  • Great Bike.

    May 1, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Sensational handling, comfortable ride, good offroading, powerful brakes, great gears, lightweight, good price.
Cons: Uncovered gears get your pants and shoelaces caught, brake fade over time.

Summary: This is a wonderful bike for the price of about $400. It manages to do everything well, on and off road. I have had it for just about a year and have put on 3,200 miles. I have had minimal problems and the bike still acts as if it's brand new. Ride ... read more

  • Good value, lower end Trek, but still fun

    Feb 1, 2008 by
    Not yet rated.
    Pros: Price, component set, frame.
    Cons: Fork and pedals.

Summary: I bought my 4500 a couple years ago for around $400, which is on the lower end of the price scale for Trek's mountain bikes in general, and toward the low-to-middle range of their hard-tail bikes. For the money, I think it's a reasonably durable bike if ... read more

Pros: Shocks, breaks, light weight, gears, bigger wheels, FUN!
    Cons: no cons

Summary: My sister got her Trek 4500 for Christmas a few years ago. Three years of riding on this bike and she is still in love with it. After hearing about her fun and exciding bike rides, I decided that getting a bike would be a fun way to get in shape and ... read more

  • Solid unit.

    Jan 7, 2006 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Solid frame. Takes the urban and rural rocking well. Carries a big load nicely.
Cons: A little heavy for road use. Retrofit with your chosen components.

Summary: A little heavy for road use, the frame is rugged and solid for on- and off-road riding. The stock RockShox JudyTT fork is stiff but provides good travel and the shape of the handlebars is such that with a pair of bar ends, it works well for on- and off- ... read more

  • Good entry/mid level bike for almost any terrain

    May 13, 2004 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
Pros: Reasonably priced, relatively lightweight aluminum frame, Shimano components, Rock Shox front fork.
Cons: Needs fenders- stock tires send mud flying at the rider, derailer seems a bit flimsy.

Summary: If you're considering a Trek 4300, definitely move up to the 4500. You may not get the disc brakes. . .but do you really need them? The average rider will get much more use out of the RockShox front fork (the 4300 has a no-name) than the discs. ... read more

  • Trek 4500 Front Suspension Alpha-Aluminum

    May 11, 2003 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Great Reliable Bike, Well Worth Its Price
    Cons: Not a Leather Seat?

Summary: This Trek 4500 is great for either the recreational or intense mountain biker. It will make you want to get out and bike. I have used this bike for almost two years and have had no problems. The lightweight design allows for high speeds. The suspension ... read more

  • Nice ride !

    Aug 1, 2002 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
Pros: Light weight, solid feel all around, TREK quality
Cons: Seat and handles could be a bit softer for extended riding periods

Summary: First of all I have to say I am no expert, just an amateur rider, considering the fact that this bike was one of the cheaper ones at the bike store, I am thinking a lot of pros might think very differently. My experience with mountain or road bikes come ... read more

  • My friend Judy

    Apr 3, 2002 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Nice colors, reasonable price, smooth rides, and already proved durable.
Cons: There are better bikes, but they may not come at such a price.

Summary: The colors (mine is silver and red), are an immediate draw. There is a gold/"starry night" model as well. Some people only care about performance, but I believe there is a certain value to aesthetic appeal as well. This girl sure has it! ... read more

  • A great bike.

    Aug 15, 2001 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
Pros: Excellent bike for the price.
Cons: Front suspension bikes are apt to loose a little maneuverability, but I haven't experienced this.

Summary: I purchased this bike because of the quality I found in Trek. I previously owned a Trek 820 and it endured 10 years of riding, both streets and trails. The trails really took their toll on the bike and I probably didn't treat it like I should have, so ... read more

  • Getting better all the time.

    Jun 20, 2001 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
Pros: Strong Frame, Double wall alloy rims. EZ-fire shifters, Rock Shox Jett Fork (adjustable preload)
Cons: hard seat, Peddles with toe clips would be nice.

Summary: I ride professionally. This is a great road/off-road bike. It has a sturdy frame and double wall rims. I swapped out the seat, tires, and peddles to match my needs. I found the seat a little too stiff. I would recommend toe clip peddles for anyone who ... read more

  • Durable Bike

    Jun 19, 2001 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
    Pros: Lightweight, durable
    Cons: painful seat

Summary: I purchased my Trek a couple of weeks ago and for a person who just started biking its not bad. Lighter than your typical Kmart bike(but more expensive), it can take me from the side streets of Brooklyn, to the mountain passes of upstate New York with ... read more

  • Great Buy For The Starter, Durable & Affordable.

    Jun 12, 2001 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Durable, Meets Most Needs For Biking, Lite Weight
Cons: Hard Seat, Needs Better Peddles

Summary: The Trek 4500 is a durable and affordable bike. It comes with different equipment depending on the year and place your purchase it. The Trek 4500 that Im reviewing was bought locally at a bike shop for 360.00. It came stock with a Bontrager ... read more

  • A lot of bike for the price

    Mar 29, 2001 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Light weight, good balance, low price
Cons: Front shocks could be sturdier

Summary: I've had my Trek 4500 for almost a year and it's an excellent value. I paid about $400 and was drawn to the bike for its features in this price range, i.e., front suspension and stout yet light aluminum frame. Almost all of my riding is up and down ... read more

Pros: It's a good price for an excellent bike!
    Cons: No cons!

Summary: This bike is excellent! I have used it a lot and I am never disappointed. I use to go work everyday and wondered how it would be on real trails: I was so surprise how easy it is to control the bike, even in poor conditions of terrain (snow covered ... read more

  • A solid tough bike made to last!

    Jan 29, 2006 by
    Rated Show
Pros: Very solid bike, larger frame size, RockShox Judy shocks!
Cons: Price? I didn't want to spend that much but I'm glad I did!

Summary: I bought this bike because it came in a 24" frame that I desperately needed. Not to mention this bike is the first step to a much higher caliber bike. That's why you see such a price jump from the 4300 to the 4500. I'm 6'7", 250lbs and it was time to ... read more

  • Definitely Decent

    Rated Show
    Pros: Value, Lightweight
Cons: Derailers can be a little noisy

Summary: This bike fills the category between Wal-mart specials and Million Dollar rip-offs. You get a great bang for your buck on this one, a lightweight frame with decent components. The tires are massive- maybe a little too massive. For onroad riding you ... read more

    Jul 6, 2004 by
    Rated Show
Pros: good for beginners, alright for moderate riders, strong chip resistant paint, solid components
Cons: slightly heavy, but not too heavy.

Summary: I bought this bike as my first mountain bike. It handled great (for a 21 inch bike) and was a good fit for me. It is a bit heavy, but by the time that becomes a problem, it's time for you to upgrade anyway. It takes a beating without complaining, and ... read more
