Pros: Large capacity at RAID 0 Cons: VERY noisy, drives run red hot, unreliable USB/Firewire interface.
When WD released the 1TB My Book external drives, I jumped at the opportunity to purchase one for home and an additional one at work. I wanted an external RAID array to protect my data as I work with extensive video and audio files. I applauded WD for ...

Pros: Easy setup, TONS of storage space, RAID 1 option. Cons: Fan is noisy, drives run VERY hot.
Western Digital offers one of the few consumer RAID external drives at 1TB for a reasonable price. After having a computer crash and losing precious video and music data, it almost becomes a necessity to have some sort of redundant storage. ...

Pros: Easy to use, nice big capacity. Cons: Very noisy, runs hot, too heavy to easy portability.
I had to get a monster drive for work and initially my boss suggested the Maxtor III 1 TB drive but I couldn't find anywhere that had it in stock and we needed it soon. Best Buy had this Western Digital for $500 and that seemed a good price for a ...

Drive began failing after 6 months
by clew_cringle ,Jun 25 '08
Pros: many connection choices, large capacity Cons: Bulky, hot, loud, unstable, stops working
Unreliable operation - due to several points of failure - bad power supply connection (have to jiggle it), and the drive will just stop working (power stays on, but you can't access the drive, and it doesn't show up in My Computer). This is regardless of whether I have it connected to USB or Firewire 800.
Very VERY loud, runs hot. I'm going to take it back to BBuy, and see if I can get a Seagate. I have a seagate external drive that has been rock-solid for five years, and still runs.

Customer Service is the worst!
by lscottharrison ,Apr 18 '07
Pros: None Cons: Western Digital doesn't stand behind their products!!!
Within 3 days of buying this hard drive it died. Western Digital Customer service said they would replace it with a refurbished product.
Only 3 days before, I purchase a brand new product and all I get is a refurbished model to replace my defective one???
Buy Maxtor...please.

Worst Customer Service Experience
by rrst ,May 08 '07
Pros: Good for pilot (The fan noise will make them feel at home) Cons: loud fan noise
pathetic customer service
I bought the drive from Compus. The drive failed within 20 minutes. Also noticed during the first 20 minutes when the drive was working, the sound from the fan was similar to an aeroplane taxing before being airborne.
Since the Compusa store was closing, I could not return the drive back to the store. I called the Customer Service, they told me I will get a Return Merchandise Authorization within 24 hours and they will ship the drive as part of replacement within 3 days. They also told me that even though I purchased the product new, I will still get back refurbished unit and not a new unit. It has been five days and I am still waiting for RMA. The call to Customer service is futile. Their reply was we do not know why it is taking so long and we cannot reach the RMA department or wait another day blah blah blah.
