings, system conflicts, resource hog, popularity makes it vulnerable to hackers.
Synantec Norton System Works is not one program, but a bundled software package of stand alone products that includes anti virus protection, system clean-up programs, firewall protection, and some other stuff that you'll probably never use (but don't ...

Memory HOG!

by honnybrown , Jun 11 '07
Pros: Your computer is protected.
Cons: Space Customer Service Technical Support
My 30GB hard drive ran out of space a few weeks ago. Naturally, I thought it was music files and pictures. When I moved the music and pics to a large external drive (250GB), it only freed up 2 GB. I went through each folder and subfolder to land ...

Find another solution

by jwgrahamjr , Jul 10 '06
Pros: None I can think of.
Cons: There are numerous flaws - efficiency, stability, cost come to mind as major cons.
NSW may be the "leading" AV/system suite, but it has many flaws. I have been using the Norton products for years, beginning with the DOS version of Norton Utils when I got my first PC - a "286". Starting about 2002, Norton Systemworks has gotten ...

activation is faulty
by hugh59 ,Jul 28 '05
Pros: adequate performance when the product deems itself willing to work
Cons: activation is a needless headache
I have used Norton systemworks for years. This is the last time I get an update.

After several months of use, I had to put a new mainboard in my system. Systemworks insisted that I needed to activate...and would not let me activate. I tried their activation by phone, and spent a half hour on the phone with a young man from India. I read my product key to him (oh so slowly...to make sure it was right); then he read back to me a very long activation key. And...it did not work. A half hour on the phone for nothing.

At this point, I hope Symantec goes bankrupt because of this stupidity.

Norton SystemWorks is the greatest protection I have ever used.
by squeaky4 ,Apr 02 '07
Pros: I have tried others and none compare to Norton SystemWorks.
Cons: NONE
My restoration cd would not work so I used GoBack on my Norton program to reboot my computer and it worked. I tried for two weeks to restart my computer and my restoration cd for my computer would not work and then it hit me to try GoBack that I had installed from my Norton CD. It worked with no problems at all booting my computer and restoring it. Norton cleans my registry, keeps spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, worms and lots more off my computer. I have bought other programs when my Norton SystemWorks expired for the year because other people would tell me that they were so good. I would waste my money because I would end up buying Norton SystemWorks anyway because the other program did not work as good. I just miss my Norton SystemWorks when I don't have it. I feel lost and unsafe without it.

Norton System Works or Norton Antivirus pressures you to buy new version anually
by kay_tee ,Feb 04 '07
Pros: It may give some people some piece of mind for a while until renewal time
Cons: They con you into buying another version at the end of one year or else.
If you do not renew it online, you are warned there is a virus Norton can't protect you from. Then Norton has pop ups to keep hounding you to buy their new version. They have something built in to make your computer act like it has the virus to put the pressure on you to buy it. Don't renew. The good thing is you can to to www.cnet.com or www.zdnet.com under "downloads" and get a free antivirus program. It's totally free. Put "avast" in the search box in the downloads area. I'm never buying Norton or McAfee. It's such a scam.

Avoid this software
by flektonfan ,Oct 08 '06
Pros: Great idea if it worked where the rubber meets the road.
Cons: Ignores the big picture of computer functionality.
Like the other reviews, I had installation problems and have yet to install any Norton product without having to call customer support and end up hacking the system registry on my computer. Once I got System Works up and running though, it seems to be a well designed program (a good idea) that is impractical. My computer (a new Dell laptop with 2 gigs of RAM) suddenly got VERY slow. The boot process takes almost 10 minutes before I am into the Windows desktop, up and running. In addition, my system seems more unstable with more program crashes than before I installed system works. The problems SystemWorks is trying to solve seems to create more problems than it corrects.

Changes Windows program and results in many problems
by quincydubois ,Jul 27 '07
Pros: NOTHING
Cons: TOO MANY TO MENTION IN 15 WORDS
Do not do it! I loaded in and it changed my Windows program as well as Outlook. The changes resulted in many Windows problems. Calling Symantec/Norton ($40 for a session) resulted in two hours of more downloads and changes and finally I convinced the tech to uninstall ... but the Windows problems remain! Must now re-install Windows!

System works 2005 S**ks
by jransdell ,Mar 14 '05
Pros: Pretty Box.
Cons: Software, support, and customer service
I am not a vindictive person, but the many disappointments with software, support, & customer service in dealing with SystemWorks2005 & Norton software Company has prompted me to write my 1st e-pinions review. I hope it helps others in their software purchasing decisions. My frustrations with SW2005 are as follows:

1) Loading of the program caused my Windows XP os to crash.
2)After 2hour 37 minutes of waiting and ineffective phone support, the problem was not resolved.
3) Professional Tech support @ a cost of $150 was required to reboot my system. My keyboard still does not work correctly.
4) No response to a written request for assistance was offered.
5) Rebate submission requires printing of lengthy and personal system information.

Forget it!
by mrsb4 ,Apr 11 '07
Pros: none
Cons: read above
We have had more problems with our computers from Norton products! We have just switched to McAfee and will NEVER go back to Norton. After years of the same thing others have described. Feeling like if we don't upgrade we will be in trouble. We were already in trouble. Our computer was not working well at all! Outlook Express was not responding at all due, we feel, to constant problems caused by the Norton System Works Product.
We had the following message during shutdown all the time, "ccApp.exe is not responding" ...our computer was such a mess...all from out "trusted" Norton product. About a month ago we switched internet providers and we had the option to download "free" McAfee products! So in a matter of hours we removed all Norton products from our computer and in minutes we loaded McAfee products! We will never go back!

I hate Norton Systemworks
by bdeiter36 ,Jul 12 '05
Pros: Never got it running so I don't know
Cons: millions of cons....see my review
Like the other user, I too had all sorts of problems installing Norton Systemworks causing me to write my 1st epinion. This thing is way too hard to install. I tried for three days and could not get it to work. Don't even bother with thier customer service. You can not call them on the phone without a huge bill and thier e-mail customer service is worthless....all they did was direct me to about 10 different web pages. I will never use another Norton product again. I just bought McAfee Antivirus and had it installed and running in 10 minutes....plus it is cheaper. Do not buy Systemworks unless you want a huge headache.
