Pros: Like the energizer bunny. It keeps going and going and ...
Cons: The U-joints in the front axle didn't last when the 4x4 was used alot.
The Bottom Line: This is a good vehicle and proved to be reliable for the 11 years that I owned it.

I had my Ford Ranger for 11 years and sold it last month so I feel that I am well qualified to review the 88 ranger. My Ranger had the 2.9L V6 engine with EFI and a 5 speed manual transmission. It was a 4x4 and had the extended cab. I was the second ... read more

Pros: A good buy for the age of the truck. Reliable.
Cons: No air conditioning.

My husband chose to purchase this vehicle because he needed either a pick-up or a van, since he is in the flooring business and often has to carry large amounts of carpet, vinyl, and/or tile. He was a little leary about buying a 1988 model year truck ... read more

Pros: 4x4 fun, easy manuverability
Cons: poor paint (80's problem for all manufacturers)

Who can say anything bad about a Ranger. It is one of the best selling compact trucks ever. I recently bought a 88 STX supercab for $500 (well below book) Although it was beat almost to death by the previous owner, a little tune-up and neglected ... read more

Pros: Design, engine, and handling
Cons: Have to take care of engine

I bought this truck, because it looked nice, ran good, and handled very well. This truck is a very rare truck as what I found out, there were less than 1,000 made each year for two years. It is like a low rider with the ground effects and can be lowered ... read more

Pros: You got to be kidding
Cons: POS

I have a 1988 Ford Ranger. I have owned it since it was new. Unless Ford had improved them since I bought mine, I will never own another one. This truck has lived up to the old quip Found on Road Dead. When the truck turned 90 thousand miles the engine ... read more

Pros: Great service
Cons: Setting wheel hubs for 4x4 driving

Over the last 30 years I've owned several pickups for home use. By far the best service I've received from any pickup is this 1988 Ford Ranger. It has the "King Cab", with 4 wheel drive. In the 10 years, (I bought it ... read more

Pros: longevity, easy to drive, sits up high for visibility, easy to routinely maintain
Cons: throw away transmission and engine made of aluminium

I purchased my Ford Ranger extended cab in 1988. I STILL own it! It has over 190,000 miles on it and is going strong. Its a 4 wheel drive and has been used extensively as both a farm truck and a family vehicle. Finally, after all these miles the ... read more

Pros: Great Engine, Good gas mileage
Cons: Paint peeling, Lots of rust

I bought a 1988 Ford Ranger XLT, 4 x 4 Extended cab brand new in late 1988. I now have almost 300,000 miles on it. It is still running strong. I have never had any major repairs on it, just the usual brakes, tune-ups, etc. I have driven it across ... read more
