Pros: Fascinating look at the culture wrapped around Italian football, refreshing perspective. Cons: Author can be incredibly arrogant, ignorant and irritating at times.
Summary: Books about football (soccer, whatever ...) are hardly a rarity. The Miracle of Castel di Sangro, however, stands out for two reasons; firstly, it is written by an American, a nationality not traditionally known for their love of the game - and ... read more

Pros: Intriguing insight into the Italian soccer world. Cons: Intrusive first-person narrative taints the story.
Summary: I enjoyed this book because it offers an insight into how the European club soccer process works, and how different soccer is in Europe than it is here. However, the author's second-guessing the coach does become annoying at times - he chronically ... read more

Pros: Involving, interesting, well-written Cons: The last few pages.
Summary: Castel di Sangro is a small village in the Abbruzo region of Italy (perhaps the only area of the country that the guidebooks don't recommend). Somehow, the village football team has made it all the way into Italy's Serie B competition - the second highest ... read more

Pros: A wonderful account of a year in Italian soccer Cons: Naivete and self-righteousness ruins the ending
Summary: Joe McGinniss is one of those extremely rare creatures - an American soccer fan. By that I don't mean a fan of American soccer; I mean a person raised in America who is as big a fan of soccer (and specifically Italian soccer) as any European or South ... read more
