Not Wild About Sophie B. Hawkins' Wilderness

by lambchops, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Apr 20 '04
Pros: A few good, upbeat pop numbers...
Cons: Dated and unfocused...
Sophie B. Hawkins was once best known for the single Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover. Now, however, she is notable because of her legal success against an eBay seller selling promotional copies of her then yet unreleased album Wilderness. It was a ...

Sophie's Fall From Her Path To Greatness

by wlswarts wlswarts is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Music, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, May 31 '04
Pros: Many of the Lyrics, Voice, Poetry, Thematic elements
Cons: Overproduction, Lack of Passion
For some time, I considered that perhaps one of the reasons the new album by Sophie B. Hawkins was not resonating with me was that in her prior three albums, I had discovered a delicious amount of angst that I could revel in simply by listening to her ...

"I said 'water' expecting the word would satisfy my thirst"

by smarterthan3 , Nov 20 '06
Pros: You can't help but respect the lyrics here...
Cons: ...But that same mindset isn't always afforded regarding the clothing that drapes those words
Trying to describe what exactly I dislike about Tooth and Nail's labelle mewithoutYou is about as challenging as finding a suitable description for exactly what kind of music they play. Incorporating the...unique sing/speak vocals of Aaron ...

Why pluck one string when you can strum the guitar? Strum the guitar!

by wildcatblue7 , Jan 24 '05
Pros: Some amazing instrumentation . . . ah.
Cons: Aaron Weiss’s voice takes some serious getting used to.
Ever find a band you really like . . . except for the vocalist? I’m fairly picky about rhythms and tones and such, so this happens to me an awful lot. mewithoutYou, a rather quirky indie-post-hardcore-post-punk outfit, proves a perfect example. ...

by dogeymon , Oct 17 '04
Pros: Emotional, poetic, beautiful, and it rocks!
Cons: Haven't heard the whole thing yet!
Mewithoutyou is so well known among punk and rock fans alike because of their incredible prescence! They're vocalist has been known to be so carried away by the rock and roll that he screams his voice box until he's spitting a combination of sweat and ...

Get lost in her wilderness....
by ryansbhf ,Apr 30 '04
Pros: The great beat and amazing songwriting.
Cons: None. This album is absolutely prefect.
I have been a huge fan of Sophie B. Hawkins since 1992 when she released her first album, Tounges and Tails. I also enjoyed her other two albums, Whaler and Timbre, very much. Her newest album Wilderness, has really blown me away. It surpassed my expectations. The range she demonstrates is nothing short of spectacular. From the energetic song Blue to the jazz like styling of Sweetsexywoman, every moment spent listening to this album will make you appreciate her more and more. This album seems to take the best parts from her three previous albums and combine them. This is an album for true music lovers. She is not some shallow singer releasing it to make a few bucks. In fact she spent her own money to finance it. So whether you're an old fan or have never heard of her, pick up Wilderness. You'll be glad you did.

Yet another success for Sophie B.
by musicloverrr ,May 01 '04
Pros: Sophie shows honesty, sensuality, maturity and an amazing vocal range on this CD.
Cons: The only bad thing was the length. 54:09 is too short
I'll be honest: at first, I was nervous about Wilderness. I was a huge fan of her other 3 albums, especially Timbre. When I had heard that her newest release was more upbeat and commercial sounding, I didn't think I'd like it as much. But I can say after having listened to it the past week, I enjoy it immensely. You can definetely see the lightness of these tracks, "Blue" is an amazingly festive song, the sweetness of "Open Up Your Eyes" and the very jazz like "You Make Me High". The only place darkness shows up is in the song "Angel Of Darkness", while it is a good song, it seems somewhat out of place on such a lighthearted album. "Walking On This Ice" is a song that really stands out. It's already off to a great start on the radio and I think it will keep getting bigger and bigger. Sophie has come a very long way since her 1992 debut and this album should get rid of any doubt people may have about her creativity. This is one beautiful Wilderness you'll want to get lost in.

Mewithoutyou Improves with their sophmore release.
by duece2wild ,Dec 05 '04
Pros: Unique Style; Impressive guitar; Passionate, Powerful Vocals; Very High Quality Lyrical Content.
Cons: None
Mewithoutyou's debut release ([A--->B] Life)is unique and outstanding. Lead singer/speaker Aaron Weiss is so passionate and poetic while delivering his lyrics. The guitar's are hot and heavy and mix beautifully with Weiss's vocals. However, in their sophmore release, mewithoutyou under goes some changes in their style. Weiss continues to deliver his lyrics potently and passionately, but the style is somewhat drummed down. A little less frantic as a whole. However, this change actually brings out a better product even for hardcore fans and those who typically prefer heavy rock. Catch Us For the Foxes has replaced [A--->B] Life as my favorite cd. This group is something really special. If you aren't sure about them, they are Rock/Indie Rock and can be listened to at www.purevolume.com -Jeremy D.
