Once Again, the Basement's Dry - For how Long, I don't know.

by scmrak Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Jun 13 '07
Pros: not terribly loud, pretty efficient, side air discharge
Cons: undersized water reservoir
Out here on the edge of the prairie (amidst the Great Corn Desert), the land is as flat as the proverbial pancake - so flat it makes Kansas look like the Rockies. Combine the flat topography - meaning that rainwater runs off at the leisurely pace of a ...

Top end Whirlpool dehumidifier

by tedspick , Oct 12 '07
Pros: It works very well and the automatic feature is accurate yet also adjustable.
Cons: Fan is loud. But then it's the basement and we don't care.
We had a wet 800 sq foot basement from dripping water falling from overhead air conditioning ducts. The condensation dripped on the floor forming puddles and was slowly destroying our furnace by causing rust to form inside of it. I did not believe our ...

Keeps it dry

by cg502 , Apr 05 '08
Pros: Easy to empty, really reduces moisture
Cons: No audible bucket full signal
Bought this dehumidifier last year to replace one that only lasted one year before the compressor went out. We live in a slab home and have a major humidity problem year round since there is no basement beneath us for air to flow through. We have to ...

works well, almost too well

by kivafriends , Jan 09 '08
Pros: works great, settings are sensitive
Cons: little noisy but not irritating, can fill up fast in the summer
Had to replace the 20 year old dinosaur of a humidifier, so I found this on ebay for about $50. It has a nice design as far as dehumidifiers go, and it runs very well. The best features on it are the light that alerts when the water retainer is ...

Noisy and Not Durable
by thesubro ,Jan 02 '06
Pros: 70 pints
Cons: Noisy Not durable
We used this unit in our basement, and although it looked nice in store, it was annoyingly noisy when we turned it on. It was on constantly for 6 months and then just stopped working. Find something better.

Loud unit, lots of vibration
by rkaled ,Sep 12 '05
Pros: Dehumidifies
Cons: Loud and lots of vibration
This is a loud unit with lots of vibration. My unit also developed a high-pitched whine after a few days of use and it was returned to the store. Although I had read similar reviews before purchasing, I hoped that Whirlpool had fixed the issues. They haven't. I won't be buying a Whirlpool.

The unit dehumidified just fine. I emptied the bucket twice each day, while not even running the unit at night. It did what it was supposed to do. I didn't care for the control panel on this unit either. You can't set a specific humidity level, you can only set "moist --> Dry" with 4 settings of humidity in that range. You also cannot tell how much humidity is in the air, as this unit won't display it as some other units do.

The bucket has a threaded hose connection, but you'll have to drill through the bucket to connect the hose. Then you'll need a hose-end cap if you want to go back to using the bucket again.

I cannot recommend this unit.

Broke Already
by lenahbo ,Jun 26 '06
Pros: None
Cons: Broken caster wheel right out of box.
I didn't even get to turn this thing on. Right out of the box, the caster wheel was broke. With all the other negative comments, I'm returning and getting either Friedrich or LG.

NOISY and SMELLY
by dlm22 ,Sep 04 '05
Pros: Available at stores
Cons: Too noisy and smelly to use
Too noisy to use in the house--might be good for the basement. Even at the other end of the house the noise level is quite bothersome. It also emits a ghastly chemical odor when on that permeates the entire house. I do not recommend this model.

Whirlpool AD70USS1
by artvandelayga ,Oct 07 '07
Pros: Newer models are quieter. Company customer friendly.
Cons: All dehumidifiers are noisy and more so than we want them to be.
Had a problem with my 3 1/2 year old noisy Whirlpool AD40DSL3 and reviewed all the reviews on other brands. They are all noisy.

My Whirlpool gave me 3 1/2 years of good service so I purchased the new model AD70USS1. This newer model is not as noisy as the other older model. I have run it for about a month and I'm very pleased.

And by the way, my older model's problem fell under Whirlpool's 4 year warranty and they shipped me a new replacement - the newer model, and upgraded it to the 50 pint model. Now I have two dehumidifiers.

Whirlpool is a rare customer friendly company.

Does the Job But Noisy
by arliberator ,Jan 15 '06
Pros: Efficient removal of moisture. Control panel. Easy removal of water basin.
Cons: Noise.
This unit works great at removing moisture from our basement but don't expect to watch T.V. or listen to music while it is running. We have to empty the catch basin on a regular basis and we notice the basement is drier. If you need to remove water from a basement where you don't spend a lot of time or have high moisture, I would recommend this unit.

We did notice the compressor stopped working for a short time after we had not run the unit for over a week. This is a concern but not sure if it is a pattern. The unit began running again after a short time (less than 10 minutes.

We broke the water level indicator in the tank once. The replacement parts were easy and quick to find and receive. Great customer service by Whirlpool.

Does the Job
by slimgetman ,Jun 05 '06
Pros: Effective. Decent looking.
Cons: Limited control settings. Wheel already broke. Noisey.
I purchased this unit at Lowe's a few weeks ago. The thing pulls a tremendous amount of moisture out of the air...it is unbelievable.

Don't get the smaller model, if you are in doubt. The 70 pint unit does the trick. It literally pulls about 10 gallons of water per day out of my basement air. It greatly improved the freshness of the basement air. I've got a 1,200 sq. ft. basement with only a mild to moderate problem with moisture, but this unit seems to wring a lot of moisture from the air constantly. It has barely shut off since I purchased it.

It is a bit noisey, but I think they all are. A few minor issues...one of the caster wheels broke about 5 minutes out of the box. Also, this unit doesn't indicate the % of humidity, only "normal", "dry", or "maximum". The "dry" mode seems to run the unit down to between 42% and 45% humidity.
