Toshiba HD-XA1 HD DVD Player - outstanding 1st generation HD DVD player

by jwhitakr Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Dec 11 '07
Pros: Excellent HD DVD and DVD playback quality, solid build construction
Cons: Very slow power-on and load times, poor remote control
Introduction A few months ago I purchased a Toshiba HD-XA1 HD DVD player to replace my previous standard DVD player. The reasoning behind my purchase of a new HD DVD player was to enjoy the new video and audio improvements offered by HD DVDs, ...

Pros: Excellent up-converting technology
Cons: Slow boot and not happy with the remote
Up-Convert the World! HD Style... Toshiba HD-XAI My Story Yes, I know HD DVD players and their discs have finally gone the way of the beta max, but why buy a up-converting DVD player when you can get a better model for less? I was able to ...

Worth Twice The Price

by SHOSHOSHO , Oct 18 '06
Pros: Excellent Picture, Software Upgradable, Best Upconverting Player
Cons: Slow Load Time
I purchased this player way back in June so I have had some time to get aquainted. Overall the player is built very well, very solid. The XA1 is the upgrade to the A1. While the electroniucs of both players are identical you basically pay an extra ...

Impressed, very impressed

by emmjay , Aug 12 '06
Pros: Great picture and sound quality. Fairly easy to set up and use.
Cons: Remote too sensitive. Needed to upgrade player out of box
So my room mate spilled a whole Dr Pepper on my DVD remote. I had decided earlier to wait and see how the HD VS Blu-Ray war came out. But since I needed to replace the player anyway, I made the leap to HD-DVD. Mostly because of that affordability but ...

Twice the dvd player for half the cost
by ironskull ,Nov 01 '06
Pros: Beautiful picture and sound.
Cons: Slow load time
Unlike the previous reviewer I have had no problems with HDMI to DVI conversion. The reason may be that I bought mine later. I use optical cable direct to a Denon avr-5800 receiver for digital audio. My TV is a Mitsubishi 82" lcos, which supports a 1080p format. The Toshiba performs with no artifacts on this large screen (ultimate test). I'm sure it'll do fine on yours
Another advantage with buying later was price. I paid $450.00 for new out of the box, however you have to shop the Internet extensively. I found mine on ebay. The remote backlight is pretty but nervous and will occasionally light with no prompting
To elaborate further would be to parrot the previous review.
