Itasca Horizon - I rate it an 85%

by jaburns , May 05 '03
Pros: Great Diesel Cat Pusher, nice ride, and very roomy.
Cons: Substandard plumbing design, engine overheats if radiator not cleaned regularly
The CAT diesel is very powerful. The generator from Oman is great, too. Lot's of power. The two slideouts provide an exceptional amount of room. The convection/microwave is very handy. The closet space and underneath storage is the best I've seen. The...

Highly recommended

Pros: Well-designed.  Smooth ride.  Roomy.  Dependable.  Easy to drive.
Cons: Will overheat if radiator is not cleaned when dirt accumulates on it.
Some of Epinions.com's details are wrong.  This is a Class A motor home, not a Class B; and it is diesel, not gasoline, powered.  My late husband and I drove one of these motor homes across country twice and lived in it during those trips ...

PREVENT RADIATOR OVERHEATING
by petef ,Sep 28 '09
Pros: We love our 2000 Itasca Horizon, and have learned how to keep it cool.
Cons: Connect the wire from the converter to the 12vDC panel under fridge to the bus.
It seems the common problem with Diesel Pushers is the radiator overheating if not cleaned. The cause of this is that the engine has a breather tube that simply points down and constantly  gives off crank case fumes - hot oily smoke - when the engine is running. Since the radiators (engine, transmission, dash and cabin air conditioning) are generally  behind the engine, the crank case fumes blow up and cover them with an oily residue in short order. Then the dust and dirt in the air stick to the oil until the radiators plug too much to cool. Simply add a tube to bring the crankase fumes out behind the rear bumber and the problem is solved. Good Luck and Happy RVing!!
