The ultimate backcountry sleeping pad, from the ultimate backcountry sleeping pad brand. Still, most campers can likely find a more cost effective solution that is just as comfortable. If you are a car camper (ie. drive to your campsite) then save your ...
Pros: Unbeatable comfort/size ratio. Cons: You won't wake up if there's a bear outside your tent.
"I slept great. How about you?” is what you will find yourself saying to your fellow campers in the morning after a night on even the most hard and uneven terrain. I recently purchased a Them-a-Rest ProLite 4 (Large) and will admit I was hesitant to ...
Seriously warm and comfortable mat! by blenka ,Nov 03 '06
Pros: Light and comfortable. Excellent insulation for the weight. Cons: None!!!!
This is an Excellent sleeping mat. It Provides a high level of insulation when fully inflated ad is also extremely comfortable. the comfort of a full length mat is also very important to me, and the tapered design means you're not carrying a huge amount of extra weight for the privilege of warm feet!
Go here to see photos of it in use:

The water-resistant stuff sack is exactly the right size and fits a well-rolled prolite snugly. The little 'loop' on the end is a nice little feature helping you remove the mat quickly and easily.
I'll be using it with the thermarest chair as well, for real comfort around the camp!
Thermarest ProLite 4 Women's Sleep Pad by j_bunch ,Nov 21 '06
Pros: light, comfy, warm Cons: price
If you are looking for even more comfort and warmth in your sleeping pad buy the women's version of the this pad. Most stores offer the women's version at the same price as the men's. Sure its pink and a little shorter but has the same weight and width.
The women's ProLite 4 has a higher insulation/R value at 4.1 with extra padding and warmth at the hips and feet. The regular women's ProLite length is 66 inches and the long women's is 72 inches adding 2 oz weight. The men's has a R-value of 3.8, 72 inches length and both men's and womens' pads weigh in at 1 lb 8 oz., with a 20 inch width and a 1.5 inch thickness.
The slits in the foam on the women's ProLite are narrower and smaller to cushion and insulate better. If you sleep on your side or toss and turn in your sleep, you can sleep all night on this pad. I have slept on rocks and freezing ground, and while others tossed and turned, I snoozed.
I purchased this bag to replace an earlier and thinner Therm-a-rest, now I do not go backpacking without this pad.
Great pad - stuff sack inadequate by jeffpnovak ,May 03 '04
Pros: Very lite. Cons: Stuff sack is completely useless and a waste of money.
I actually have a Prolite 3 and I love it - My biggest problem is with the stuff sack. The biggest advantage to having this pad is for it to be light and compact and the stuff sack does not fit the camp pad adequately - it leaves far too much room for the pad to expand therefore taking up too much space in your backpack. I imagine the prolite 4 and corresponding stuff sack would have the same exact problem. My advice is to skip the stuff sack and go with a simple pair of accessory straps or use the therm-a-wrap product for 20 inch campads.
Lightweight comfort that doesn't take up much space in your pack by grrickar ,Aug 11 '04
Pros: Lightweight, non slip surface, compacts easily Cons: Does not insulate as well as other Thermalite pads
I recently purchased the Prolite 3 pad from REI to replace my Thermarest Trail pad. My Thermarest Trail pad has a higher insulation rating, but weighs in at over 2 lbs - and it is a short pad (does not extend to feet). My new Thermarest Prolite 3 is full length, and weights 1.5 lbs. This means I'll be carrying less weight and bulk, but more pad. If you are going to be doing 4 season camping I recommend that you get the Prolite 4, which has a higher insulation rating. Of course the Trail pads have even higher, but are more bulky and are not as useful for long distance backpacking.
