Pros: Great illustrations, wonderful adventure story, better than the movie.
Cons: Really young children may not accept the differences between the book and movie.

Summary: For years I've been meaning to read the original story that the movie The Wizard of Oz was based upon. So, when I spotted The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at my local library on a recent trip, I decided to pick it up. There are ... read more

Pros: It's interesting to see where the movie came from
Cons: Being a children's book, it may not be that appealing to adults

Summary: Warning:  I’m going to give away minor plot details.  Those that have seen the movie shouldn’t be surprised.  I would imagine that most people know the basic story by now.  You’ve been warned. I ... read more

Pros: The complete original novel with all of Denslow's illustrations
Cons: Alot of kids don't know the full story or the Oz series

Summary: Did you know that the beloved 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz was based on a children's book? Well, ok then, smartypants, I bet you didn't know it was the first in a series of 14 books. Have a seat and let me fill you in on the details. ... read more

Pros: classic tale, easy to read for younger children and more hesitant readers, richly imagined
Cons: make sure you get a decent copy, abridged and rewrites abound

Summary: Most of us are familiar with the realm of Oz through our childhood association with the 1939 classic film, The Wizard of Oz. Many no doubt also know that the film was based upon an original novel of the same name. What may not be known, however, is that ... read more

Pros: wonderful story, the illustrations leave nothing to be asked for
Cons: May be too violent for the younger reader. Hard to find the *correct* edition.

Summary: A wondrous story full of adventure, villains that you love to hate, and political commentary to boot. What more could you ask for. The edition that I am going to be writing about is the Dover Edition which was published (has been republished ... read more

Pros: fantastic tales, built-in interest for kids who've seen the movie
    Cons: big words

Summary: L. Frank Baum's Oz series is a real treat as a read-aloud story for a child or even a whole family. I have read them to my daughter a chapter at a time before bed since she was very young. (Now that she is reading well herself, she likes to keep the ... read more

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Mar 20, 2000
    Pros: flowing story, many adventures
    Cons: leaves you wanting more

Summary: L. Frank Baum is sometimes called the writer of America's first fairytales. You will understand why when you read this book. Judging from the reviews the movie is currently more popular than the book, but I think the book will outlast the movie. I will ... read more
