Pros: Wonderful photography and art direction... Cons: ... disappointing in most areas, overlong, mediocre songs
Outnumbered Oh dear. It looks like its me against the masses once more. (Im already outnumbered by family members who liked it ) But ever onwards and upwards, I shall henceforth give my (probably destined to be) very unpopular ...
Pros: The music, the story, the scenery Cons: It wasn't the stage production
I just came from seeing this beautiful and romantic tale, filled with gorgeous imagery, and my all-time favorite musical score. The film captured much of the emotion and beauty of the stage production, while leaving something to be desired of its ...
Pros: gorgeous music, enthralling story, absolutely mesmerizing Cons: seems to have disappointed most fans of the play
This past spring, my house was filled with singing as my brother Nathan prepared for his role in his high schools production of Fiddler on the Roof. Wed been hearing Fiddler since November, when the choice of show was announced, ...
Pros: Beautifully and lavishly given the film treatment... Cons: ...far too long.
Transporting a musical to the screen is no easy feat- and when it's such a megahit as Andrew Lloyd Webber'sPhantom of the Opera which has been seen by everyone from Swaziland to Siberia in exactly the same production the challenge is multiplied by ...
Pros: Direction, songs, performances. Cons: A little hokey.
Joel Schumacher's The Phantom of the Opera is, quite frankly, one of the best movies of the year. Quite recently I stated that the theatrical trailer for this excellent film was the second best trailer I've ever seen (...
Pros: The enduring score; Emmy Rossum. Cons: Won't convert non-fans of the stage show and probably won't win too many new fans.
Unapologetically faithful to its source material, Joel Schumacher's long-aborning film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-running, box office record-shattering musical version of The Phantom of the Opera is highly unlikely to win over the ...
Pros: Great music, set design, photography and a splendid cast. Cons: I'm still working on this one...
Andrew Lloyd Webber is considered by many as a musical genius, and the Father of the Modern Stage Musical. An equal number of foes regard him as a musical plagiarist who either freely "borrows," or outright "steals" music from others, notably Puccini. ...
Pros: Strong visuals, Emmy Rossum, Minnie Driver Cons: The Phantom and Raul.
Ten or so years ago, a movie based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical "Phantom of the Opera" would have been a huge event. Now it barely registers as a blip on the movie radar. And that's about what this film warrants. Director Joel Schumacher ...
Pros: The music. Cons: Casting, direction, adaptation.
When I first sat down to write a review of the most anticipated movie of my life, I got angry, writing things like this: 'Many of the problems - and there are many - to be found in the Phantom of the Opera can be attributed to YOU. That's right, YOU, ...
Pros: Impressive sets and scenery, great music, adequate acting, pretty true to the musical Cons: Too long, changed some things that worked in the live production
My epinions name is dad-daughters because we often write reviews which include my opinion (dad) and those of my two daughters. This is just my opinion. First off, I have seen the live Phantom of the Opera performance five times--twice with Michael ...
Pros: Magnificent set design
Superior acting
Cons: I didn't want it to end!
I have long been a fan of musicals. I admit on the surface musicals as a species are unusual because very rarely is someone in the middle of a heated debate, running away together, trying not to cry, etc. and suddenly break out in song. It just isn't a ...
Pros: Stunningly sung and realised. Cons: Exaggerated and outdrawn.
The story of the lonely, disfigured phantom hiding in the shadows of a Parisian opera has been filmed many times. Here we have a direct translation of Andrew Lloyd Webbers musical by Joel Schumacher. The supposed opera ghost will stop at nothing to ...
Pros: Finally on screen Cons: Does not match up to the play, no fault to the movie
This would be a great movie if you have not seen the play. My daughter & I saw both. It is tough to compare the most exciting and complete play to a movie, any movie. However, it is good. Well worth seeing. I plan to get the dvd. Having it in your home and being able to turn it way up may be better than the theater?? But NOTHING will ever be able to replace a live play and the original cast. Only if they had filmed the original play and cast, then maybe they would have come close.
Well worth seeing, plan to be somewhat disappointed if you have seen the play. Lastly, more information on the Phantom's childhood just made the character even more sad.
Pros: Minnie Driver, Gerard Butler is handsome, the last scene was a nice touch. Cons: Joel Schumacher directed, Gerard Butler as the Phantom, the script, the acting, the singing.
I have had a few days to think about this movie, so I am updating my review. If you are not familiar with the play, book, or the soundtrack of the Broadway show, you may find the movie OK. If you are looking for a deep, captivating, emotional movie, this just isn't it. I didn't feel much for any of the characters. There are so many poor aspects of this movie; the directing was simple, the acting was dry, the singing by the Phantom was embarrassing. This movie actually gets boring and a little funny when you think of how bad it was. Overall though, I think I could have excused a lot if the Phantom had done a more convincing job and had sung better. Perhaps a lady director would have been a better choice.
