Love, Lust, and Loss: The Prequel to Jane Eyre

by countess_eva countess_eva is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, , May 20 '09
Pros: Well writte, good characterization, good ending, etc.
Cons: None
Many an author and ardent bibliophile has been intrigued by the brooding gothic tone of Charlotte Bronte’s immortal Jane Eyre, most especially Jean Rhys who dedicated twenty-one years to make the prefect prequel concentrating on the ...

Literary Lisence and the trials of a beke.

by reviewer12 , Mar 09 '02
Pros: Excellent prose and form, lush setting, highly imaginative and realistic at the same time.
Cons: None for me.
I first heard about Jean Rhys when I was preparing to go and live in Dominica, the country of her birth. Someone (I'm sorry that I can no longer remember who) recommended that I read her most acclaimed novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, and I did. The...

Wide Sargasso Sea: Hating Rochester

by pippadaisy Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Mar 09 '07
Pros: the book is leaving my house
Cons: I'll never be able to read Jane Eyre the same way again
I'm a big fan of the Bronte sisters, with their tragic heroes and dark mysteries. This is what led me to picking up Wide Sargasso Sea, a 1966 offering by Jean Rhys that imagines the story that led to Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. ::: ...

Jane Eyre's Rochester, through a glass darkly

by judy_lind , Oct 19 '04
Pros: An interesting deconstruction and reconstruction of a much-loved romantic classic.
Cons: Rips a much-loved romantic hero down one side and up the other.
When I was in the seventh grade I first read "Jane Eyre" and, like many twelve-year-olds who discovered this book, fell madly in love with Mr. Rochester. If I had read "Wide Sargasso Sea" at that time, I would have hated it for deconstructing my ...

Quite the curiosity.

by Niloniak , May 19 '00
Pros: Lush setting, good characters
Cons: discernable effort in connecting to Jane Eyre
Jean Rhys takes up the story of Edmund Rochester, years before the novel Jane Eyre. Unlike Bronte's much loved novel, Rhys falls sadly short of her goals and The Wide Sargasso Sea is little more than a curiosity to fans of Jane Eyre.

Rhys...

Jane Eyre Revisited

by quinnyn , Dec 21 '99
Pros: Defends a classic literary madwoman
Cons: Bashes a classic literary hero
Jean Rhys fills in Charlotte Bronte's blanks as the wicked madwoman who terrorized Thornfield Hall in _Jane Eyre_ speaks. Rhys satisfies the sexuality that Bronte did not dare discuss. It is interesting to hear Bertha Mason's story, to discover what...
